Title: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on August 25, 2008, 12:08:02 AM
Hi all,

The Project Stealth team would like to invite you to join in becoming the most powerful supercomputer on Earth. How? It's fairly simple basically. It's called 'Distributed Computing.'

Distributed Computing projects are usually scientific projects in order to solve insanely complex problems. For these projects, a lot of volunteers are donating some power of their PC in order to crack the problem. With a few volunteers a project can last thousands of years. With a thousand volunteers the project can be done in one year. With hundred thousand, in less than a week.

The Project Stealth team has decided to join in some of these projects and has decided to make a subgroup. What's that? All DCs have extensive statistics pages. These pages show you how well you do by means of a ranking per team/subteam/overall and more. The goal is to get the most points and thus rank in the top, or preferably in first place.

The projects we chose are:
Folding@Home which tries to find cures to Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
This project comes in two flavours: CPU and GPU. We advise the GPU, since it gets more points.
More information on their site (http://folding.stanford.edu/)

Seventeen or Bust is a brute-force attack on an unproven mathematical problem. More information can be found at their wiki (http://wiki.seventeenorbust.com/index.php/FAQwhatis), since it's a bit mathy. ;)

How to enter Folding@Home (ATI X2xxx-series and nVidia 8xxx-series and up ONLY)
1: Go to the High Performance site (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther) and download the GPU client. (click the first Windows logo for the tray-version)
2: Install
3: Configure the client like this:
username: DPC_Stealth0[here your personal nickname].
Mind the 0 (zero), which is a separator between the subteam (Stealth) name and your own name. As an example, my username is DPC_Stealth0frvge . Mind the capitalization of 'DPC' and 'Stealth.'
Team number: 92 .
Click ok, and it should connect to the server to get work. You might have some firewall popups; just allow it.
4: Right-click the colorful icon in the system tray and hit 'Display.' You should see your configuration details like you name. If it says 'Core is not running', just wait a bit. It's possible it is currently downloading the data.

If you have problems installing, please check out http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinGPUGuide for more information.

How to enter Seventeen or Bust
1: Sign-up at http://www.seventeenorbust.com/signup/ .
2: Log-in and set up your preferences
3: Use the Team Affiliation screen to set-up Dutch Power Cows as team.
4: Go to http://seventeenorbust.com/download/ and download and install the client for your OS.
5: Run the client and hit 'Config'. Input up your previously chosen nickname here. If you want you can put 'DutchPowerCows' as your team here, but this does not really influence the team-settings (only step 2 does!!).
6: Go to http://sob.qik.nl and register. This is done manually, so you might have to wait a bit till you are accepted.
7: Log-in with the password that was sent and set your team to DPC_Stealth.
8: Done

The Contest
So after we've set everything up, it's time for... the Contest of October! You can win a copy of the highly acclaimed SCCT Coop Stealth Walkthroughs by Prerage.com . (more info (http://prerage.com/COinfo.htm)).
From time to time, you can win another prize instead of the sneakpeek, like this month. To be announced. ;)

Past Contests
September: Sneakpeek of ....

Rules/Tips/Guidelines:
- Get as many points as you can for the projects.
- Use as many CPUs/GPUs as you can, as long as you have permission to use them.
- Someone who won once, can't win the sneakpeek-prize until 3 months have passed. This is to prevent that one person who's got a lot of computing power gets all the sneakpeeks.
- Try to get non-PS-fan friends to join under your name, so you get extra points!
- You can also use the F@H CPU versions along with the GPU, for extra points.
- You can run multiple F@H GPU versions (check out the F@H forums)
- The date for each sneakpeek is determined after the results are in and is subject to change. Depends if we have stuff to show ;).
- Sneakpeek can be multimedia or new information in the form of text, like an unannounced announcement.

Way of grading:
An average deviation of both projects will be calculated and the top-2 of the persons who's sum of those deviations is highest, will get a sneakpeek at some of the unpublished things we're working on. The info/media you see in the sneakpeek is not meant to be discussed, neither privately nor publically, until the Project Stealth Team releases it by means of a Tick Tock (or equivalent) thread. If you break this confidentiality, actions will be taken. The way of grading can be changed in between months without notification, or the grading can be simplified. Overall, we decide who the winners are. Sneakpeeks will change in 'value'. One month it might be a cool new video, another month it might be something that you personally don't like.

So for now: happy folding and SoB-ing. See you in one month :)

I've got it on my ps3 but never turn it on. Could I join the PS group if I did?

There should be something you can do in the config-menu, but I don't know anything about the PS3, other than that it's output for F@H is really nice ;)

At first, I read that as saying "disturbed computing". :/

Not fair - I have a sucky PC.
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on September 01, 2008, 08:48:43 AM
Well, the SoB-client and the normal CPU client for F@H work fine. Just not so fast... but that can be countered by using multiple PCs. Which is the goal in the first place.
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on September 02, 2008, 10:36:48 AM
The first statistics are in :) We were 250th place of the subteams yesterday, but 12 hours later, we're already 243th :) With a few more members, we can get top-150 easily overall and top-30 daily.
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on September 03, 2008, 01:53:19 PM
F@H news: DPC_Stealth just passed the 10000 points milestone, with current members Lucy, aj and myself. Freeman also joined but hasn't submitted a result yet, I think.
The SoB team unfortunately needs more members. There's only me there.

i guess its easier to persuade people into helping research for disease cures than solving some weird mathematical problem XD
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on September 03, 2008, 05:12:31 PM
Most of the results of the mathematical problems can be used to optimize some things, be it the perfect measurement between highly sofisticated equipment in extremely sensitive projects. For example, the new particle accelerator's trajectories could be further optimized. And many more things like better MRI-scans, microscopes and so on.

How do we check the status of the team?

I go to the DPC team stats site, but I can't find fridge, lucy, or myself.
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on September 04, 2008, 12:31:17 AM
The individual stats per subteammember can be found
http://kakaostats.com/t.php?t=92&search_text=DPC_Stealth&filter=active (click your name for more details).
The subteams' total ranking (all subteams, all points gathered) can be found http://kakaostats.com/subteam.php?t=92 . Current ranking as of this writing is 219th.

For the _current_ daily stats, http://tadah.mine.nu/?prefix=fah&datum=2008-09-04&tabel=memberoffset .
If you select the checkbox for DPC_Stealth and click the 'Graph' button above, you can see our growth in _daily_ output (not cumulative!). So as long as we keep growing, we are doing better and better and better. Actually, we were 13th place daily of DPC yesterday. I don't know how much that is for the total amount of users, but it's definately good :)

We just broke into tenth place of the daily stats for DPC. That's a great achievement! Let's continue being in top-10, and with some more people joining our team, we can rank even higher.

Current members: frvge, Lucy, aj.

We got the 20000 points milestone as a team today and RobertFreeman has joined us.
Also, the 5.422 points yesterday are good for a ninth place in the daily stats of DPC :D Keep it up.

It seems a lot of people didn't understand, but you can actually win EXCLUSIVE sneak peaks and BEHIND THE SCENE stuff. Currently, 4 members already have a chance of winning this, how about the rest?

Don't be scared by high amount of points, because if you won once, your points are virtually reset to 0 by frvge.

I have it running on my computer (folding for both core and GPU), but am not sure if the results are being submitted online. Fill me in on that sometime.

Make sure teamnumber is 92 and your nick starts with DPC_Stealth0

edit: I see it worked. Nice job.

Hehe I try. 1 gpu and two cpu. I guess I could go for four cpu, since they say 1 per core, but I'll stick with this.
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on September 07, 2008, 06:54:03 PM
The same as my current set-up. 1 GPU at home, 1 CPU at the PS server, and 1 CPU at my gameserver-server. :)

Also, make sure you have the latest drivers. The newer ones have a performance boost.
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!

Newest drivers for my vid card? I took me a while to figure out I needed the CUDA thing. Should I update my actual drivers too?
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!

It might boost your scores a bit. Maybe a 10% increase, which is not bad :) Just try it, if it doesn't hurt, then it's fine.

Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: Ion.67 on September 08, 2008, 10:38:54 PM
Should I download the PS3 one? I am debating whether I want to, just because of my randomly connecting internet connection.

If there is no internet connection, what would happen? Would I just wait until there is one to download another job, or just quit?
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on September 08, 2008, 10:41:35 PM
A PS3 should get quite some points. I dont think you can top Ion tho :P But you can always try.

It tries to download new work units and attempts to send one when it's done. If there's no connection possible between your client/PS3 and the servers at Stanford University, then it just tries again in a minute or something, till it gets the data requested or till it successfully has uploaded the results.

We passed my previous frvge account today and are currently at 139th of the total stats (52,775 points) and 10th in the daily stats. :)

Current members:
frvge, Lucy, ion, aj, RobertFreeman and pstidenburg.

Which means we still have plenty of room for more people :D

ion also got the 10000 points milestone. Congrats :)
Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on September 10, 2008, 12:05:54 PM
We passed the 50000 points as a team today and were 4th!!!!!! in the daily stats.
If we can get a few more members, it should be possible to rank top-5 every day int he daily stats.

Keep it up.

edit: and pstidenburg got his 500 point milestone :) Congrats.

10 minutes until this work unit is done.

And another day:
We ranked 6th daily which is ok. With one more member, which should come soon, we would probably have ranked 5th.

Lucy (18.776 points) got overtaken by ion (19.122 points).

Milestones:
frvge 20000 points
pstidenburg 2000 points

Tell your friends about this thread. The competitive element is addicting ;) (at least for me).

It's mostly for bragging rights and to help science while your PC is probably picking its nose.

Liqu1D133 got 400.000.000 cEMs today.

The amount of points is just the amount of calculations done or something. So it can go fast. Since I'm saving my points for a so-called MegaFlush you wont see me in the stats.

Title: Re: Contest: September DC!
Post by: frvge on September 16, 2008, 05:31:49 PM
Basicaly you queue up your results to transmit all the results that you gathered in one time. So you get 0 points for, lets say 10 days, then on the 10th day, you transmit everything and you get the points of 10 days in one day. That's a high daily score ;).

Monthly stats of Folding@Home: 134.723 points
Monthly stats of Seventeen or Bust: 4.834.898 million points.

ion wins in the Folding@Home category with 72.894 points.
Lucy gets second place with 18.776 points.

Liqu1D133 wins in the Seventeen or Bust category with 2.972.767 million points.

Ion gets first place of the sneakpeek.
Because Liqu1D133 had more days output than Lucy (18 days vs 12), he gets the second place of the sneakpeak. More info about that to be announced later.
Congrats :)

Contest for October will be posted in a few minutes.

Yesterday was the big MegaFlush of the whole DPC team on Seventeen or Bust.

Of course, DPC_Stealth joined in with the following result:

Daily position Daily score     Subteamname    Overall score      Overall position Tests done this day
10.   12.653.505.511      DPC_Stealth   22.509.594   (136)                    2

A 10th place daily is a really good accomplishment, especially because everyone from DPC had been collecting for quite some time.

LiquiD133 and I still need more collegues for SoB ;)
The Folding@Home team's activities has unfortumately decreased a lot. Come on guys and gals, get those PCs working and win a free SCCT Coop DVD (normal average price: 14 euro)!

Almost forgot that we got the 20.000.000.000 (k) cEM milestone. On the way to 25.000.000.000 :P

Also, I extended the contest, because the results aren't impressive enough to warrant me sending free stuff out...

The Folding At Home-team of DPC_Stealth just got its 200.000 points milestone :D
Currently active members are Lucy and I. We definately need reinforcements ;) It's free and you can win nice prizes.

Letting my PS3 sap power all night is definitely not free. Especially for things I can see one or two weeks later anyway. ;D

With only 1 day to go, I decided to give out the prizes now. Lucy changed the SCCT Coop DVD for a  AudioSurf game via Steam. Congrats and have fun with this magnificent piece of indie game :)

Yup, frvge keeps word.
Apart from Lucy, I haven't seen anyone who hasn't won before and/or who has produced a reasonable amount of points. Shame.

The DC contest will be put on hold for a month or two. It'll probably kick in after the SCCT Tournament.
Till then, keep crunching and check back regularly! Maybe it'll be used again for another cool sneakpeak ;)

I overtook Ion's first place in Folding@Home with 82000 vs 81000 points.

Now that my own 4870 is fixed and is crunching happily, I went past the 100,000 point mark a few days ago. Yay.

I'd like to boost the DPC_Stealth team, so let's start folding and crunching again at the first of May. :D The person who gets the most points, will get a custom title that he/she picks himself for 1 month. There has to be a minimum amount tho, which is 15000 FAH points or 1 full test at SoB.

Currently, no.
That's why I'm trying to raise it from the dead.

And with a new month comes a new contest:
The one with the most points after 2-4 weeks wins a sneakpeak of the new PS website, and maybe something else too. If you're not into PS for some weird reason, there's a free Half-Life 2 copy and an AudioSurf if you like casual games better. For exceptional results, you can pick The Orange Box.

If you want to be eligible for the sneakpeak, follow us on Twitter. I doubt you can get the required points in 1 day. But if you want to help DC for the fun of it, feel free to join.

The problem I was having was that my Laptop couldn't quite handle the GPU style, and the CPU doesn't give many points.

Only when I got to my desktop computer over at my friends house was I able to get a couple GPU projects done. When I left I had to turn it off (it's used by others for games when I'm not there).

Reading over this sounds like I'm complaining, but that's not what I'm getting at. Just stating where I was with this whole contest.

Moral of the story: If you want to win a contest, don't take your desktop to your friends and leave it there. ;D

Cronky surpasses Shadow. With a bit of luck we'll be in the top-100 of DPC in a few days. Currently at 103.
