2-3 hours of work with my new TX2. First time trying to draw something like this. Gonna try and do a new 40-70 min sketch every day.

Cool drawings though man. I especially like the first one.

i like how you keep geometry simple and play around with the lightning. athmosphere is all about lightning :D
i got a wacom laying around and kinda am in the mood to fool around a little bit again.
which programm would you suggest for landscape/architecture speedpainting and maybe some manga?
so far i've only painted with corel painter. still gotta get used to not seeing what i paint where i paint it xD
I'd say PhotoShop, but since I'm on linux I'm using Gimp.
It doesn't make much of a difference, really. It's all in what interface you like more, and what you can afford.
The second pic looks like concept art for a mix of club house and museum. The long hallways of Club mixed with the look of museum. The columns separated from the wall kind of look like Museum.

Small thumbnail to get the overall look of a much bigger concept piece I'm going to be working on for the next few weeks. As for a program, I've been using Photoshop for over 8 years, and always will.

For a small speedy, I do 900x600, but for a more elaborate one like the one I'm doing currently, I do 3200x1800. I like wide angle shots the best as you can do much more with your perspective.
2 questions:
1. How do you pull up this perspective grid?
2. Do you start from a rough sketch or do you just throw on the colours?
I've got my Bamboo a long time ago and damn I haven't painted anything serious.

I created my own perspective grids in Illustrator, then just open the eps file in Photoshop at the size I need. I have 1, 2 and 3 point grids so I always have what I need. They took a few hours to make, but it's invaluble for me to have them.
I usually start with a rough line sketch, then start coloring over the linework untill I get a good color scheme, and progressively adding more detail as I go.

Hehehe. Yeah, I was looking up some way to pull up perspective grids but it seems there isn't one. It's a pain in the arse to do all of the perspective by hand.
AH! Base render for my concept piece. Worth noting that this is my first ever 3D model. I'm proud.

These pipes are killing me lol but I have to get them done first to light the rest of the scene right.
Cool stuff.
I suggest rendering in a similar way to how 3d software renders.
It will help you break things down into easier segments.

You mean breaking the painting down into pieces? What I'm doing now is I layed the basic colors down, and now I'm working on the pipes, then I'll work on the sewer area, then the building texture, and doing lighting on everything as I go, detailing will be last.
If not, what do you mean?
break it down like this:
Diffuse Pass -self shadowing and accurate light sources of final concept. Its just a grey scale render.
Spec/Reflection pass -all the shiny bits
Color Pass- just the flat color maps without any shadow or light
Shadow Pass.
At the Diffuse Pass, you just need paint in grey scale and get the composition and lighting correct.
Multiply a Color layer on top of this to give the scene the basic texture it needs.
Use linear dodge layer for all Spec and Reflections for shiny parts
And shadow pass.
Its not the traditional way for paint, but its very similar. Its a commmon technique to do a grey scale painting, and then add tints of color on top and the final stage is the specular and shadows.
The method teaches you to break it down to the basics at the diffuse stage without worrying about the tedious details.
Thanks a lot for the tips man. I usually lay the basic color scheme I want down, then recolor it at the end to be exactly how I imagined it. For some reason, I don't like laying down a painting in grayscale first, I like to play with colors a lot while I draw.

30 min speedie.
The yellow is awkward. It should be a very thin line, just so you know it's there, but can't actually see it clearly. It'd look way better.
I agree. Looking at it now, I don't like the lower beach area. I might be fix it later, but it was just a quick speedie so it's not a big deal. It's really just a mood piece.
Maybe you should put the mountain's shadow on the lake, or a reflection of some kind.

If the image doesnt work in greyscale, its not going to work in color (hence the simplifiction of the process)

What part of "NOOO Salt!" don't you understand? It looks like it's sprinkled with salt.
I like your drawing but it's too salty.
I don't get what it is ???
Me neither. It was supposed to be a fountain, but then grew into a cursed scroll-holder, and then i wanted to add a tomb underneath, and I didn't paint the water flowing from the hole in the middle. Also there was supposed to be a cyclops in the background that's reaching for the scroll, you can see the general torso position, and it stayed there because i was painting on 1 layer.
Anyone want to give me free painting lessons or tips?
(yes I know there are tons of tutorials, but I don't know which part of the things i draw/paint is the worst, so pointing that out would help, too.)

special note, surfaces that are emitting bright light, will not reflect light at the same time. Just look at a lightbulb, you wont see any reflections.
If you want it to have both, reflective and emission....then the light will need to be extremely weak and as a result will not illuminate the environment.

Well these aren't exactly emitting light. These are tubes of water, and the tubes are being lit from lights that will be on the metal support bars at the top, which are outside of the tubes, so it would in turn be reflective to the lights around it. So the tubes themselves don't emit any actual light.
Also, the glass isn't the only thing reflecting, as the water inside the tubes will be moving thus refracting the light around it.
Damn. That's pretty awesome graphics for a SvM map.

kk, As you have painted it....the water is emitting the light. Water in a tube does not reflect anything, it is 100% invisible....and only bends the light slightly. The bubbles and particles in the water will reflect light. Same for glass, light will pass through it, and only bend a bit. The reflection it self, will never be brighter then the light source ...and the more transparent the glass gets, the less reflective it it will appear.
read up on "Fresnel" and "Index of Refraction"
What this means, in terms of your painting is that the glass and water should have exactly the same tonal values and gradations as the objects behind it, and for a reflection, use very sharp and crisp highlights using the same value as the light source.
Thanks for the tips. I'll be painting some darker values in there, as well as the rest of tubing that should be visible behind each row to make them seem more transparent and glass-like.
The water will be blue, due to the chemicals they put in them. I don't wanna spoil the maps theme, so I won't say any more about the creepy water. lol.

On Topic:
I like the way your picture is progressing. Slowly getting more and more of the feeling of a real place. At first I thought it was going to be some sewage place.
Then you started getting the light all up in the tubes, moving it into a kind of Science-esque Facility.
Now it's all in perspective (As in I can actually tell heights) and seems like some kind of hidden base. Like some underground company that is attempting weird scientific experiments. (The Chemical kind, not the... Zombie, Oh mah gawd it got out; lets kill it with fire, kind.
Pretty sweet stuff.

I find your Sig picture a little odd. (Not that it's bad or anything, or that you should change it) How you are pointing out PS to the people who have undoubtedly already seen it, or have ventured through the mainpage to find the forums.
It's minor and again not bad in any sense. Just strikes me as Odd.
Thanks bro. You basically got the concept of the map dead on. Good job. I can already see that my perspective is fucked in the top right of the back building compared to the pipes. Haha I'll fix that next time I work on it.
And my sig; Yeah, I use it in other forums and thought it looked pretty sweet lol. Think of it as a teaser for the games UI. It's all glitched up and everything to not spoil too much. ;)

30 min.
do you start with a black or white background?
For that one I started with a really dark grey, then used a brighter grey as a base for the shapes, then shaded. I usually start with an off white then a dark grey or black for linework though. Brush settings usually stay around 50% opacity, 50% flow and then pressure sens set to size, I only change the flow to around 2%-5% for smoke and clouds. Canvas size was 1920x1080.

Such a deep picture. Thank you so much for sharing, Tigaer!
No it's just a picture.

Worked on this for like an hour tonight, been awhile since I last touched it. I tried a few new techniques and made a few brushes that I'm really liking, so I'll be working on this one more throughout the week.

Currently just a few hours in. First time painting a human face. You win the internets if you can guess who it is from the brief WIP I have so far... even though her eyes still need some work lol.
Also, on the subject of tutorials; once I get a little more practice time in on this tablet and am comfortable with my style, I'll start recording speed paintings (basically a 2-3 hour painting sped up to finish in under 10 mins) and putting them up on youtube, so I'll be posting those when I've entered that stage.
I would say Amanda Peet but those eyebrows aren't bushy enough.
Hillary Clinton is my guess.
Some good stuff here tigaer.
Just curious, what do you sketch with?

Photoshop CS5 and my TouchSmart TX2 tablet.
I use Photoshop CS4 and an Intous 4 tablet.
My sketches tend to always be B&W and I render in a semi realistic cross Anime style.
I should try making some sketches like yours, it looks very 'practical' - for lack of a better word.

I'd love to see some of your work. I guess it looks more practical because I'm painting it how I would do a painting on paper; start with a sketch, then paint over starting with midtones and then adding shadows and highlights as I go. My brush settings are; opacity: 60-70, flow: 40. For the hard edged brush I use pressure sens set to size with opacity off, and for soft brushes I use pressure sens set to opacity with size off. For this I'm starting with a rough blocking in of colors with a hard edged brush, then painting over that with the airbrush to smooth out all the shades and give it a more airbrushed look. That's just the process I'm using for this though, I haven't really found a set style yet.
Also, I keep my left hand on 'ctrl' at all times to select new tones with the eyedropper tool for blending. Ctrl is a shortcut for it if you didn't already know that, which you probably do haha.
Heres a project I've been working on over at the official SCC forum: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5271091065/m/7221051568 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5271091065/m/7221051568)
For outlines and straight flat colours I use a hard brush with 100 opacity\flow. For shading I use a soft edge Multiply brush type with about 50 opacity\flow and for highlights I use a Soft-Light brush-type with same O\F as shading. Occasionally vary my brush edge types and opacity for different affects but as of yet I'm still developing my techniques.
I don't often use the keyboard when I've got the graphics pad because Intuos4 have buttons on the side of the tablet for the most common tasks.

I'm planning on joining Deviant Art sooner then later, but I'd like to wait until I have a little more time to expand my virtual art collection. See, I've only been drawing on the computer for a few months - most of my work is only on paper.

Looks great bro. The reason why your drawings look as you put it 'less practical' is because you've kept your linework on top. I paint over my linework, so it gives it a realistic approach, rather than an anime-like look. Very impressive character design though, I like it a lot. I've only been using my tablet for a few months as well, but I've been doing digital art since I was like 11 (I used to make fan Dragonball Z trading cards back then hahaha) so I've been using Photoshop for as long as I can remember. Although, I also do have a strong traditional art background.
I started out scribbling stick figures with magic markers, LoL.
I do like the Anime-like look, it's very stylish IMO. And I feel that it suits my speciality, female character designs.
But yeah, I'll try some more realistic renders. It's always fun to experiment.
Something I really like about your drawings are the 3D environments - I've never been overly good in that area, your work is quite inspirational.
While on the subject of inspiration, check out the CGsociety: (if you havenââ,¬â,,¢t already) http://www.cgsociety.org/ (http://www.cgsociety.org/)
EDIT: I just noticed that you said this is the first time painting a face. Hereââ,¬â,,¢s a couple of tips that help me: make sure the shadows are strong in colour, particularly red and add a touch of blue or green to the brightest highlights.
Also, it looks good so far, but I have no idea who it is. Goodluck
It seems 3Ds Max is another interest we share. Ever want any tips just ask me, I know quite a bit and my brother is a super freak so if I don't know I can ask him. ;D

It's Hillary Clinton.
You also need to make sure that the eye in the shadows still glistens a bit. Eyes are shiny even when there is no light shining on them.
@ Farley
I haven't even started on the eyes, aside from the linework. But thanks for the heads up. It's not clinton though haha she's not that pretty.
Anyway,

Downloaded a pencil brush for photoshop and was messing around with it for like 10 mins. I think it's really fucking awesome and will be using it more because it feels a lot like drawing with an actual pencil. I encourage everybody to try it.

I've never installed a brush before. I wanted to try that pencil one so badly... I installed it, it says I can use it from the brush selection, but it looks so damn, uhh, normal? Does this need an "action" activated for it to work?
I was doodling an old man (with a mouse no tablet :(), and then I realized that there was no way that this was the pencil brush or that it was working. When I realized it wasn't working I gave up and decided to draw animals coming from his ear. I don't know. Don't ask about the gun. Thought it would be funny to do a little "BANG!" flag coming out of the barrel but I didn't leave enough room :D

Use pressure sensitivity, then it works alright.
Did you guys see the 7 legged spider? :D Lennard will get it.
Succubus ur saying I need a tablet? :(
Yes, the 7 legged spider is classic.
Yeah, you need a tablet to use the brush properly due to the pressure sens.

I'd actually go for an Intuos over a Bamboo, just for quality reasons. It's worth the extra money.
Also, I posted this on another forum. Thought it might be of help to somebody if they ever needed it.
Quote(Talking about starting your drawing off simple) ...basically what I would do is start off simple; get the basic form of all the shapes, i.e. eyes, lips. ears, nose, body shape, hair shape and then start with highlights, then move to basic shadows, then blend the highlights and shadows more where needed.
This is a WIP of a painting I'm currently working on, you can see my base color layer, then my current progress.

Oh yeah bro, it's a WIP, the map is like 5x that size. That's just part of the center of the map, bases will be on the side.
Cool. Can't really judge the map till I play it. Speaking of playing it, how will you know you can build this w/o knowing what pieces you have at your disposal? I know it's pretty flexible and they are adding a shit ton of new pieces but it seems weird to plan ahead of time :D
What did you plan to put up on the bridge/plank thing in the top middle? Sword or something? I'd put the new beam rifle thing since it kicks so much ass.
I think it would be kind of fun, to do a Project Stealth map with a design and textures of Halo Reach/3 maps :P That would work quite interesting.

I know most of the pieces already, but I always design the map first, then work it into Forge afterwords. But, if you wanted, you could use these http://www.mlgpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=327540 - but I'm not into using those, I like to design by map without limitations, then transfer that into Forge. And an active camo will be at the end of the catwalk. Camo will be very powerful on this map, so a risk = reward scenario will be best.
Woah that's awesome. That's a lot of pieces.
I usually just screw around in forge and maybe occasionally build something cool like a map or rune goldberg machine or something like that. I wouldnt have much use for that but I'm sure someone who actually makes a lot of maps for competitive play would have a ton of use for that!
Only a few more days until I can make the ultimate infection game type on Forge world! Hahaha gonna have some awesome times with my buddies. It's like legos but with killing and raping and no picking up afterwards. I'll make a thread with my creations when I feel like I have stuff to show.
It's funny how if you have a 360 then you are almost forced into buying halo either by all the ads, the awesomeness, or by all your friends who have already bought it. It's like a contract you enter with microsoft. Buy a 360, then you buy halo. Deal.

And if you really get into it, you can create awesome architectural designs (Btw do not use coloured ready made furniture/props or what so kind, makes your design really crappy looking, best designs are the ones that are kept colourless imo.)
