Need to bother you once more, again about gpu cooler

1) Make sure you use rubbing alcohol to get rid of ALL the old adhesive after removing a heat sink. That's the toughest part and can take a long time.

2) When I replaced my heat sink on an ATI Radeon 9800 pro, I used Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste and it was perfectly fine. But that card had a way to screw the heatsink into the card. If your card has that, then go for the paste. If the only thing holding the heat sink on is that tape (which seems like a poor design, IMO), then you need the tape.

3) You won't short out your CPU with arctic silver 5 unless you are moderately retarded or worse. You take a Q-tip, apply it to the 1/2" or so flat surface, do the same to the heat sink, and screw the heat sink back on. There are plenty of videos of this on youtube, which is what I used as my instructions for doing it.

4) Unless you completely fried the card, the issue you describe doesn't sound like a heatsink one. Heatsink issues typically result in a computer screen going haywire after a short period of operation once the card overheats. Again, going back to why I replaced the heatsink on the Radeon, I would start to get random polygons displayed on 3D games after 20 min of playing, and on some occassions the computer would just reset itself.

If your issue was a heat sink problem, it's probably now a fried video card problem.

Dude he wants tape for memory heatsinks it's 0.5 kg fat so... tape will not hold it I think. For it ar screws.

His GPU heatsink holder, nothing else touch anything on PCB and he wants to use tape to hold memory heatsinks ( black dirty chips around GPU )

heatsinks we are talking about. They will not hold with thermal paste.


About thermal pastes.. there are a lot good pastes AS5 is old good but there are better ones, I use zalman STG-2 and haven't got any problems. Differience in temps between AS5 and ceramique will be probably not even 2-3*C.

This what you show me on photo is Vreg section, very important place and should be cooled good, but there are stronger cards that work without heatsinks on them so my question is your Fans was making airflow around that FETs? Well, with thick tape u should make proper contact on them without problems.

Under high load that FETs can even have 100*C, they are probably designed for 125*C but I'm not sure I don't see model. You can check with finger if heatsink is getting hot ( if u can put finger near them with
that cooling )  :D


BTW. Install GPU-Z and look if you can check VDDC temperature with that program. You probably gonna see more temps that in different programs.

The last picture on Knooger's post, what the hell are those red thingies? They don't look like they help to disperse heat at all, they even look like  decoration what's up with that?

@dread They are heat sinks that work by increasing the surface area of the component, which allows more air to circulate over it inside the case and carry the heat away.

Those little guys shouldn't need their own heatsinks, though.

But they are metalic? Are they hollow inside or something? Do they bend or what? Seems to me like they just take up space or am I missing a picture?

They are metal. They are not hollow and do not bend. They conduct heat away from the component to which they are attached, and that heat is removed by convection via air flow inside your computer case.

HeyBlinkin I have a question for you tell me whats numbers on your Main chip in broken and in new GPU it's G92 or G80? I think I know why you GPU is broken. G80 have some chip thats controlling DVI ( monitor outputs ) and it need heavy cooling.


That small nvidia chip close to DVI is probably dead, if you got G80.

They do Spekkio not always but they do. Especially if you want to turn use your fans on very very low RPM. ;)

They are metal Copper or aluminium but coloured by anodizing process. :D They makes heat capacity and size of the heat dissipation bigger.

Basic physics rules, go back to school :P It's harder to heat bigger object and easier to cool big surfaces.

Simple: Heat is simply the average kinetic energy of the object in question. Heat can be transferred between surfaces; you know this by life experience when you touch a hot stove and get burned.

You also know that objects that are insulated retain their heat longer than ones that aren't. Insulation reduces the heat transfer properties of the material by using a non-conductive surface.

The red heatsinks do the opposite -- they are highly heat conductive and increase the surface area for heat transfer. More surface area means more contact with the cooling medium (air) which means faster heat transfer.

Alright, thank you all.  I've put everything together using the sekisui tape Knooger recommended (seems to hold heatsinks really well), and the arctic ceramique.  Everything went well except for the arctic ceramique bit, because apparently the recommended application instructions are different from those of other thermal pastes.  I may have added a bit too much but I don't think that it produced an appreciable effect.  the 8800gt idles at 43 degrees Celsius and hits a high of 55 degrees on Crysis 2 which is good enough for me.  Once more, thanks for all your help.

Considering the maximum ideal temperature for the 8800GT under load would be around 80-85 degrees celcius, yours is holding up quite nicely, I'd say you did a good job with the paste, the usual application instructions are just guidances so a little more of it than what's told won't mean a big difference most likely a degree or a few higher temperatures if at all. As long as you can keep it as quiet as you want and still keep it under the ideal maximum and you're not planning to seriously overclock it, you're good to go for a long while.
