just a got big ass computer today,  which i intend to do PS with.

Dual quadcore Xeons (i never saw 8 cpus in the task manager before :D)
16gb Ram
1.6 Tb hardisk
24" widescreen Einzo monitor  (highend)
to go with my Cintique 21" monitor  (that 3520x1200 desktop)
8800 gtx  (was tempted to go SLI...but maybe with the next card)

with that on my desk,  and with more time, I will be able to start working more seriously on the merc.

Notes on the merc,   i love all of the suggestions so far.....but I am to far into the process to make radical changes.

OH GOD!

That's all I have to say.

Congratulations on the purchase, Kebab.

hah...thats not something i am going to boast about.

let me put it like this,  i saved at least $3000 by having a shop build it, instead of getting a package deal by Dell or Boxx who specialize in highend machines.

oh...and i am now in love with Eizo monitors....impressive quality.

Daybreak

wait... that says 16gb of ram!

Sweet geebus. I'm still at 516MB.

is it wrong I want to make out with kebab's computer?

i am drooling for the day...which should be in less then 6months when mudbox will no longer have  a ram limit

they have not posted a release date yet,  but Mud 2 will have texture painting and will take advantage of x64.   People are posting rumours of voxels,  which allows you to model based on particle like system that uses volume instead of the standard polygonal system.  Voxels=modelling with volume where you can make unlimited extrusions without effecting mesh density.  The polygonal system works like a skin,  where vert placement is crucial because it effects mesh density, and edge flow,  and introduces issues when making extrusions, bevels, holes, etc etc.

The one reason  Z feels faster is for that very reason,  its a 32bit app that can use x64 advantages.  But generally speaking,  they both have pretty much the same poly limits so you  have to be clever about how you manage the memory.  Mud can handle a 6mill mesh with some slowdown,  but the file itself can have 40+ mill polygons although not all displayable.

Kebab, you know there is such a thing as too much RAM, right?

Yeah, but when you work on high polygon models such as the spy and merc, you REALLY need the PC to run smooth, otherways making models becomes a nightmare.

There is actually, but there are mobos that don't have a limit - my mobo can handle up to 3 Gigs of ram, though i can pack 8 Gigs on it :/

hughie21

What I mean is that there must be a point where you don't feel an upgrade of RAM.
