General / Off-Topic / So I felt the urge to post...
November 02, 2011, 12:41:28 AM
...but I don't know why.

I had a good day but I'm feeling mighty cynical...  it would be stupid to tell you about it.

I'm not emo... but everything kind of has a downside today.

I have the munchies... but no food.

Just ate a reeses peanut butter cup... but I already forgot what it tasted like.

I aced my test in class today... but I hate that class.

I feel somewhat happy... but I guess I could be happier.

This chick and I want to BOAN... but she has a boyfriend she is stuck with.

This other chick wants to BOAN... but she only looks good drowning in makeup and/or if I'm drunk as fuck.

I like this show I'm watching... but I saw the ending coming from a mile away.

My friends and I chilled and had a good time today... but it ended on a weird serious note.

This isn't really going anywhere... but I'm sure it will end.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780504/

I've become quite a big Nicolas Winding Refn fan recently (Bronson and Valhalla Rising in particular, both of which I also recommend), and I was super excited to hear he was getting a wide-release movie that could get the mainstream hearing about him.

I took a girl to go see it last night and our plans to make out the entire time were almost completely foiled by this masterpiece of a film.  The opening scene is intriguing and sets the stage for the rest of the movie.  The movie follows a stunt driver, whose name you never learn, as he provides his driving services like a mercenary for a predetermined amount of time.  The business of the people who hire him does not concern him until he gets caught in the middle of it.  It has a superb story that is a touch cliche but has enough to make it unique and interesting.  Action scenes were insanely good, imo.  Acting was great.  Soundtrack is catchy.  Comic relief is there in the perfect spots.  It's believable (something that Hollywood lacks more often than not these days).  It has an awesome style that if I had to describe I would say: techno-rogue-badass.

As for opinions other than mine, it's getting stellar reviews all across the board.  A 90 something on rotten tomatoes.  An average of 8.8 on IMDB which is almost unheard of.  IGN gave it a 5/5 - something they haven't done since Inception and I think District 9 before that.

So go see it and support it.  Tell your friends.  It has some marketing but only a few non-convincing commercials.

General / Off-Topic / Another lazy ubi effort...

http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/puzzle/tom-clancys-splinter-cell-classic-trilogy-hd/review.html?tag=gumballs%3Bimg%3B3

Looks like there are some big framerate issues.  For games that are a decade old.  Is this really acceptable when you consider that probably half of the country's home computers can run all of these games pretty well?

What sucks is this probably will sell badly and then ubi will think it's because of the old-style gameplay and not  because it's just a lazy port with no multiplayer/no real reason to buy it.  It better be 5 dollars.

I usually trust gamespot's opinion on splinter cell games and games in general.  They're the only site I visit often whose review scores of splinter cell went down after CT.

General / Off-Topic / Fuck our Justice System
July 05, 2011, 09:57:13 PM
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43636855/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/

Just hours after the 4th of July ends, just hours after the peak of our patriotism, hours after the fireworks and bombs finally end, a bomshell is dropped on our hearts and minds.

I know all about the OJ case, but I wasn't alive for it so it never hit me as hard as this one.  This one destroyed any sense of faith I had remaining in our justice system - there wasn't that much left - less than half a day after I was screaming "USA" in the streets downtown.

To find her "not guilty" of even child abuse (she didn't report her own daughter missing for 31 days, and was spotted partying after the report was finally filed) is absurd.  They found her guilty of lying to investigators, but apparently lying to investigators isn't enough to prove that she's a liar.

So, yeah, patriotism is shunted at least for another 364 days.  We may have a better system than most countries but in the end the good ole USA is made out of the same humans as the rest of the world's countries.  I celebrated our independence, and then laughed in its face, all in a matter of hours.  I'm a little emotional to say the least.

What kind of country is this where a mom can get away with killing her daughter but can't get away with lying to investigators?

Stunned.  It may only hit me this hard because it was so unexpected.  All reports told me that she was screwed from every way possible, like a fucking 14 person gang bang.  She comes out a virgin.

I'm so happy this is being made.  I had to sell my PSP along with one of my favorite games of all time (Peace Walker), and I've never gotten the chance to play Snake Eater or MGS2.  I've always heard Snake Eater is fantastic and the premise sounds very cool - kind of akin to Peace Walker.  MGS2 I've heard is the weaker game in the series but I'd like to play it.

But for those who have not yet heard, they are making a 3 game collection of the game's I've already mentioned for PS3 and 360 - not sure about PC.  Now hopefully you guys that have not yet played Peace Walker can experience what I think is one of the greatest stealth games ever.  The stealth is a bit more shallow than say Splinter Cell, but the game is extremely deep on the whole (pun intended, the game is so good I'd let it violate me).  Almost like an RPG stealth game.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/117/1177157p1.html - here's some footage of an extremely shitty player but it's running on PS3

The coop is really good but I never got to play it because you needed people with PSP's (who has a PSP anyway?) and the game to play it locally.  Now we can use the good ole internet (what a concept!) to hook up with buddies for a cooperative romp throughout central America.  They haven't confirmed online coop yet but it's safe to assume that it's there for Peace Walker.

So, yeah.  The best game no one except me played, the best game that everyone except me played, and not the best game that everyone except me played.  In one package, that's pretty attractive.

I thought we may never.

I thought we may have and never knew.

I THOUGHT BUT IT DOESNT MATTER CUZ OSAMA BIN LADEN HAS BEEN KILLED BY US FORCES IN AFGHANISTAN BABY

It's a happy day, silver tuna tonight.

It may be a more symbolic thing than crippling to Al Qaeda as they have much more active leaders in their group today, but this is great news.  Think of all the 9/11 victims and their families that will feel this.  Obviously it won't bring back their loved ones but I'm sure that knowing that the mastermind behind the biggest terrorist attack in U.S. history, that took the lives of their friends and family, brings satisfaction.  The relief is felt by all Americans, be sure of that.

General / Off-Topic / Crysis 2 (demo out)
January 26, 2011, 04:51:51 AM
The demo is only for the 360.  I played it, loved the original 2 games, and I have to say that I'm a bit dissapointed.  I expected it to be at least a little shitty on xbox, but it exceeded my shitxpectations.  Controls unresponsive, clunky, laggy, eh...

What sucks is that all my real friends who I play xbox with all the time are like "ahmahgawwd the grafix sooo good I'm buying it!"  I would never buy this game for xbox unless all my friends get it, and I'm currently convincing them how shitty it is 1 friend at a time.

The visuals are nice on the xbox and I'm surprised they "pulled this off".  I only quote that because I'm not sure if they actually did "pull this off".  The visuals may very well be the reason the controls are so responsive because the poor console can't really handle it all without a delay.  Not to mention, the game froze my xbox twice and "matchmaking" is slow.

Over simplified, COD perks/classes/killstreaks have all been injected for no reason.

Cool map though.  Nice design with nice interaction.

I'll hold off on even thinking about buying it.  And if I do think about it, it will be for PC where the controls will be responsive and not laggy as fuck.

So no surprise here I guess.

General / Off-Topic / BCS National Championship Game
January 09, 2011, 11:37:42 AM
I know the whole system is a sham.  The lack of a playoff is proof-positive that it is all just a money grabbing machine hell bent on nothing but faking tradition and raking it in.

HOWEVER (!)

The best 2 teams ARE playing for the national championship in college football (Yes, the real kind of football), and one of those teams just happens to be my Oregon Ducks who I have loved, supported, and cried with even before my umbilical cord was cut (so, since I was about 3).

I know at least Curdy follows football (and I am sorry about Wisky, but your loss in the Rose may help a playoff system come to be), and I am wondering who else is a fan.

It's a dream come true to see the Ducks have such success.  This video is amazing ---

General / Off-Topic / Can't open .pak file
January 07, 2011, 08:07:04 AM
I just bought Men of War off of Steam.  My friend told me it's a fun RTS and it looked like it was from the vids I saw.  All is going well until I launch the game.  The "Men of WAR" title screen comes up but then a little window appears and tells me "Can't open pak"...  It never successfully launches.

More info - The window's title is "Exception" and it says

Cannot open pak. (resource/entity/e1.pak(eiostream.cpp,155)

---

main

I have reinstalled it and I get the same message.

I figured that I would need software that could read this type of file (I've never even heard of it) and googling around hasn't really helped too much.  I found that this type of file usually has something to with registry, but I don't see why I would have a problem with that.

The one Russian-made game I ever buy this happens.  I blame Dread.

I figured that this is the most programming/computer apps/gaming savvy group of people I know (<3)

Help would be much appreciated and a prize may be in order.  ;D

Use the search function and search for poop.  I have said it the most times, and I'm pretty proud.

I win with the most times someone has said poop.  I love how those quotes are taken out of context.  My personal favorite was

Quoterealism=poop

suction cup ftw

post some more funny quotes with funny keywords taken from this site's search

General / Off-Topic / Limbo
July 22, 2010, 08:27:51 AM
Sorry to those w/o an xbox but I don't think Limbo is coming to PC.

At this moment, at least, it's only on XBLA.

I bought it and beat it in one day.  Though that may sound bad, it was actually one of the most atmospheric and addictive games I've ever played.  I literally could not put the controller down because I was so eager to see what the next puzzle/trap/environment would be.

It's undoubtedly short but undoubtedly sweet.  15 bucks I would normally say is too expensive for a game that will only last you 5 hours and maybe 3 more hours down the road in a 2nd playthrough.  Normally I would say that, but I loved every minute I spent with this gem.

This game doesn't have much of a story to speak of, but there was definitely some symbolism to give you an idea of what actually happened.  It's not about the story, however, it's about solving the clever puzzles, enjoying the artistic environments, and adventuring through this strange little world.  You can't help but squirm when a buzz saw repeatedly grinds the Limbo Boy into several pieces or when a giant spider stabs him with a giant leg.

The game ends very abrubtly, and it's very fitting when you finally figure out what happened to the boy, but it left me wanting more.

Regardless, a 9.9/10

Okay, a 10

General / Off-Topic / Toy Story 3 (spoiler free)
June 21, 2010, 08:24:57 AM
This was probably the most emotional I've ever been towards a movie, and it was animated toys who did it to me.

If you haven't seen it then I definitely suggest that you do.

The reason that I was so emotional was that I grew up with these movies.  I was 3 or 4 when the first one came out.  7 or 8 when the second one hit.  And now I'm going to college next fall and in Toy Story  3, Andy is "all grown up" (like me) and is heading off to college.  This is going to sound weird but I grew up with Andy (the owner of the toys for those who don't know).

Andy is going off to college and the movie, yet again, is about the "mortality of a toy".  This mortality of a toy is really just a symbol of growing up and losing innocence.  This really hit me pretty hard.  I can feel every message this movie is trying to convey because I'm going through it right now.

I cried watching that movie and I'm still tearing up from time even following the movie.  It was the first time since I was 11 that I cried during a movie.  That other movie was Radio and I mainly cried because I felt bad for Cuba Gooding Jr's character.

But this movie I actually cried because the theme was so realistic and relevant to my life.  It made me realize how much you give up when you grow up.  It's sad.  I've always wanted to grow up and drive a car, go to college, get a cool job like a race car driver or an astronaut, and all that stuff you dream of when you're a kid, but the best part is dreaming about it.  Actually living as an adult is probably more of a drag than being a kid where anything is possible despite all the perks that come with age.

It's deep stuff.  It's amazing how Pixar can make you feel a certain way by personifying toys and embedding real life messages into their story.  I cried watching an animated movie about toys that come to life.  How crazy is that?  It's truly modern genius.

I saw a guy I know who is one of the "hardcore" types.  We both play drums but he's in a "metal" garage band.  You know.  We were both walking out of the theater with our respective families wiping our respective eyes.  It was beautiful.  Underneath all the "hardcore" we are all softies and wish we could go back to being children again.

I plan to show my kids in 2 or 3 decades all the movies in intervals.  Toy Story 1 when they are younger than 5, Toy Story 2 when they are younger than 10, and Toy Story 3 when they are going off to college like myself and dealing with the hardships of growing up and letting go.  It has just taught me so much.  It's amazing.  Hopefully in doing this I'll be able to relive the golden days of limitless possibility along with my kids.

This movie reminds you that you never actually grow up, you just get older.  No one is an adult, we are all just grown up children.  (ha, we are all just a children  lol)...

I'm really starting to wish that we could be born old and gradually get younger with age so we could appreciate our imagination and innocence while we have it.

Lol I keep editing this post because I keep thinking of things to add to it.  I'm flooded with emotion.  It's awesome.   :D
