Succubus Dryad Of The Undying Comet

A Field of View higher than 100 degrees. Basically When you're playing on a 4:3 monitor most of the time the FOV sticks around 90 degrees. But when the ratio changes to 16:9, the FOV has to be adjusted so that the image doesn't look weirdly stretched. A 16:9 monitor would be around 120 degrees to look alright, and that's imba.

Also, we're talking just horizontal view, not taking vertical into account. Also, when everyone was playing CT, it didn't seem a problem to be on a 4:3 display. It was pretty well balanced for that ratio.

Now, I'm wondering, if you guys change to 16:9, shouldn't the maps be less... vertical to balance things out?

Widescreen is the future.
I have a 4:3 as my main monitor (CRT) and a widescreen TFT.

Why? Games like Call of Duty, Halo, Rainbow Six, Double Agent, and so on don't 'make maps less vertical' just because one player has a slightly wider horizontal FOV.

I don't think I understand.  The FOV wouldn't be adjusted for anyone, only the size of the image.

There. Exactly the same issue, I suggest the same method is used.

This is how it should be for this game. Vertical awareness is more important than horizontal, especially as a merc, so giving a person who has a better monitor less vertical FOV (over 1/3!) is a horrible idea.

Oh well, I guess you're right. Though I have one question: will I be able to manually tweak my FOV?

Ion.67

If you are then I will kill myself twice. No I won't.

You most likely won't be able to manually tweak your FOV, because then all the vets would tweak there FOV to where it's the highest it can possibly be, and that wouldn't be cool. I wouldn't count on it.

1337 players play with a FOV < 60

Rofl I can only play on the highest aiming sensitivity, a gamecube controller, and with huge 6 inch black bars on the top and bottom of my screen.  I make them out of construction paper.  When I win I can say that the other person sucks because I'm handicapping myself, and when I lose I can say that I only lost because I'm handicapping myself.  How can I ever lose?

Respect.

Almost every console game (or game targeted for consoles) has had a horizontal FOV of around 70 degrees. This includes all halo games and COD4.
Almost every game targeted for PC has had around 90. (UT99 default was 85, half life is 90)
I play quake with 110 FOV. But really, the fov for everything to not look distorted is around 90.
Also, basically every game measures the FOV horizontally, and crops the vertical area.

anyway...

As a long time player of CT and PT, I think the cropping of vertical viewspace isn't that big of a deal. You're usually sweeping your view around anyway, and checking your full sphere of view very often. So, to do this with a few degrees of vertical viewspace removed takes a few milliseconds longer. Big fucking deal.

It seems to me that most arguments here assume you basically stare at the same spot for long periods of time and wait for the enemy to enter your view. If your play style involves heavy use of this, I can't imagine you winning many games.

The amount of situations that would be affected by this and completely change the outcome of a game would be so small as to be well below the statistical noise threshold. There are much more important factors that determine balance. This is basically insignificant.

Just lock it at 90 like basically every other good pc game and assume people have a widescreen monitor. In a few years, this wont be much of an issue as most people will have a widescreen monitor anyway.

AGREE! (and you should have underlined last sentence)
