No.  Fridge sent me an xfire message.  He said it will be the beta with 3 full levels, all weapons for mercs, but minus a few gadgets for spy (sticky cam and alarm snare).  Everything else is a full go.  The animations are a little choppy for now, but this is early in development.

This is not a joke in any shape or form at all so don't even think about not believing what I just said for any reason whatsoever.

Chaff should not be a substitute for flash or smoke. The merc should still have reasonable visibility, especially because he is robbed of other visions while in the field.

Awesome job! Looks impressive, I can't wait to see the end result with the particles etc.

Just this, will the merc have his HUD disabled like in SCCT? Or are you planning to disable bits of it?

Cool effect! But i have a question. When the merc looks down it seems like he has a beer belly and there are clipping issues.  Lol.  What is that when the merc looks down?

That was super-alpha view model, where we just stuck a view camera inside the merc model. The clipping is from the lower part of the helmet, I think. The current version is nothing like that.

"...in my opinion."

Personally, I think it's fine.  Besides, get the small stuff down and move onto bigger things.  Chaff effects would be about an 83 on a list of my top 85 priorities.

I also think that the effect is a little too strong, but apart from that I like it :). Besides, it can be changed if necessary when the team is ready.

The 'beer belly' was caused because here the mercenary was still using the default UT3 animations (you can see his arms in the dual weapon position). Because our models are like 3 times taller than the UT3 models, it got "cropped", causing the belly to explode so to speak :P
Title: Re: Tick Tock
Post by: Farley4Fan on June 24, 2009, 06:41:06 PM
oh lol

It seemed like he had a beer belly going, and he had a few beers at the time.  The drunken effect + beer belly threw me a bit off lol

I'm going to call everyone saying its "too strong" a bunch of girls. If anything, the chaff is too weak. "OH NOES...SQUIGGLY LINES ON MAI COMPUTAR!!! I HAEV 2 GET A NEW MONITOAR" Please ladies, grow a pair. If anything it should have a greater impact. I realize the remnants of the chaff aren't present, but I don't see that causing much more of a visual problem.

Isn't the merc also sporting an electrical helmet? Even in his normal vision there are still electrical devices running. If you aren't going to do more lines, then I feel the images should get darker in his plain sight...or something along the lines of showing a shut down to the helmet.

Man I shud grow sum reel ballz cuz teh chaff scarez me. It should definitely not be any stronger than it is at the moment, it's fine but I think it would look better if the effect was a bit lighter.
Title: Re: Tick Tock

I think it looks pretty good. With all the chaff shit floating around it should
do the job.

The squiggly lines aren't that distracting and don't inhibit the mercs view. They are thin and quick, which does nothing.
Title: Re: Tick Tock
Post by: Gawain on June 25, 2009, 06:59:52 PM
so your point is that because it's still possible to see reasonably, it should get stronger? oO
chaff certainly needs no boost, especially not in an application flash and smoke are meant to do.

Don't get me wrong, it looks very well done, but this chaff isn't as harsh as what it was in CT/PT...I thought we were nerfing the range of chaff (no more going through walls), not the way it inhibits the merc's vision.

IMO the view is WAY more obscured than in CT. Besides, you seem to forget we don't change a thing about what chaff actually does, disabling use of visions.
Title: Re: Tick Tock
Post by: Gawain on June 26, 2009, 01:08:21 AM
balance-wise, it shouldn't nerf the merc's normal vision at all, so as long as the effect stays gentle it's more of an art thingy which can't be discussed objectively. besides, don't forget that we didn't see the added particle effect yet. i also doubt that the devs are gonna remove the working-through-walls ability in the first build, and i'm not that sure myself whether it would be a good idea. however, we could add other properties to chaff like also affecting the merc's flashlight, blocking emf vision etc.

Well, the same goes for not being able to reload. Realistic or not, if one effect is chaff that it disables the merc's abilities, I'm okay with it.

not getting out of sniper mode is just GAY.
i'm also not so sure if prohibiting reloading is a good idea in the first place. i'd rather see some effect on the flashlight like flickering and disabling the spotting laser target identification.

I would say not being able to reload because of a chaff is a bit stupid too, why should something that is essentially an EMP grenade stop you from replacing ammo in your gun?

Unless the mercenary is actually a robot and totally freaks out when chaffed. Reloading isn't something which requires "electricity", so chaff shouldn't affect it.

Chaff affecting reloading was a pretty big part of balance. Especially in Factory main balcony, when one spy had to hold off one or more mercs in order to shave off valuable seconds.

I've won/lost several games due to this feature of chaff, and I think it's very important to the game.

mic, i'm not talking about taking away the anti-snipe ability, but taking away the anti-reload and anti-going-out-of-snipe abilities which are plain stupid. don't tell me those are important when good players are firing single shots or small bursts only.

mercs are robots, ARGUS is the name of the factory were they make the RoboMercs

The version of RoboMerc used in SCCT was RoboMerc 3000 V1.3

the good news is that in Project Stealth, ARGUS has upgraded the RoboMerc tecnology. The RoboMerc used in PS is RoboMerc 4000

this new robo merc has new features. some of them are the following:

*no more freaking out when chaffed (they can reload now when chaffed)
*they can now shoot frags when using the gas mask
*they can now break spy animations with melee attacks.

so all those lil baby girls crying for balance issues, go suck some LARGE ERECT [roosters].

good players are firing single shots or small bursts only.

As far as I know there is barely any spray in Chaos Theory, if you've played Counter Strike THAT'S a game that needs gun control, in CT spray and pray is the way to go. You could also snipe too :P.

We haven't seen the cam-smoke effect yet, and what about the effects on the spy side?
When you're getting up after a charge there is something iirc.

And I've been meaning to ask someone.  What does IIRC stand for?

well, one could expect stronger flash effect. It won't give much advantage if it works like this.

A timer was quickly fading from 100% visible to 0%.

The actual implementation takes way longer.

Thanks lennard.

And I take it this effect isn't completely finished yet?  It only flashed the original flash image with 3 spies, even when they weren't in view. But I see that this is explained by the "updated real-time after-image not yet included".

When can we expect to see the "real-time after-image" implemented into the flash effect?  That would be cool.

I would like to scoot back to the argument about chaff once more... victors in clubhouse were often decided by the simple fact that chaff also impairs mercs' ability to push elevator buttons, so I'd say chaff stays pretty much exactly the way it was.

And on a side note, I remember that there was some indecisiveness on whether or not chaff should work its magic through walls, I'd say it should because that also was an important capability of the chaff grenade which could determine the result of the game.

This is a bit unrelated to the tick tock, but with all the nerfs being made to chaff nades I thought it would be cool to give them an environmental boost.  Like Doucher just said, chaff basically shut down elevators on club.  What if chaff shut down other things, like an electric door?  That way he could keep it open (for easy access like on aqua) or keep it shut to keep mercs out.  I'm thinking that chaff could effect things in the environment other than cams/lasers.  This would be up to the mapper, but it would be cool to see if done right.

Yea, I already implemented a real-time scene capture when flashed.

Hear who's saying. Instead of playing the wiseguy and posting such useless crap on our forum, please post something intelligent yourself (correct English, right punctuation, content that DOES make sense, etcetera).

I've never thought Papa Skull was spam happy, it's something you've felt, just shut up.

I like the flash effect, seems like just the right amount of time. Hell if you ever played BF SF the
flash lasts about a minute before you can even see outlines. It's crazy and certain death.

I think the flashed effect doesn't works properly. Now there is always a print of the mercs on the screen instead of the last saw enviroment.
