Title: Co-creating a new theme, part 1
Post by: frvge on June 13, 2011, 01:32:16 AM
Hi all,

We're going to get rid of this standard theme ASAP, but we could use some input from you.
So... what should a PS forum look like? Black? Dark? Green? Fishnets in the backgrounds, or an image of a Spy and a Merc, or just a calm color? Anything is possible, but for us to make a new theme we'd like to get the best of the best ideas, blend those, and put it all together to form a kick-ass forum that's ready for the eventual release of PS (yeah, yeah, we know).

So post your comments and preferably sketches as replies :-)

well ultimately I think it needs a PS feel to it.. with black .. and the sections names in green font.. with a spy and or merc at the top left n right corner.. with of course the logo in the centre of how it was.

No it doesn't, it can be whatever the hell it can be, color can even include pink if it's used correctly. And the logo position doesn't have to be that either.

Gonna have to pump my photoshop for tommorow ^_^

Could you swap the "Last Post" and "Topic" in the overview, it's very confusing compared to the old forum and I actually liked it over all other forums I've been on.

IMO forums should be a mix of gray, black and some light gray but not white.
It should have simple shapes ( like old forum ) and some logo (maybe a new logo?) at the top as button for returning to main website.
Maybe add  little last twitter posts below forums.

Here is an old Lobby Concept (and hopefully close to what will finally be used.) I recommend using this as a reference for the forum theme.

I would like the old theme back, the old one we used yesterday. I started to get attached to it and wouldn't want to see it gone for good. I don't like dark forum backgrounds as it makes reading unpleasent at night time.

I second this statement. While multiple themes (including a remake of the Old one) would be great! I think that something that looks much like the picture above would be for the best as a default.

Plus, that Lobby concept looks sexy.

This place looks like a weight-watchers website.

Fishnets would make it look like a river monsters fansite.

Keep it dark with a black background and use teal and green to highlight the website.  They seem to be the PS logo colors so they obviously should fit into the color theme somewhere.  Make the actual posting area a light grey.

Basically old style, only darkened, maybe colours close to Twilight/Zenburn (code-style)?

?

I think using a "dark" theme would be good. However i would also add the colors of the spy and the merc (green and yellow/orange) into it somehow. Then it would be perfect.... i guess

Why change something that already looked awesome? If you want to make a new theme then Please leave a button to choose between the new and the old theme.

Thank you.

Because the old forum was completely not in the PS style? You just got accustomed to it.

That's correct.  I basically made you a mod with just my nomination.  They just did the "voting" thing as a formality.  On the inside, though, they knew that whatever I said was going to be the decision.  The rest of the "decision making process" was just a facade.  So everyone, go ahead and throw in your two-cents but realize they are only listening to you to make it seem like I'm not the one who is completely in charge of everything.

Love your motto btw cronk

As promised, second design will come in tommorow, got a bit of a cold, so I will give you all the time to bash me of how horrible this looks and yada yada drama.

The menu of 6 different categories of the forum should have a circular spin and the main selection should be on the middle and at the front.

New posts in a section would be highlighted by a much version of the spies goggles glowing.

The Home button is the way it would look when you mouse over.

Clicking on the selected button like the forum category or the options, would make the button flash for couple of seconds and then redirect you.

The connecting looking lines with a dot next to the categories would flash white when the category is moused over.

I always thought that the forum should have a return to the main Project Stealth website button.

New option buttons on the top seem fit somehow to me.

Uh, we're looking for a theme. Not a hard-to-click spinning thing.

Take the main page of the forum as an example: how are the threads lined out etc. Should be pretty straight forward.

So what do you need Tigaer then for? That stuff even for a beginner should be doable :| You confused me :(
Title: Re: Co-creating a new theme, part 1
Post by: NeoSuperior on June 14, 2011, 01:12:03 AM
The old one was just "black&white" but it didn't feel like SvM at all. The one lennard showed was better because it was darker overall, however that design was too... monotonous
But the "standart theme" we got now is something we should get rid off as soon as possible.

as i said... something with black (or dark grey), orange and green

so we got
-black for "stealth gameplay"
-green for the spies
-orange for the mercs

so something like what zed posted (colorwise).

if the colors are somehow implemented, then it will probably look nice.

But to be honest... i think a design like it is on the mainpage would be nice too.

You are coming up with a theme (colors, background image, icon images etc), not redesigning the interface.

Old one has to be upgraded in a similar way if we were to make a new one. I would await a few sketches, then host a poll off all designs including an option to "upgrade the old theme"

@Dread: I do like your Out-of-the-box forum interface, it is very PSish, although questionable if it's easy in use.

@frvge: Do you have a screenshot of the old forum, a full page with header and footer?

You are free to do what you want, but it HAS to remain a standard forum layout, just styled.

You can still use the old theme, just change to the Musiconica theme (which is the old Theme) It isn't 100 percent compatible right now, but it is still 'usable.' I'm using it right now. Just a heads up, the only way to reply as far as I can see is to quote a post.

it's a major version upgrade. That's all you should know. If you want to know the technical details, visit the SMF site yourself.

I couldn't get my head around the changelog. Mostly because I don't like reading straight up .txt documents.

What I can gather though is that the upgrade includes many things about security and compatibility. 1.x to 2.x doesn't change a lot of things visually (though I'm liking my account being in the upper left hand corner. Picture and all), but it allows for further modification than 1.x. It's like going from Vista to Windows 7. Sure there were some new fancy features, but mostly it was just optimizing the OS and other such things that you don't actually see firsthand.

Here's a link to the changelogs for 2.0 (http://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_2-0_changelog.txt) (be warned, it's a .txt document filled with a boatload of text that may only be relevant if you know a bit about the intricacies of their forums and associated problems/bugs)

Here's a Features List (http://www.simplemachines.org/about/smf/features.php) for SMF Forums.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/ has a plethora of mods and themes that people have made. Make sure to look near the bottom of each of those pages to find the link to those that are compatible with SMF 2.0.

The themes section might be a good place as reference for people to go that don't know where to start with this whole "Sketch out a theme" idea. Note that while the colors are a big part of the overall theme (in my eyes), images such as: Logo, No New Replies, and New Replies can be replaced with more PS related things. On top of background image and whatnot. Also, unless I'm mistaken, small layout changes can be made, though the layout is already easy to navigate so it's unlikely that there will be any change needed in that area.

http://www.jpr62.com/demos/ another reference site that actually shows off what some themes look like implemented. Drop down box at the top has the list of themes it can show.

aaaand that's all I've looked at thus far.

One thing I will say thank you for, is the new rating system of every person, I know for the fact I will get a smite up to 100 :) But hey, at least we will know now who is more bullshit, and who is not.
Title: Re: Co-creating a new theme, part 1
Post by: Cronky on June 16, 2011, 01:21:53 AM
My question is whether there is an actual repercussion to having a certain amount of smite or not.
Title: Re: Co-creating a new theme, part 1
Post by: DreadStunLock on June 16, 2011, 01:28:18 AM
To be honest, I think there should be a smite or applaud on the posts, rather than on the profile, if you post something good, you have a button just below to rate the post and that adds up to your profile too.

It does make more sense to applaud/smite specific posts instead of the profile.  But if you smite someone's post because you disagree with their opinion, they shouldn't get their reputation penalized.  Maybe like/dislike and applaud/smite could be separate features?
Title: Re: Co-creating a new theme, part 1
Post by: DreadStunLock on June 16, 2011, 02:10:43 AM
Absolutely, forcing someone to give a reason for an applaud or a smite should be enforced. And only allow to Smite someones post if it's close to be a generic Agent/My 'typical' type of a post or applaud if it's a Cronk/Farley type of a post :p
Title: Re: Co-creating a new theme, part 1
Post by: Zedblade on June 16, 2011, 02:57:48 AM
Forcing people to give a reason would make the whole ordeal of rating someone laborious, resulting in hardly anyone ever actually using it. However if it matter so much to you maybe there can be a area in your control panel that lists the users that have smited/applauded you and if you are so inclined could try to contact them and get them to take it back. If that feature is possible.

Adding a like and not like to separate posts is just redundant.

As for what it does overall, obviously we need to setup some sort of leveling system with PS related names. (Agent, Informant and whatever else.) That wouldn't just be a indication on uberness, but also depending on you 'level' would grant you first looks at new maps/betas and what not.

Severely disrupting the forums will get you a server-wide IP ban. Seeing as this will probably also be the Master Server... not a good idea.

Well, I could balance it out.  12 smites a day against the opposing team, and 12 applaud's a day directly toward frvge so that I don't get banned.  Problem solved?  Frvge, well all know you're a sucker for bribes.   :-X

Seems to me like most people don't have an easy way to make a theme. Like a test area. I could imagine up a theme like a BEAST, but I don't have a way to show it off.

Like that, but with the ability to create your own themes using your own colors/pictures.

PSHHHH. You think I have Photoshop installed all willy nilly?? I do... but that's not the point! :P

What I mean is that there is no "Easy" way to make a pretend template. Sure, popping open photoshop isn't as tough as say... setting up your own private forum to test layout ideas, but it's still not as simple. I'm not saying that you NEED to go make something like that, but that's my reasoning as to why nobody has contributed.

Everyone already said they wanted also: (parenthesis are what I think they mean)

-A Spy Theme (Darker)
-A Merc Theme (Dirtier)
and
-The Old theme v2.0 (Optimized, with action missiles)

I'm a sucker for the color green. So I'm liking the colors at least so far.

It's be cool if on the first screen you could have the spy and merc on the border of the forum. With their backs to the edges of the actual forum content.

On the 2nd one... You should have the Merc go from no vision to MT vision when there are no new messages and then new replies. You know... because new messages mean that the topic is in motion... teehee  :-[

Your a moron, because you think it's easy, creating a good theme isn't just a fucking pop and tad there, if you think it's that easy, get the hell on your shitty AutoCAD and make me a theme, till then shut up and stop putting pressure on like you think you know everything about web designs.

Well as Goodkebab told you when you created a thread in Join Us section, ideas are dime a dozen, they need someone who can implement it, if it's so simplistic do it. Cause so far I haven't seen a single attempt from you to even try.

You do understand this whole thread is about ideas right? And if by "implement" you mean "draw it out in photoshop", then he already explained that he doesn't know how to use it (to the extent in which he could express his idea in the way he saw it). He did what he could, and while it may not be what was recommended, it's still more than most people on here have contributed (me included).

(You ever type something out then feel like you originally heard it from your mom... when you were like 6?)

Yes, but as that maybe, saying make it "Simple" (How simple? No specification) Make it black and green and gray. (Make 1 block on the right green, the other block on the middle gray, the block on the left black?)

He needs to be way more specific, otherwise people will just create themes based on what he said, and the whole theory on fences being unwelcome? Maybe I should make the whole forum pink, and put some naked dudes with developers cut outs saying, "we give free frag dildos for your luxury"? And tazing is for naughty people, "I prefer sleep gas"?
Title: Re: Co-creating a new theme, part 1
Post by: Cronky on July 05, 2011, 09:06:02 AM
I never said that his idea was simple to read, or even complete, only that he has contributed more than most.

From what I gathered he wants:

-The PS logo at the top to include the spy and the merc at opposite sides. (Think of it like the old forum with the "Project Stealth" logo at the top, combined with your first picture's background image)

-Darker background (an example would be something like... if you go to: http://www.jpr62.com/demos/ and look at the first template labeled "Black Rain".)

-Public discussion section to be highlighted green (like the spy's goggles)

-Presentation section to be highlighted orange (like... Merc visor orange)

Other than those there is still indeed a lot of stuff missing, but he apparently wanted to hit the BIG things. It being simple, I'm guessing, is because he didn't try to do something like have a custom picture as the background (such as your fence picture), or tweaking the opacity of the forum like both your ideas did to show off the background picture. It's essentially the template I told you to go to above with some slight tweaks.

I quite like that. I want that now.

It's tough for me to say that I think the Spy and Merc could be spread out to the sides of the Project Stealth logo so that you could bring down the top a bit. It would ruin what you did with the whole sun deal, but my first reaction was that it was a little top heavy.

Without doing that it's still fantastic, and much better than what I expected anyone to make.

I really like that theme too. It's as i would want it, with left side green, and right side yellow/orange.

However the "1st Person shooter vs 3rd Person action" sounds, as if there would be nothing like "stealth" in this game.

So aside from that "game of the year 2012" is quite fitting :D

The 2nd picture (that I either missed, or just got added) is even better. While I could assume the lines were meant more to be a joke than anything, it definitely looks a bit better with the login area simply being shifted to a new spot.

I have to wonder how much of that theme is actually possible. I know quite a bit, if not all, should be, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a limitation with layout designs that you'd only know by actually trying to make it.

That's the community section. I got that done for the features that I want to launch when the game launches, but in the meantime I've learned a lot of new stuff, so it'll probably get redone.

I think this layout is a good start. I won't be here in the next few weeks, but after that I think I can implement it in a few weekends.

Its a capital lambda, yes. Half-life uses the lower-case Greek letter. Equals the sign of masculinity, as seen in obelisks and the 'male' sign and mimics the rough shape of... you guessed it... a penis. Mercs are bad-ass males.

Spies should get a V in that case (obvious The Da Vinci Code reference is obvious).

Anyway, I like Tigaers design, it also has a touch of Battlefield Bad Company 2 interface, which I like. But somehow, it doesn't fit with the logo. Maybe make the logo more blueish, or make the blue more greenish/gray - but it could be the placeholder background ruining it.

I also like STON3's layout better, usability-wise: http://www.imagebam.com/image/d55205145558209

I agree, I like the suggested changes of swapping positions of the log in and navigation bar. I'll definitely put that to use in the final version. Any other changes you guys see? I might try a few things to make navigation easier and all that, and have a little fun with some things.

The 'new post' icon is the icon for the mercenary team (AKA my avatar for almost the last year), the spy version of the layout will be the spies logo, which I'll show the next time I post the design. Frvge is right, it's based off the greek alphabet, so it'll most likely stay unless I come up with something else in the future. They were both just placeholder logos, but they grew on me over the months I spent designing the UI system, so I'm not looking into redoing them anytime soon.

Spy version. I really wanted to use the old concept art images kebab did for the characters just as a sort of 'history of PS' theme, so I put them to use. The background images will be static, just in case anybody was wondering. The 'Log In' and 'Unread Posts' pop up bars would only be visible when the buttons are moused over.

If anybody wants to grab the background images I'll be using and use them as their wallpaper, I got you covered. ;)

I like the changes tigaer :D. I still think the 'log in' and 'unread posts' buttons look really clunky though, despite the mouse over issue. The idea with using a 'go' button like I did instead of the blue square is that logging in becomes self explanatory, so it removes the need for the clutter of having 'log in' appear. The issue with the unread posts button is that it sticks out the side of the forum, I think it'd be better if you just added a hyperlinked 'Unread Posts' bar like I did in the forum header. You could still keep it the same though, perhaps when you mouse over it should appear in a pop-up box like if you were to mouse over a hyperlink on webpage, which would follow your mouse while you had your mouse on the button. That way it doesn't intrude on the design, and feels more usable.

EDIT: Also on mobile devices I don't imagine 'mouse over' really works, so I still see the changes I made to log in/unread posts as better looking :P

Off Topic, but I'd like to mention how much I like the concept Merc. It's more casual than the current Merc. It would be sweet if at one point we had the option to switch the Merc skin in-game and use one more resembling that.
Title: Re: Co-creating a new theme, part 1

The mercenary itself, or the mercenaries changed hue and the background?
Title: Re: Co-creating a new theme, part 1
Post by: Cronky on August 18, 2011, 10:25:14 PM
The Mercenary himself. While I like the Merc that's been made, it'd be sweet to have a 2nd skin more akin to the concept Merc.

I don't know if it's the short sleeved T-shirt, the clutterless look, or the unintended idea that covering their face up makes killing them seem like a more acceptable choice*.

You might want to pick one of the later concept-art, the "trident" goggles could be a legal issue hence why it was changed later on. Or Photoshop it away (best option IMO), then it's alright :)

whats fucked up is that Project stealth used it way before convictions even had something like that ie.

If you seriously think there can be a legal issue on that spy and the one Conviction you are heavily mistaken, if I was dick enough, I could overdraw the picture like the one agent linked me, photoshop copy and paste his goggle, add a metal texture overlay, and there is your legal issue is gone.

I think we should continue that newly locked Agent thread here.  Probably against all the rules, but hey, I didn't read them.

Then again, it has gotten quite old to bash Agent.  Out of style, even.  Bashing Agent is sooo 1.5 years ago, but hating on me is in.  Go!

Yes +1 boredom/Karma/whatever you like, since +1 month waiting is only for the written form of "ß" It's EXCLUSIVE FOR THAT WORD. And doing the same rule for more than 1 word is just boring. Hmmm writing this is boring too just as always...

btw, i am so bored.......

These blue lines under Home, help, search... etc. looks kinda bad, you should delete that karma bullshit - it's useless and I see people are giving bad/good karma for no reason.

I like the progress!

Is there going to be an addition of a box behind... all the other boxes... It looks a tiny bit weird with everything all split up. Might be that padding issue you've got listed, but that's the biggest problem I have with it right now. Other little problem that I'm sure you know about is that either the icons need to change color in replies, or there should be a box behind them so you can see them better.

I'll link pictures down below...

(Weird spacing example) Red lines indicate max weirdness
(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx210/MTCronky/th_PSbackbox2.jpg) (http://s756.photobucket.com/albums/xx210/MTCronky/?action=view&current=PSbackbox2.jpg)

(Icons that are harder to see) Red lines are again weird lines so you know where to look
(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx210/MTCronky/th_Backbox3.jpg) (http://s756.photobucket.com/albums/xx210/MTCronky/?action=view&current=Backbox3.jpg)

Sidenote: Red is a lot easier to read with this color scheme. :P

Also, is there plans for the Merc background/Icons also? Perhaps also, for those like Venomous, a "classic" forum layout?

Yea, you could add there twitter, moddb and other PS related websites which should be interesing for community like some logos as buttons.
And what about some server browser trought website or so? Where/how will be placed PS masterserver?
Title: Re: Co-creating a new theme, part 1
Post by: frvge on December 29, 2011, 11:54:02 AM
Twitter will go as tigaer's design showed. We can possibly do some more logos at the bottom, yes.

Master server and server stats will be somewhere else. Presumably on the community portal, but I'll probably redo that anyway. Same for the current PS site (only technically, layout stays roughly the same).

the image for "no new post" on forum-home is:    (http://community.projectstealthgame.com/forums/Themes/Project%20Stealth%201/images/off.png)    which is not explained right.

The "explanation key" beneath it is    (http://community.projectstealthgame.com/forums/Themes/Project%20Stealth%201/images/new_none.png)

Can you fix this?

What do you mean with "is not explained right"? Do you mean that it doesn't really convey the message of "new post"? If so, that's true, but gets clear fast enough after you use it .
