It's a mod of the unreal engine but, because they can't afford the huge $ licence fee required to make PS standalone, you'll have to purchase UT3 then install the game. Thats the way it's always been.

Varies for different games, for example max payne mods when u click the MP Icon, it asks if you want to play this or that. Not sure how ut3 mods work. With crysis you have to actually lauch the game, then select the mod in game. it all varies tbh. Im sure the awesomeness of lennard n mulle will sort something out.
