It's been established since the beginning of PS that our first map was going to be a Remake of Clubhouse so we would be able to slowly slide into the waters of MOD making, rather then Jumping right in with eyes closed.
Besides other then the Main Entrence and the very basics of the Layout, it's going to be a completely different map.

II couldn't really all of it because of the shading but I have two questions Zed, first, in the port room with the boat is there a staircase at the end of the upper walkway? Second, there is a closed door downstairs and another in the 3rd room you enter, do they open or are they just parts of the decor?

Yes there are stairs, and about 90% of the closed doors are only placeholder visual blockers so you couldn't see into unfinished parts of the map.

The DEV team never mentioned it and I never thought about it. Seriously, it's not that big of a deal and wasn't something we would have fixed for a few second animation done specifically for the teaser.
In the End, it has more to do with texture popping then anything. I didn't give it enough time to let everything stream in before I started recording the video.

1 more thing! I noticed that above the spy there were a few directional signs telling where certain parts of the map were. Awesome. Very noob friendly but not annoying for vets. Also, in those directions, there was a sign pointing toward a theater/stage. I'm guessing there will be some sort of stage then. ;D Can't wait to see that!

The reason why the Spy and Merc look different, is because the glow of the Merc's visor isn't implemented in UT3 yet. There are some artifacts, but generally that's just small stuff. The Spy looks better in-game IMO. Probably has to do with the lighting, but Zed is the expert on that.

It's not the visor btw, it's just the overall look, textures look bad - looks like an old game. But the map looks beautiful and the animation was superb, so was the music. I know it's pre-alpha so I can expect to see a better looking spy/merc in the final version obviously.

The initial animation was longer, and it shows the Spy grabbing onto the Mercs vest and using it as leverage to break the neck. It never occured to me that it might look like the spy is hugging the merc without seeing the whole thing.. and it still doesn't. I think you are the one that needs a hug and are just seeing things.
Oh and no, the animation for the grab isn't done... no animations are. At all.
This comes back to the no final Version in Unreal I brought up earlier. We have had the rig re-done like three times, the final Materials haven't been built and frankly, the character package is a freaking mess.
yeah, in comparision with the high quality of the map, the merc and spy looked fugly. the signs "dock", "dining room" etc look pretty bad, too.
i really like what you guys did with club, the athmosphere is awesome and since the map is created by zed, i'm pretty confident the balance will be, too. i can't wait to see some layout =)

all the work is really solid and basically perfect , but im sure you level designers noticed the odd lighting present , just making sure you seen it too .
light fixtures such as lamp covers full bright with almost no ambient light and not even remotely close amount of light being emitted by the object as a light source .
some pictures on the wall are fully lit while in a pretty much pitch black room .
otherwise great work , spooky and interesting , with a proven layout design adaptation , GJ

Map looks absolutely great, it will be pure fun to play it. I like the neck animation (the part that was shown), it seems to be very detailed and violent. Music is very calm but it also gives you this feeling that something unexpected and sudden may happen in any second.
I'm not going to criticize the model appearance cause, in opposite to others, I know what "WORK IN PROGRESS" means.
oh you got the wrong iddea , not criticisms at all and i know its pre alpha but noone would gain a thing if people saw someone working , noticed mistakes and said nothing about them , i was hinting to them not by any means criticising .

Yes, the piece is called "3 Fingerprints". The teaser has about 40% of the track.
Just a post of general praise, but i loved the music and the style of the map. I wasn't a massive fan of the logo before but i thought the animated version was superb, so excellent work whoever was responsible for that.

in some sort of way its similar , but is way nicer in the video .

Something you can't see because of the camera's movement is the track lighting on the ceiling with three spotlights lighting up the paintings. So the light is comming from somewhere. Other then that I agree, I'm probably going to do a complete re-lighting when I can.

Why don't you make it so that there is shallow water (a foot or two) you can fall into? Like the dock leads over a shallow bit and then it gets too deep to fall into? Once you reach the point on the dock where the boat is parked, you can't go any further in the water. Of course there would have to be a little ramp that leads in and out of the water then so mercs can get out and back on land. It would feel a lot less restricted that way. Any dev, or zed, want to confirm if that's possible? Would you consider it?
Also, would you like to elaborate what purpose the theater would serve, or what it would be like?

Westfall, I've realised here that showing work in progress to people is completely rubbish idea because they cricitize every single thing they can. The worst thing is that if they saw this game as a final product, they wouldn't even care about details such as - "the part of chest where spy holds his right hand while breaking the neck" or "I don't like spy fishnets!". I mean come on, its heading towards the complete absurdity, just deal with the fact that when someone makes his own game, he introduces his own vision.
some criticism may lead to a better game. it's not that the devs couln't handle it, they're major enough.

There was plenty of variation from what I saw. On my monitor it didn't look that dark, but that was most likely my monitor's settings.
i think tims done a great job on that map. i like its looks just as much as any sc map (and perhaps a little more). Shadows seemed fine to me, but i suck at story, so who am i to know :P

stonecoldkilla is kinda right. he mentioned something that catched my eye, too: there are no pitch-black shadows at all. but compared with clubhouse, lakehouse is way way darker anyways, and no1 had a problem with this in club.
though i wonder if it will be possible to disable some of the lights in any way (shooting out, hacking panel, objective,...)?

I guess it wasn't just my monitor then, I saw a good amount of "Non-pitch-black" shadows... hehe
But there was light variation but it just didn't go to the darkest extremes.

If I can see detail or texture through a shadow then you can see a spy through that shadow, regardless of monitor. That map looks chock full of it. But I understand that it's pre-alpha, maybe testing should determine how dark maps should be?
there's plenty of cover and camo will pwn harder, so i don't see any balance issues in the areas shown in the trailer. i'd just like to see pitch-black shadows in the areas where it's already really dark/hard to see.
It's pre-alpha and like you said things are meant to be changed, I was just putting forward my suggestion. Regardless of the monitor I think it should be darkened but if that doesn't help you, I cant think of any simpler way I could possibly describe it, issue dropped.

I WAS TALKING ABOUT CT I READ THIS PREVIOUSLY AND COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND. I wasn't referring to project stealth or the trailer in anyway. I was blown away by how much you have done already and everyone(who is smart) understand that this game hasn't been in production very long because ut3 didn't come out all that long ago plus you guys do it in your free time. CT was not to bright you just got to be able to hide when the mercs are coming to always in shadow in the vents behind a wall many places to hide

we wont be be able to prevent gamma hacks....which only work on textures that are not 100% black
as you noticed...spy is still 100% black against 100% black shadow.
Gamma hacks will not work anywhere that is 100%black.
and btw. you can still see the profile of the spy in the screenshot you posted....and i also know that particular corner of wherehouse to know that even without the gamma hack the spy is still visible.
Playing with such a hack is ugly anyways that most people wouldnt enjoy it.

As for the rest of what you said: True, but it is still a LOT easier to see the spy on high gamma.
As I kind of say in previous posts, Cyntrox is right, there isn't enough spots like that.
Cyntrox, we are going to create maps that look good as they are , we cant effictively make good looking maps against people that intend to cheat.
We can only light maps for normal playing conditions.

it doesnt really work like that, and as far I know UT probably does not support lights that remove light (cast negative light instead of normal light)
Lights have a fall off that creates soft shadows which we do not have control over.
This gradation goes from 100% to 0% black and we cannot control the rate of falloff.
For game design purposes we have to light scenes in a way that allows both Spy and Merc to navigate the map without any flashlight or vision mode. So darker shadows actually means less light and that becomes a design problem.
To do this requires breaking up areas. So a dark corridor will have lights at the ends of the tunnels so that player knows where to go....and a light near any other doors.
And dont forget, lighting is an art in itself....much like animation and programming. Its not an easy thing to get looking good.

You can have negative lights, but I highly recommend against using them.
Maybe instead of making negative lights, you can just play around with the normal lights radiuses?

Unreal doesn't calculate light bounces, so all shadows are 100% black if not in direct line of sight of another light. If there is only one light in a map, all shadows cast by that light will be pure black.
It depends if you have a non-blocking light to lighten up dark corners. So I guess we won't have those then :D problem solved.
