Title: Achievements
Post by: Succubus Dryad Of The Undying Comet on March 13, 2009, 03:27:14 PM
Can we expect you guys to add them when there are no more bugs left?
Is it possible for a mod?

Possible? Probably.

Achievements are an artificial way of boosting game-time. We focus first on the quality so it's fun to play, even without achievements. Maybe we can implement them later.

Achievements are also dumb and force people to play not for fun, but for an artificial way to boost their e-penis length

You could always turn them off ::)

And no, it's not dumb. We need a greater playerbase.

I'm not sure I want a bigger playerbase if that means I'm matched with people who aren't actually interested in playing. It's basically gonna be a 2v1 if I'm stuck against someone who's going to refuse to use any gadget other than grenades, or spends the whole time in EMF, or ignores objectives so he can heal his partner instead, or whatever. Doesn't sound good.

I'm afraid that if we implement achievements people will play to get those achievements.

Maybe it's a natural thing, but when I see what I have to do to get Achievement X in L4D/TF2, I'm going to play in such a way, no matter how many times I die. So I don't think it's very good for the seriousness of the game.

There is nothing wrong with Personal Best though.

Lennard and HSB, that's complete crap. You're assuming the achievements will be "Get 10 Grenade kills" and such. You could have stuff which reinforces the stuff you want. "Win 10 Times", "Win 10 Games in a Row, alternating between spy and merc each round" are the kind of things you want.

Sure will be fun seeing people bitching at/refusing to play with their partners because they ruined their winning streak, then.

Well, those will be fun achievements... I can already see the list.

Win 10 Times
Win 10 Times in a Row
Play 10 rounds as a spy
Play 10 rounds as a spy in a row
Play 10 rounds as a merc
Play 10 rounds as a merc in a row
And variations on those (20, 40, 80, 160)

While achievements like these:
Bash a spy 12 times
Kill a spy while he's trying to grab you
Evade 10 mines

... will surely ruin gameplay. I can already see people searching for mines (forgetting about the real aim, objectives) to get a frikkin' achievement. The ones you gave earlier (and my variations) are simply not worth the time of such a system.

Now, you CAN have a Personal BEst system, which doesn't reward you, but just reminds you evaded 10 mines, or that you evaded 2 more mines that your last time. It's fun to read when you die and they won't ruin the game as there is no reward (in form of achievement/medal/whatever) to beating your own score.

You could put in 'hidden' achievements, so that people get them and AFTER they do, they can see how they did it.
But then people would make sites with the list of achievements :/

Most of the people I know who play Xbox Live try to get higher gamerscore than their friends (to a certain extent at least), this applies for a lot of people (not me though :P). However, I fail to see why this is a problem, people can have fun gaining achievements, plus in a game as 'complicated' as SvM, it would provide an extra incentive to learn the ropes.

Win 10 times...get 3 people to play with you who want the same achievement. Continually die as mercs and win...

Who said people that like challenge like to cheat the achievements? Some people may do, others may not. For example, just because there are people who do that in the ranked mode of some games doesn't mean developers don't stop including it.

fuck no, fuck achievements to hell!!

all they do is piss me off in TF2 because i feel like i cant have the stuff of the game (gadgets/weapons) that i want, and i hate fucking having to play more than i do already just to fucking unlock them. they kinda make me want to just go to those fuckin achievement maps, but in the end the only solution to the problem for me is to not play that fucking bullshit game at all.

do u want 4 eyes? not me. i spend enough time on the computer as it is.

why convert good games like these into stupid MMORPG-like (endless) games.

where all the geeks do is push the button command for "dig gold" and know like a 100 shortcuts for other shit hoping that one fucking day in their miserable lives they will be the lil non-existant 3D charcater with the most "gold" lol.

fuck achievements, fuck "gameplay extention"

and yes, what the other doods said also came to my mind right when i read the thread title. they are right when they say that expanding the community with a bunch of fuckin "hard jump/achievement-map" morons dosent make a difference. and in the end we are the ones being affected by not being able to use a gadget because of a dumb achievement (supposing that achivements would unlock stuff).
either way (unlockable stuff or no unlockable stuff through achievements) they are dumb imo.

xD

oh and call me a pessimist but VALVE games are overated!

ok bitching over cya.

Who said anything about unlockables?

Anyway, I'd like to see this kind of stuff:
- Win 10 matches as spy without dying.
- Win 10 matches as merc without losing an objective.
- Kill ALL the spies as merc (perfect score) x times.
- Take ALL the objectives as spy x times.
- Assist your spy mate in taking an objective 20 times.
- Save the objective on the last second 50 times (merc). (You'd have to win the match for this to be counted)
- Heal your mate 1000 times. (max 5 per game or so counted)
- In 5 matches as merc, all your kills are headshots.
- In 5 matches as spy, all your kill are railgrabs.

^ Something like this.
Of course there will be  people that will abuse the game just to get objectives to boost their e-penis, but imo it's way funnier to suddenly have a window pop up and say you just grabbed the "medic" achievement ::)

People will play for them, not for the quality of the game. ACHIEVEMENTS SUCK!

I don't care enough to do that.
Also, if the people play for the achievements, it means that the game sucks.
We don't want the game to suck now, do we ;)
Title: Re: Achievements
Post by: Ion.67 on March 19, 2009, 12:23:25 AM
I definitely won't do that. I pretty much hate achievements if you can't tell. Everybody won't, no doubt. But with such a small fanbase, I have confidence it will ruin a few games.
Title: Re: Achievements
Post by: Roberto1223 on March 20, 2009, 04:00:26 AM
imo achievements make games feel like a fucking drag.   : /

cause i feel like i have to do em, but i dont want to do em, and it ends up in me not playing the game lol.

so thats negative points for the scarse fanbase, cause not only will ps increase in nubs that only play for achievemets, but will drive regular ct players away too lol.

Adding myself to the "I hate achievements" list.

Hey Zed, you should tell the gaming industry to get a clue when it comes to this.

I'd rather take player statistics, thank you.

Or you could just buy a game like WoW and try leveling up if getting 10 of something turns your crank.
