Obviously there are crooked cops but they don't represent the police as a whole.  Here in Oregon, I personally know police that are "crooked" towards the opposite end of the spectrum and let a ton of weed related shit slide completely.  The almost-mythical cops that shoot your pets for smoking weed are balanced out  by the ones that don't really give a damn where I come from.

That seemed like an appropriate, yet unsavory, reaction the police had in that video based on the context of what they made the situation to be. It might sound horrible to say that, but the police were under the assumption something big was happening in there, thus the RAID.  At the start of that video though they make it sound like 2 cops just casually walked in and told him to put his hands up while the guy inside the house went, "Oh, hi there, can I put my dog in his kennel?". I'm sure that wasn't the case. Under the assumption that you may be faced with people that are armed inside, shooting first doesn't seem like THAT big of a shock. Shooting a dog, that you have no history knowing the behavior or health of, is a reaction I'd almost expect. I like dogs, but if one looks like it's going to bite me on the street I will do the appropriate action in the situation to avoid that.

In retrospect it seems dumb because there were no drugs to be found, but that's exactly why the guy got a good chunk of money.

Just because this story got some attention doesn't mean that cops on a whole are bad though. Each cop is subjected to their own personal ideology on what is the appropriate use of their power and how much is needed in a situation. They have laws to abide by, and training to attune them to situations they might face, but each individual cop in any situation uses their own personal judgement to get to the conclusion that you actually see.*

*Assumptions based on 0 personal experience of how cops are supposed to do their job ;)

Thankyou Tidenburg and, for that matter, youtube for showing all of us that 00.0000001% of times this actually happens.  I have heard of this story, and I don't know why people want to take it as the normal thing.  If it were a normal situation, it wouldn't have made the news - if anything, this video shows that it isn't a normal occurrence.  People see this shit overseas and think that must be how it is in the states all the time.  Likewise, Americans see various videos of foreign countries and do the same. 

Like Cronky said, obviously this was a mistake on the part of the investigators - they were obviously misinformed of the situation inside.  There's a reason he got a big settlement out of it.  I'm gonna echo Cronky again here and say that each cop uses his/her firearm at his/her own discretion.  You aren't just going to get you and your dog shot for smoking in your home or for being involved in a riot like Dread and Jordan seem to believe.

I see swat teams downtown all the time busting actual meth labs.  I see cops that don't care about small amounts of weed and casual smoking.  I see an occasional mistake on the part of the cops and foreigners who take it as common procedure.
