Title: Something that would make this game the ultimate entertainment interface
Post by: WafflesNSyrup on January 11, 2011, 05:44:32 AM
Hello devs Im going to cover a few points that I think many would agree with me when I saw they should have been in chaos theory on pc.

Spectator mode:
for competitive and entertainment and for game popularity it would benefit you greatly to make a spectator mode.
In splintercell chaos theory you have your basic 2v2 layout 2 spys vs 2 mercs and when you die off you can spectator your teamate as he makes his way around the map to eliminate the objectives as a spy or snipe a few heads off as merc.
But many people have told me to submit this on the forum and tiger has also told me to make this post to show other devs.
We need a more sophisticated spectator system rather then limiting the spectator ability to something as slim as i watch my teamate lets make project stealth the ultimate entertainment where you can play or watch.
Lets make a spectate game section.
but im sure your probably wondering, how does this help project stealth?
This will help project stealth by giving it tons of publicity and reputation cause you not only can play the game you can watch it this now brings in streams, broadcasts and many other fans to watch your new game and to watch the veteran players

Unreal engine: Also because were using the unreal engine to have the game made so it shouldn't be to hard to implement this feature especially because the unreal engine is virtually limitless.

Addition Info
I would like the devs to really consider this check it out guys

How can you play when you are already dead?  Doesn't make sense to me.

A spectator is technically already possible (again, we do not use default UE3 infrastructure, in case you missed that), but thanks for posting anyway :)

It would certainly make recording demo's easier for us, hence why the feature is ready to use.

I would like to see powerfull demo recorder + many settings for moviemaking like while watching demos we can delete HUD etc.
It will help in improving beginners skill ( demo sharing ) and will improve MovieMakers work.
Who of you wouldn't see same great movies like does CS or CoD4 community? :)
Demos are just better to share with community than .avi movies:
+small size
+you run it with game, you don't need any codecs
+no rendering a few GB file
+even with slower hardware your FPS won't drop

IMO. when you are dead you should see just black screen + chat. But AgentX told that already some time ago.

+1337, it was pain to make decent screenshots on SCCT without having a special cheat to remove the HUD.

what im saying curd is that instead of you have your 3 lives as spy for example and you lose all your lifes now you watch your teamate right? till he dies off. Thats as far as spectator mode went in SCCT so if project stealth made is more sophisticated like dedicating server space to let 10 people watch the game would potentially or almost for sure bring a bigger reputation to the game project.

Yeah that was already discussed as far as I remember, but the problem is, some sad idiots can be ruining it by having 3 people spectating and give away information about the opposite team via voice chat of some external software.

well... i think i got a possible solution for that.... how about giving the host the possiblitlity to set a delay for spectators...

I mean the spectators are always 10-60 seconds behind...

example:

0:00

players
spies start to rush

spectators
delay timer: game starts in 10 sec

0:10

players
a merc kills a spy with the help of a surprise nade

spectators
spies start to rush

0:20

players
1 spy breaks the neck of a merc

spectators
a merc kills a spy with the help of a surprise nade

0:30

players
the spy hacks a comp

spectators
1 spy breaks the neck of a merc

you get what i mean? Is that technically possible?

You mean like giving them a latency lag on broadcast? That sounds quite interesting, even 10 seconds delay on the actual match would be really great.

It's possible Neo, that same solution is used for SourceTV by Valve :)

Of course i don't mean giving the specs a ping of 10000... but well i think you get what i mean  ;)

The only issue is wether the actual positions are sent 10 secs later by the host...
or in real time but the specs' Project Stealth just shows it 10 secs later...

@ston3coldkilla

oh that is good^^ i had the feeling that my post would be just ignored :o

Same thing they use in Xfire Broadcast, there is always latency of what happens.

Is there still anything that stops "spectators for PS"?

Nothing beats GTA IV's "The Trashmaster", haven't completely seen it yet (it's 90 minutes), but it's just awesome. You actually feel thetesntion ariound 17 minutes into the movie!

SO WHAT ABOUT SPECTATORS ?!?!?!

They will remain dead and sticked to your partners ass so you will be forever and ever ashamed of yourself for dieng.
Title: Re: Something that would make this game the ultimate entertainment interface
Post by: Ion.67 on January 14, 2011, 09:37:10 PM
Haha, 10 people will not be spectators, they will be players... It is a game, you play games. Any work that goes into making the spectator mode useful is wasted time. Game play brings players, not watching others have fun.
Title: Re: Something that would make this game the ultimate entertainment interface
Post by: DreadStunLock on January 14, 2011, 09:54:26 PM
Disagreed, if Project Stealth going to have a Tournament events, I would love to see top 10/100 or whatever play on the very last round to see who is the winner.
Title: Re: Something that would make this game the ultimate entertainment interface
Post by: Ion.67 on January 14, 2011, 09:59:08 PM
So in the event that this game gets big enough to have a tournament, and your time zone works out, and there are multiple others that are interested in watching rather than playing, this is an average idea. Not too big of a use.
Title: Re: Something that would make this game the ultimate entertainment interface

Not too big of use yes, but implementing it isn't so hard either.

of course the game itself has priority... but noobs can learn from better players by spec-mode

Tournaments?

Commentators giving a play by play?

Oh I'm lovin this. Watched a StarCraft tournament video the other day with two Korean guys goin at it. I have no clue what the hell the commentators were talking about, but they were so excited about it that I felt the pressure! What's his face was going for the Golden Mouse! APM is OVER 9000!!!!

We just need two fine gents that can make aggro spies and mine placements sound like a life or death situations.

"Pat, this is usual mine placement for this map."

"Yeah, looks like he's going with a 2-1 spread in the pirate room and museum respectfully".

"Now this is a break from this guys normal behavior in game. He's taking it nice and slo... OHMYGAWDAGGROSPYJUSTRANINANDWENTFORTHENECKSNAP!!!!!"

"WHAT A GREAT PLAY BY THE SPY!! I DON'T KNOW HOW THE MERCS ARE GOING TO COME BACK FROM THA.. OHMYGAWDDOUBLEKILLFORTHEMERCPARTNER!!! WHY WERE THEY STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO EACHOTHER!?!?!"

"Tea-bagging, Pat. It must to be done."

@Cronky:

Who the hell told something about commentators?  ???
Title: Re: Something that would make this game the ultimate entertainment interface
Post by: Cronky on January 15, 2011, 07:12:26 AM
@Cronky:

Who the hell told something about commentators?  ???

Who the hell WOULDN'T talk about commentators? ???

Spectator mode has little practical uses because it's simply for viewing people playing a game that they could be playing themselves. While you could learn some techniques by watching more experienced players, it's a very loose use of the word "Learn". You're again... just watching. You could watch a million videos about how to draw a realistic human figure and still only be able to draw a stickman (and not a very good one at that).

Now with tournaments you would of course need commentators. Why? Because all good tournaments have commentators. If Starcraft wasn't a good enough example. Take UT and the announcer commentating on your current action or status. HEADSHOT. KILLING SPREE. RAMPAGE. M-M-M-MONSTER KILLLLL. Now that's a computer. Not exactly what I was getting at above (that's again more of an announcer), but still. Olympics as another example? Sports of many flavors also?

How am I supposed to understand how much skill was in any single round of a Pro-level game of PS if I don't have someone shouting vaguely technical, yet obvious statements about what the players are doing? Perhaps with some humorous banter between the two commentators (I like the idea of two. More lively.)

PLUS commentators just sounds NIICE when you use it to describe a match. Imagine if you will that you're looking up a match on Youtube. It's titled " PS Tourney Semi-Finals Round 1: Mario Bros Vs Double Dragon | Commentated by Lone Ranger & Tonto" (Each group has two people, get it?). Sure, long name, but after a few matches they wouldn't have to put their name on it anymore. You'd just KNOW. Just has a nice sound to it. Like it was something more than a match of a game that you wouldn't care about otherwise. How many full on matches of CoD do you watch that aren't titled "!!!AMAZING NO DEATH BLOPS MATCH WIZZOR 25-0!!!" or something similar? I'm guessing not many.

So in short, WHO told something about commentators? ME. It was the natural progression of a Spectator mode in my mind. Without commentators, you just have a bunch of people watching a game in silence.

Could they take spectator to another level in tournaments?? Give commentator slots and spectator slots. Commentators can be heard by spectators, but spectators can't talk. Can spectators talk to each other in general? Or is it just a silent viewing (sounds boring).

I've gone on long enough.
(Did you read the whole thing? Because I will be impressed if so!)
(P.S. I hope this is read as sarcastically as possible. I do like commentators though ;))

I so agree, you guys definitely should hire a commentator or a good speaker for your tournaments, maybe Rambo will do it :P He seems to be PS closest person that is not a developer :P
Title: Re: Something that would make this game the ultimate entertainment interface

Idea:

Rotating player slots. Say you're playing a normal 2v2 match, but with 10 people in the lobby. 4 people are randomly chosen to play at the beginning of the match, and when one person dies, the next player in line is selected and they get to play for 1 life. Kind of like Duel from UT, where people are "in line" and when one of the active players die, he's sent to the back of the line and next person respawns in his place. This would work better for gametypes like Deathmatch, or even a new gametype designed specifically for this.

This way, spectating is exciting for all the players, because most likely they will be able to play sooner or later. They all get to chat and hang out while they're in the "waiting room" watching the active players and laughing at their mistakes. I do this all the time on UT and Halo, and it's really fun for just chill games.

Not like I don't already like the idea of spectating in a normal match, because I love watching good players on CoD, UT and Halo, and I'd definitely use it in PS when I really don't feel like playing but want to watch, instead of searching on YouTube for shitty gameplay, ya know? Of course spectating can be locked or turned off for ranked/serious matches and what not to discourage cheating via a third party voice program and that sort of thing.
Title: Re: Something that would make this game the ultimate entertainment interface
Post by: puuusianka on January 15, 2011, 12:44:04 PM
Ofc they wouldn't be divided into some kind of teams in the waiting-room right? No matter which team partner dies the Next players are chosen from all 10 ppl, right? If so the idea is good even great.

But still what if we have noobie who is waiting im the vent whole game.

This would actually remind the good times of Star Wars Knight: Jedi Academy/Jedi Outcast, where you were able to create duel matches.

Post by: Cronky on January 15, 2011, 01:58:23 PM
I like this idea.

ADD IT TO THE LIST!!!

Another game type! Plus I just keep thinking of how much it makes sense in the context of the game. One spy/merc dies, another different spy/merc shows up to replace them. Just makes it sound even more LEGIT.

That, tournament commentary, and PT Sabotage and I'll probably never stop playing this game. ;)

If they "Fuk DM" then the Project won't really be alive as SCCT, haven't you noticed versus is alive only because of DM and few story servers? It may suck, but they still make a bit of money out of that.

Not DM makes game alive, CT is dead even with DM, so it doesn't really matter.
They have to work on better/more important things, DM shouldn't exist in SvM

blah blah blah. It's going to be in there anyway. Why? Cause I assume 99% of the work is already done for them when it comes to making a "Deathmatch" mode. You already lose the round if you lose all your lives regardless of the mode. DM is just taking out the objectives.

Now if they go and make deathmatch unique somehow then there might be a little bit of work ahead of them, but most of what made DM different than Story in CT was simply:

-Lack of Objectives

-Mode specific map elements*

*Not ALL the devs would be working on making a map for DM. A mapper with a good knowledge of this Kismet thing sounds like all that's needed. Plus whoever s/he wants to drag in to make special things (new textures/objects/etc). There doesn't even have to be any Dev members at all, because the community is going to have access to all these things to create their own maps.

Whether you personally like DM or not, it'd be dumb of them to not put it in when people obviously played it. Looks better to have more modes anyway.

But how sad it would be if DM would be the ''main'' gamemode in PS? :)
I hope people in PS more people will play Story, CT is dead just because of DM atm.
Newbie come to game and play in easiest gamemode and after some time he got bored of it and uninstall game. That's one of many things which ruining CT in these times, another one are cheats.

Just because you don't add a DM mode doesn't mean everyone is just going to go, "Oh, well then I guess I'll just have to play Story". If someone doesn't like what's offered in Story Mode, and it's the only thing offered, they will just move on to another game.

With that in mind CT isn't dead because of DM. It's dead because no one plays anymore, and on a unrelated note a (seemingly) majority of those that still do play would rather play DM.

DM though will never be the "MAIN" mode of the game. Everyone knows that the game is set up for the objective based gameplay. Spies hack this, Mercs defend that. Story mode is Story mode because it goes with the fictional "Story" of the game. Deathmatch is always going to be the offshoot of that mode that just takes the rules away and tells you to kill each other.

It's all going to be dependent on how varied the story mode is in PS that will deem whether it's played the most. Otherwise people will just default to DM because it's easy to understand, easy to get into, and it's something that everyone knows how to play even if they've never played the game before.

I understand Knooger. Why? Because he loves this game and he wants everyone to feel it the same way he does. He can have a word on the subject of DM and noob players who are connected deeply with this game type since he does own everyone in every gametype (No Agent, don't tell me another story from your book of legends and myths, same to you Mazen wherever you are...).
Now I believe the dm mode will be implemented since it can be enjoyable and breaks the fear of getting close to mercenaries at least in the begining.
CT DM was very very very very boring. It was even more interesting with alternate but then again in fight 2vs2 mercs would statistically win most of the games. I hope PS just won't screw it up to the lvl when it will be boring. It can be unbalanced but should not be boring.

Nope, not until you prove to developers why it's needed.

Back on topic: What I mean was that for developers, Story has it's own element and gamestyle, DM should also have that, maybe even adding extra animations.

earn you anything I know it from autopsy. I made one guy who was playing DM for ~2years to play story, he is just average, it didn't learn him anything.
Don't say DM is not  the main  gametype in CT... how it is not when, I go on ubi on the evening and I see 8 DM servers and 2 story?
In CT Deathmatch should be replaced with Diskhunt ( very under rated gametype ), it's more interesing and learn you more than crappzy DM, DH learn you maps + basics of EQ and it gives you that what's pusiek about "enjoyable and breaks the fear of getting close to mercenaries at least in the begining".
Anyway Devs will do whatever they will want to do, it's their game and their choice, since this game will be free ( I hope somehow I could pay them in any way ) I will just waste my time on posting and waiting for game.

PS. That guy is 40 years old at the moment.

You missed my point. By main mode of the game, I meant the mode that is the primary mode of the game. The one the game is built upon, not the one that is played the most. Deathmatch is just Story mode with no objectives.

Again though, not everyone CARES for Story mode (SM). If CT didn't have DM then that doesn't mean that those 8 DM matches WOULD be playing Story mode. It means they MIGHT be playing Story mode. Either those DM people would be playing, or not. So either you would have 10 Story modes (8 DM + 2 SM) when you signed on, or just the 2 Story modes (the two that were there already).

Also I want to re-emphasize the learning curve between DM and SM. Everyone knows what they're getting into when they enter a DM sever. Kill each other till one team loses. Every game now a days has one of these, so you can jump in and know the gist of what's going down. SM has 3 different objectives, each that are "Taken" differently, and reaching one may not be possible till you "Take" another. Disk Hunt on the other hand plays a lot like a one sided Capture the flag, but it's name doesn't represent that so I believe that would turn off new players looking to get into ALL that is SvM.

Really though, all modes taught you the Maps, all modes taught you the basics(controls). DM has it's limitations on what it teaches you (objectives and their defenses aren't taught),  but it far from taught you nothing if you played it. Just because someone goes into a Story mode game after 2 years of DM-ing and loses doesn't (always) mean that they are worse at the game, just that the priorities that DM teaches you don't translate to Story mode.

Instead of 4/10 playing at a time, why not make multiple games and all 10/10 can actively have fun?

Maybe PS can make something like a conquest mode? Like the one in BF2142 or any other Battlefield game that has it? Sure there will be some tweaks, but heckm that a new mode right there?

Yeah that was already discussed as far as I remember, but the problem is, some sad idiots can be ruining it by having 3 people spectating and give away information about the opposite team via voice chat of some external software.

well... i think i got a possible solution for that.... how about giving the host the possiblitlity to set a delay for spectators...

QFE.

Really nice idea dude.
