Title: Our Kickstarter: discuss it here
Post by: frvge on April 26, 2014, 02:45:18 AM
Hi all,

As said in the Information section, we'll start a Kickstarter within a week (unless something really weird happens). You can use this thread to discuss it and to give feedback.

Thanks,

Frank

1. Where will the kickstarter be? (kickstarter.com?)
2. Whats the goal ammount of money?
3. There should be more promotion for the kickstarter. My idea was to ask some youtubers to promote it. I think that FRANKIEonPCin1080p once said in a video that he spent like 1000 hours in SPCT SvM on xbox. Having some gameplay footage would be good for this (what about the trailer you have talkend about in another thread?)

HI Ayac,

1: it'll be on kickstarter.com, yes.
2: you'll see when it goes live. It's quite a lot of money, but it's already way down from earlier budgets
3: I'm in contact with him :)

Nice to hear.
Have you contact to other youtubers? If yes, who?

No, I'm not really familiar with them besides pewdiepie. If you know youtubers who would be interested in giving us some exposure, please let me know :)

I think Centerstrain01 could be interested. He said that he is more into the stealth genre. Maybe Threatty. There could be more, but most of the youtubers just played the singleplayer and then left the game :-\

Oh god please don't dare to contact pewdiepie about your game if you dont want a bunch of 12 year old raging kiddies in your game destroying the hardcore gameplay.

TotalBiscuit is another respectable youtuber who is doing honest reviews, but for him I would wait until a later stage of production. (Altough im not sure if he does multiplayer reviews and he mostly focusses on game production and the idea of the game and less on gameplay.)

Eurogamer seems freindly to indie projects.

Anyway if kickstarter amount of pledge will be high...there should be a big adv compaign....borders must include not only youtube, but gaming sites (coop-related, multiplay, indie, news), social networks.

But, as marketist, I can say that the main problem is a lack of new information: so if random stranger came on your youtube account, or twitter, or even facebook and site - he will see that last posts are dated long time ago, and there is not much of them.  As I see this situation: in this point developers should look on socialization -  make daily posts in social services (even if you're dont have new info, you always can represent something like "tip-of-the-day", it can be not important but interesting to read (in example: did you know that flashlight useful range is nearly 30m?)). Crowd will see that there is text to read, and they will read, and they will subscribe and the will be glad to see any, even not big-deal, notify.

Developers already said that project stealth is "community-driven", so there is one simple truth to understand: if developers will start to speak with crowd - crowd will start to speak with developers.

Sorry for my english..not native one...

It's sunday now so probably the next reasonable kickstarter release day would probably be tomorrow

Correct, it was supposed to launch tomorrow. However, we've gotten some feedback about it and we want to give it a little more time to pimp the graphics. I'm still hoping for a launch this week.

A few. Mostly extra maps.

imo I see nothing wrong with the graphics if we look at the asylum video , lets hope not  that by graphics you mean things like Bloom to the point where you can see your own reflection off the spies head :|

I think he means the presentation.

@frvge
Probably too late, but how about an several player models for spies and merc and a map editor for custom maps?
Title: Re: Our Kickstarter: discuss it here
Post by: frvge on May 12, 2014, 11:25:14 PM
Upgraded player models are in the stretch goals to keep the normal goal as low as possible. For custom maps, you'll probably need a UE4 license from Epic Games. It's 20 dollars. IMO a good price for the technology of the best engine, but maybe too big of a barrier for entry.

I guess you should say that on FB too...

Will you remove those UDK pics on the website and replace them with some hudless UE4 pics? Or simply write "PRE-ALPHA","Not actual gameplay pics" or something? People think that they are too old for be in UE4.
Title: Re: Our Kickstarter: discuss it here
Post by: dYnAm1c on May 13, 2014, 08:04:55 AM
I think 20$ is a price that everybody can easily pay if he wants to create custom maps since you actually don't need a subscription to continously use UE4. How do you think you will handle custom maps? Like will you have to approve them or can creators place custom maps in their folder and then the players will download them in the lobby or do they have to download them manually before starting the game like in Chaos Theory?

From my understanding, the 20$ are a monthly subscription for using the UE4. Or do you mean an other vrsion of the editor?

You don't have to subscribe, you can pay 20$ once and then cancel the subscription, you just don't get updates anymore.
Then if they add something fancy that you absolutely need you just pay 20$ once again and get the latest version, cancel again, be happy.

Preparing it for consoles will take time and resources. Then there's devkits and an expensive certification program. The answer is: we'll see. We'll release on as many platforms as possible, given the resources that we have. We prefer having a good PC experience over a mediocre PC experience and a mediocre console experience tho. PC is our core audience :)

Seems pretty low compared to other big titels. But i guess you're saving on advertising?Only 4 maps and the game machanic should also save a lot.

Now to the actual reason i came here: What about Lobbys/Matchmacking? Will we have something like dedicated servers we can rent at provider or host ourselvs? I fear that if we have MM like other games as CoD or even Blacklist, it will be a nightmare.

They already did a lot of stuff, thats probably why it's a bit lower. Also it's a hardcore game, I guess it will be a bit harder to get something like that funded.

Just realized that 90k is actually a quite high number. Right now the project needs at least ~3100$ per DAY to be successfull.
I think there is a lot of advertisement that has to be done to achieve this.

I just made calculations. IF, I repeat, IF excatly the 800 (rounded up) people who liked the facebook page donated and no one else, then everyone would have to donate 112,50 € to reach the funding goal... I hope the PR gears start spinning as soon as possible, because right now it's hard to find this game by google and we only have 1 month time.

Going by this the future should look bleak, but since it seems that you guys don't seem to worry about it at all it seems you have some hidden trick up your sleeve that we know nothing of as of yet. I think the most money will be probably flowing in around the beginning of June since then people mostly get their paychecks.

Well, let's hope for the best.

wow, 2 people already pledged 150€ or more. But we still didn't even cross 1000€! frvge, what is going on? Why cannot I hear anything from you guys? I really hope you are holding special Team meetings to discuss the next PR steps, because right now it is going too slow and that was merely the fans who wanted to donate from the beginning. Soon the people will come that didn't have a creditcard by using mywirecard or something similar (this includes me), but right now we need a boost! Please tell me you got an undoubtable master plan for this!

BTW, is it impossible to get both Beta access as well as a mention in the credits? I am probably going for exhaustive hacker as a minimum, but that does not include "leave a trace behind" according to the description.

EDIT: Ok, just saw the article (interview) at gamingbuddha, that's what I am talking about! With this maybe we have a chance!

The reward tier that's one level above the credits should have had a reference to that tier. Even after looking through it multiple times by multiple people we didn't catch that error. Someone already backed it, so I can't change the text anymore :(

The PR campaign by our external company hasn't started yet because journalists are apparently busy with Noric Game conference. I disagree, but it's their specialty. Of course I'm a bit saddened by the lack of virality that we had when we launched the new site. That was epic.

I just hope we'll get picked up by the media after the weekend. 1% based on organic pledges isn't bad. I did expect a lot more.

Please share and spread the word about our Kickstarter. We need it :)

I've send the news to IGN yesterday, but it looks like that those fucks are ignoring me! Also why PC gamer didn't released news as well?
The ubiforum thread is still alive, and the strange thing is that the managers/mods are moving other threads in the OT forum and not mine... lol very strange.

You cant add Paypal to Kickstarter and a paypal not connected with kickstarter would not have a good overview (and obviously won't help the kickstarter to succeed).
Also IGN is a bunch of money loving console fanatics, if you didnt throw a bunch of money at them they probably won't give a sh*t.

I just backed Project stealth with the 25 Euro package!

I would like to see you guys (PS Dev team) MUCH more enthusiastic and optimistic about this however. I would like you guys moving around more on Youtube. Make a Youtube channel and have some kind of blog. Video responses to questions or simply self-introduction videos so that the fans "get to know the devs on a more personal level".

You guys need to be more Machiavellian about this whole thing, like all big companies. See how star citizen posted a lot of emotional appeals all over the internet about shit like "Hello, I am the development team leader and I am a family man..." "These are my hobbies..." "And this is why you can trust us in developing this game" "This is why developing this game is important for the future of online gaming in this genre"

Write some notes about why people should play your game, why there is a need for this game in the online gaming world, why there may be a lack of interest in this genre (ubi failures) in online gaming.
Why are you doing this?
Why is it important?
Why should people trust this project and development team?

Present this as a promotional Youtube video!

(Don't mention anything about 7 years of development! This sounds quite bad to the newcomers! Believe me!!! DO NOT DO THIS)

If you guys truly want this project to succeed you must begin to act like a real company, even though you guys may not feel that way yet. You must be more active in presenting a positive image of yourselves to the world.

Just my two cents of constructive criticism...

YOU MUST  have Linus Tech Tips or Linus Techquickie (youtube channel) make an ad about you (very cheap ad with high level of viewers!)

There is also Joanne Tech Lover she used to work for NewEgg, she recently started working on her own, so she needs help expanding her Youtube channel (she already has quite a big Newegg user fan base) she is very down to earth. YOU MUST CONTACT HER TOO!

DO IT NOW! NOT NEXT WEEK! AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Monday ? No. It has to be sooner then that, Rad roach is right you only have 27 days so the sooner you act the better , because each day you don't act you lose peoples interest .
+1 Today it's the day! Go on and update those pages frvge.

I saw Centerstrain01 playing SCDA and SCB multiplayer so I tried to send him an email about the kickstart, I hope he will accept to make a video about it.

Can someone please translate this well? It looks like an attack against project stealth :/ http://www.factornews.com/actualites/project-stealth-n-arrivera-probablement-pas-a-infiltrer-kickstarter-38916.html Yea, i think they are saying "Project Stealth will fail because ubisoft will release another splinter cell game in the next year, with Spies vs Mercs included" , seems like they don't know that ubisoft isn't supporting Blacklist anymore and they do the same with every game.

Why so quiet? Guys! Show something! Say something! I know you guys have to do lots of things but still, it would be nice if the dev team showed something. 10% of the funding time is over, but we don't even have 2% of the funding goal yet! I want to see...... something!

Come on guys. Please just tell me that the PR-gears were a bit blocked because of temporal RL-issues which were resolved a few moments ago and that shit is about to hit the fan!

I agree with Roberto here. You have to show more presence, you must not look like people who just want to stay in the background and create the game, but you should instead EMBRACE the "COMMUNITY-DRIVEN" aspect here!

I got laid off at work and got a badly-timed gig to do lights for a festival with 200 visitors which took 20+ hours of my time last weekend. Now I'm working with HR to be let go ASAP so I can focus on PS again. Also, my PC is being a *$%&$ by giving me blue screens of death :(

Soooooo we're working on it. The offcial press release has been released today. Yay.

woow. The chaff effect is really fantastic! Better than the one in the trailer! Also the running animation isn't bad too.

Oh nice the movement definitly looks much better than what we saw before, good to see some improvement there and the chaff effect really also looks quite good.

I contacted Joanne Tech Lover, she said she may mention it in her next Vlog.

She said the game looks good, but that it might be hard for her to talk about something she hasn't tested out.

She told me to let her know when there is a some kind gameplay test so that she can try it out (she usually streams her gaming via Twitch TV so it should be a good idea to let her have beta access or whatever.)

Well... according to the kickstarter page the Beta would in September... IF the funding succeeds that is...

Linus Tech Tips email (business inquiries only): LinusTechTips@gmail.com

I refrained from contacting him since I can't "do business" with him directly.
I believe he charges pretty much only like 20 dollars for a sponsor ad, which is very cheap and has very very high exposure (trust me). Project stealth must invest 20 dollars.

I contacted Nixie Pixel (No response yet) but I told her that there is potential for this community developed game to be transferred to Linux (once ported to Mac OS) and hopefully that will motivate her to mention this game in her next video!

I also posted a thread about PS in the Star Citizen forum!

I'm starting to run out of ideas! We need more help!

We need Google to show PS when people search generic keywords like "spy versus merc"

I search Spy versus merc and I only get splinter cell results in the Youtube hits.

We need to find a way to make Project Stealth appear on Google search with broader terms. The only way to make Project Stealth appear on Google is to search "Stealth action multiplayer" "Project Stealth"

Frvge, you must add the "Spy versus merc" "SvM" "Spy vs Merc" "Spy vs. Merc" and maybe even "SCCT" or "Splinter cell" tags to all of the Project Stealth YouTube Channel videos.

PS must get more search hits!!!

I agree. I think if PS would be known enough, we would get the funding done, even though the opions are split in black & white (i.e. some totally dislike this idea while others praise it to the highest heights) over this project. But that is exactly the problem. We must reach the "everyday gamer" somehow to find those seeking a hardcore game like PS. The good thing is that PS is not a no-brainer, but it does not hurt the project if the kiddies don't support the project, because they don't own a credit card (though I cannot exclude the possibility that some kids can make their parents support a project, like they make them pay for their WoW account for example). However the kiddies are those who usually spread the word very fast around the globe, so not having that is quite a problem to get well-known or even popular.

I just feel like suddenly when the project started, the dev team is either throwing out footage to show, but neglecting to actually get an audience for that footage. Wasn't there an "external PR firm"? Did they start working yet? Because to be honest I don't see any greater effects yet. Granted, I didn't donate yet either, but I will still have enough time to do that after my early exams. The point is that PS will never reach its funding goal if most people don't even know of the existence of Project Stealth. And even from the people who know Project Stealth... they may not know that the kickstarter started!

If something must happen it should happen fast, the Kickstarter is already around 16,000$ behind its schedule.

I see that there is a very poor understanding of how Kickstarter works.

We must emphasize to the people that their money is not taken until the kickstarter ends only if the goal is met.

Neosuperior, you must back PS NOW. Why? Because the more backers there are, the more promising the project looks.

Yes, the progress is slow, and the probability is low, but you have nothing to lose! And, if newcomers get the sense that this will not succeed then they will not bother to back PS.

They must understand that their money will not be taken in the worst case scenario in order to motivate them to donate.

As long as no one knowns about this project, that is irrelevant. That issue must be solved first...

You are contradicting yourself. I said this not to start a flame war or to offend you, but because you implied that you plan on donating to project stealth either way (whether the kick starter fails or not). All I am saying is that nothing good can possibly result from us (long-time PS fans) slacking off and donating at the last minute, and that we lose nothing by acting early. Our attitude towards this kick-stater is manifested in our pledges. The pledge statistics shown on the site, in turn form a sort of collective morale, which will surely influence the newcomers' perception of PS and their subsequent actions (pledge and follow, or forget forever) the second time around a kick-starter is launched.

Of course you can do what ever you want in the end, and we all know that this kick starter may have not been handled the best way possible, but I am saying that our support as a community of PS is important so that this project has a higher chance of succeeding in future attempts if not this one (trying not to be too negative).

For sure, there are at least 780 people who have heard (at least vaguely) about this game (Facebook page likes).
With simple math we can calculate all probabilities and get technical about everything. We won't like what we see, but the ugly truth is not only that, but also the fact that of those 780 people only 70 have pledged due to attitudes such as yours. ("This is irrelevant, that's irrelevant, fix this! Fix that! Bleh bleh bleh!")

The best thing we can do at this point is work hard during this kick-starter to promote it as much as possible so that the second attempt has a higher chance of being successful. If we slack off now and say "oh okay we we'll get it right next time" it will be the same story all over again.

Like I said we need to be more Machiavellian about this; if we want it to succeed, we need to disregard "our" mistakes and do our best to keep this project moving forward even against all probabilities or odds.

Notice, I am not saying "have faith and it will magically happen" or anything superstitious like that. I am saying the more we do now, and the sooner we act, the higher the probability that this project will succeed in a near future. Lets not all just point our fingers at the devs and blame them for everything.

All of us here claim ourselves to be hardcore SCCT fans and all of us have known this project for a very long time and very few of us are actually pledging! Look at the numbers!

Lets stop this hypocrisy and negativity and lets start helping so that this game finally becomes a freaking reality! There is no point in waiting for anything to happen.

You overestimate the willigness of people to pay for something. That about 10% of the known community are actually willing to donate something, is actually quite a lot. The problem is simply that I don't have a credit card and I want to be careful not to accidently tap into any cost traps from using a prepaid-online-credit-card. I am sure there are a lot of people who got a similar problem and may or may not pay much later or at the last second. I actually forgot that tomorrow is "Ascension of Christ", which means I actually got 1 more free day than I expected to have, so I guess I am lucky enough to deal with this by tomorrow. My point about PS, or rather PS's kickstarter not being well-known enough still stands though. Going by the donations so far I am a bit worried about the size of the community that the size of the donating community and the amount these numbers must reach...

I am glad to see that frvge is calling out to the community to spread the word around. I am still wondering about where that "external PR firm" is right now... because as of yet I saw NOTHING of these people (unless they are the guys who control the facebook account).

The thing that the game is in developement for so many years and that there is yet so little to see probably scares most of the people away and think that the game may never be finished even if the funding succeeds.
Also the other Versus games like PT and CT never had the biggest player base. In the height of these games there were maybe a few 100 people online at the same time, which of course still is enough for a 2v2 game, but most people don't know that. Another thing is that it's a hardcore game, the learning curve is very long and you need a lot of practice to get good (the subpar tutorial in the Splinter Cell games were probably another reason why it never had the biggest playerbase).

Our best shot is to attract the Splinter Cell Blacklist newb fan base.

Frvge, you really must change the Project Stealth video tags so that Project stealth appears when people search for Splinter Cell Blacklist online gaming videos.

There is a very large amount of people recording their SvM Blacklist gameplay and posting it to Youtube. Project Stealth must tap into this online community.

I posted a thread on the Star Citizen forum. I am not sure if this forum is exclusively available to Star Citizen backers such as myself, but if any of you guys can reply to thiis thread in a positive manner I would appreciate it. We need to keep this thread at the top of the "Other Games forum" so that more people read it.

I think that Project stealth must reach about 9,000 Facebook likes so that 90,000 euros can be obtained with about 4,500 people pledging 20 euros each. A 50% pledge percentage may also be high considering that our current pledge percentage is about 9.5%.

The truth is that the Project stealth budget must be reduced to at least a part-time project budget with a sub-minimum wage salary. Big sacrifices must be made, but I think that once this game goes live on Steam or whatever it will pick up a lot of hits and it will be purchased.

Frvge, you really need to stop caring about "being spammy", this project needs to be promoted at all costs. We are too late in the game to worry about little things like that.

Well...
Something moved. I come back every half a year and this half a year was The one i waited for.
6 years of waiting make me feel happy already. And from this place i have a question.
Does this KS campaign mean anything to you? I mean that it's poor chance to get 90k Euro.
You know that i am the one who always were screaming at devs. Yet it helped.
Maybe it's like being angry shit-rager all the time but i think that some of my posts made you put game on greenlight.
It may look like that i am someone. No. I've just been a flaming troll . Yet i think i t helped.
GL in the Kick starter campaign , yet i think you should lower your base goal.
PS: You should give some bonuses to old forum members too :D

Guys...
How did you expect to get the amount of people needed to raise this sort of money without having a demo or any sort of release? This has been in development for like, seven years, and there hasn't been anything to play. There's no way the kickstarter can raise that much money on its own with that sort of track record.

In 2 days half of the time is over and only 2% are funded yet, I think it's safe to say that the kickstarter failed if there is not suddenly some rich guy that spends thousand of dollars and its also pretty unlikely that the project suddenly gets a few thousand backers out of nowhere.
