In the words of one of my friends:

I can't wait until the world cup is over so that I can go back to passively ignoring soccer instead of actively ignoring it.

i got the feeling most "fans" that don't play soccer themselfes just join the fan crowd to feel part of a large group in which behaving like a monkey is accepted. it's just too easy. you wear some fan shirt, disable your brain with tons of alk and BAMM you got friends everywhere and can pretend to have a fun/manly/... hobby. or switch to another small talk topic when talking about the weather gets too ridiculous.

Well, if you have actually played the game for 12 years, then you gain some appreciation for it.

Farley4Fan

Well you have to have appreciation for it to play it for 12 years.  I just don't like it.  Not very intense.  But then again, what do I know?  I'm a baseball guy.  I know what your'e saying but I just have a diff opinion.

LOL I went to a Boston Red Sox game last week since I was on vacation.  Fenway was cool, but it was quite annoying to have those men in bright yellow shirts running up and down the aisles shouting "Popcorn"  "Cracker Jacks"  "Ice Cold Lemonade"  "Ballpark Franks"  "Cotton Candy"  "Pizza"  "Diet Coke" during the whole game.  But then again you hear that obnoxious horn during the whole soccer game.  To me, baseball just seems the same every time.  Even home runs aren't that exciting.  You watch the pitch, the guy hits it, then it flies into the stands.  And if you watch the top 10 plays on sportscenter, and you can always bet there will be 5 or 6 "miraculous grabs" in the outfield.  It just gets old to me.  Plus they play over 100 games, so what does 1 game mean anyway?  Again this is just an opinion.  Football is great to watch.  Basketball is good only if it is college.  Golf and tennis are great to play but not to watch.  Ok I got off from my own topic.  Oops.

Either you love the atmosphere or you don't I guess.  Baseball is more fun to play than to watch - like all sports.

Well, soccer is the same everytime.  So is basketball.  So is golf, american football, etc...  Being a student of the game of baseball I can tell you that it is always what you predict.  It's like there are baseball gods or something.  If someone makes an error in the field, you can bet your ass that he will be the same guy who strikes out in the bottom of the 9th.  Or, say someone is batting .100.  That's 1/10 times he gets a hit, which is horrible.  You can count on him breaking out of his slump when the game's on the line.  I don't know why.  There are a thousands of intricate events that you can predict, and even when I'm finally able to predict all of them, which is impossible, it still won't be old to me.  I don't know why.

Well, this is like any sport.  The regular season DOES matter, but it's less exciting to us because no one's season is on the line like it is in the playoffs.  You can only get exciting regular season games when they are hard fought, rivalries, extra-innings, or when post season positioning is on the line.

Take soccer for example.  I didn't really care about the game's these countries have played.  But now that the FIFA world cup is going on I'm more interested because of things like national pride or shame, intensity, the large stage, you just can't get that from games that don't matter.  Pretty much, the playoffs are where it's at.  Tournaments like this spike interest in a sport but it doesn't last forever.

Remember hockey during the olympics?  It was great stuff and I'm not a huge hockey guy (I prefer it over soccer, though).  But, it was only GREAT stuff because of the stakes.  Wait until the MLB playoff to start watching baseball if you must.  I'm a huge baseball guy and I probably only watch 1 full game every couple of weeks.  I just check the scores/highlights on the rest.   :-X

Even more so when it is a queer assed sport.

Can one of you futbol fans explain to me why there is almost no scoring in the game? The goal is 24 fucking feet wide and 8 foot tall. That is bigger than almost any other goal in any sport so how is it that the players suck so bad that they can never score?

Hahah have you ever watched a game? They can't score because it's hard as fuck to get a chance and then the goalies are teleporting gods. I actually think it's a pretty cool sport lol. Baseball on the other hand is the gayest sport known to man.

Farley4Fan

I'll say it now.  There is more action in a game of baseball than in a game of soccer.

If you say action is a bunch of guys running around in a field of grass for 98% of the game, and the other 2% is scoring/goalkeeping, then you won't agree with me.

At any point during a baseball game, 1 player can make a difference with an incredible or a terrible play.  At any point.  There are 27 outs and usually upwards of 60 at bats per game.  Each out, each at bat, something could happen and something will happen.

You know when nothing will happen during soccer and you know when something MIGHT happen.  And then, it probably won't happen.  If there was a button I could push that could make my TV skip all the boring 99% of soccer and only show me the game when a team is about to score then I might enjoy it more.  It's the fact that for the vast majority of the game, there is no chance of anything of importance actually happening.  South Africa and Mexico just drawed today.  1-1.  Yay.  2 hours.  2 goals.  Nobody won.

CurdyMilk

Yeah it's under way.  USA vs. England is a huge game tomorrow!
Back to your point about 98% of the time nothing is happening in soccer...at least they are actually playing for that time period.  In baseball, 98% of the 3 hours they aren't even playing the game.  They are only "playing" for the 1 second that the ball leaves the pitcher's hand and goes into the catcher's mit.  Then, you wait 20 seconds for another pitch for 1 second of potential excitement again.  Or, you could watch the players in the outfield standing there waiting for the ball to fly in their zone for 15 minutes and nothing happens.  I mean, while soccer is low scoring, there is usually some sort of action to watch while baseball has none.
Again, I'm not trying to persuade you into changing your mind because this would just be a pointless argument based upon opinions and interests.  I'm just supporting my sport.
So who does everybody have in the game tomorrow?  I'm thinking a draw...2-2

Spekkio

Baseball could be sped up greatly just by not allowing players to leave the batter's box between pitches not put in play unless they are granted time out. Then umps can actually enforce the rule that is on the books that pitchers must begin their delivery within 12 sec of getting the ball back.

No reason for a player to readjust his gloves, pants, and do a jig between taking pitches EVERY time.

Oh I know that baseball has low "action", it's something like 8 minutes of actual time that the ball is in play.  The excitement comes from knowing that something great could happen in the next second, the next pitch.  In soccer, you have to wait for that potential moment of excitement to happen.  In baseball, you don't have to wait because these moments of potential just keep getting pumped out each pitch.

QuoteOr, you could watch the players in the outfield standing there waiting for the ball to fly in their zone for 15 minutes and nothing happens.  I mean, while soccer is low scoring, there is usually some sort of action to watch while baseball has none.

Well, that depends on what you define as action or what is exciting.  I don't think that seeing guys (almost) randomly running after a ball.  Each time a pitch is thrown, that's action for me.  Each time, something great could happen.

Yeah same here.  Obviously I wouldn't try to change your mind.

Tomorrow, based on what little soccer knowledge I had, I think it will be close (can't really blow out a team in soccer).  It's going to be hard fought and hopefully intense enough to warrant my full attention.  I've seen what the American team CAN do when they beat Spain.  They CAN beat the best.  Not sure about England but I'm sure they're a great team.  It's going to be about who wants it the most and whoever gets a stroke of luck.

U.S.A - 2
England - 1

Yeah... ;D

Gawain

all major sports could use a "patch" to make it more fun, but no chance changing the holy rules...

the great thing about the fifa world cup is that folks lighten up in germany and there are parties everywhere :D

Hahahaha, whoever finds anything interesting in watching 20 dudes run around after a ball...
I have EXACTLY the same thoughts and it's been like that for over 10 years.

I usually add "over-payed spoiled" before "dudes".

And I hate the soccer culture, like it's a sacred sport, ugh. You won't find me watching this month.

EDIT
soccer != football

comicsserg

I don't like football, I never watch it or play it.
