This is geared toward the people on this site with programming/network experience and knowledge.

Obviously it's not news that Sony's PSN was hacked. However, I haven't found much information about the incident other than the fact that it happened and Sony is working to fix it. It doesn't seem like the hackers were after money, since the highest yield of credit card info lies with Xbox Live, which costs money to everyone who uses it.

My question is this: Was the PSN created with inherently lower security than other console's online networks, or were they just unlucky that the hackers in question targeted them vice Microsoft or Nintendo? Links to sources would also be helpful.

Sony messed up with the PS3 rootkey. Something that had to always be random, was static.
It's likely that there was another thing in their network's security that could have easily been prevented, but I have no idea what that would be. Haven't read any details.

You know what they say about things that are free.  Frvge already touched on the actual details of that.

It seems like it was done to prove a point, and the most likely culprits are obviously the group "anonymous".  Maybe just some former members of the group or something.  Whoever they are, they are total douche bags who probably think they are cool and superior to everyone when, in fact, they are basically useless to society/never touched a girl.

I hear that sony is going to do a total reboot with the PSN at the end of the month, giving them time to up their security and clean up all loose ends out there right now.  Do you think a month's worth of PSN+ and 2 free games (probably flower, pixel junk, 1st party arcade titles) are good enough to repay users?

frvge

Anonymous doesn't do stuff for financial gain. Maybe some sub-members, yeah, that's possible. But then it could be any other hacking group or organized crime too.

What does it say in their terms of agreement about returning stolen money?

Well I am pretty certain that they did manage to steal a lot of money from the Playstation customers, and even after taking a break to harden their security and get prepared for the worst they still need to do something about the cash loss that the customers suffered, so I am wondering what happens to that, does Pstation pay them back or it's in their Terms that if they lose it, they aren't involved?

Money is insured by the CC companies. They will want something back from Sony, but that's for the courts to decide I think.

edit: fixed insecured -> insured.

Then the customers are pretty much fucked, and that means bye bye to Playstation for the shit support.

Moral of the story is to use prepaid cards.

DreadStunLock

Pre-paid cards most of the time turn out to be a lot more expensive.

World of Warcraft pre-paid gamecards are 20£ for 2 months, but you can get 6 months subscription for 40 dollars AND you get the best game support that other games just never had or will have for a long time.

No you noob , you can get pre -paid credit cards... You put the amount of money you want, and
ie. 20 dollars or w/e the amount and presto , no occuring fees and you can cancel at any time Thus they aren't accessing your real bank account.

Ok, but the customer support still sucks you noob.

Apparently Anonymous' own website got hacked and personal information of about 500 members has been stolen and made publicly available (inc. IP address) on their own website.

Pretty ironic, they took down the server I suppose as their website is completely down: http://anonops.net/

Ones from foreign countries can be pretty cool once you realise points from your country cost like 33% more for no fucking reason, though.

Also handy if you want to get region specific points for DLC or whatever that isn't available on your marketplace.
