Title: Microphones in lobbies
Post by: AgentX_003 on December 25, 2009, 07:43:12 PM
Ok  I was just thinking about this, that there needs to be a push to talk key for voice But on Top of that

No one should be able to permanantly mute everyones voice chat, Because I cant count how many times now that Majority of lobbies I join , consist of Irrational people Ie. Professionul  and his pals decide to mute the microphones , For what god forsaken reason ,and its so damn annoying, so I kinda would like Voice chat forced..... for Everyone who mutes the voice chat so they can use team speak it makes me wanna go on a rampage and stab.

Thing is isn't voice chat on by default?
And Agent, if you don't like other people's rules just host your own games.

There isn't going to be voice chat for the first release? Maybe I'm just a newb, but if not, each and every person involved in that decision can get anal raped by a dinosaur.

Or they could simply get Xfire and enjoy good quality chat.

Agent please stop making these posts/threads about the voice chat muting, some people don't want to hear your or anyone elses voices, it is NOT a requirement to play the game, and to play it well. You'll get your ass kicked with or without voice chat anyway. So since it's already been mentioned, it is not a priority, there's a big list of stuff that goes over the voice chat in priority.

i'm all for strongly enforcing good rules.
people are generally stupid and can destroy a game pretty quickly with custom rules making newcomers join the dark side  ;D

now with that said, having to hear agentx is NOT a good rule.

Option for player mute. Is it really so hard to comprehend an easy solution? You select their name and hit mute. Not hard.

So, kinda back on topic.

Also I forget if it was already answered, but is PS going to have some way to make the in-game voice chat the only thing you can use?

xFire, Steam, hell you could blast open some MSN Messenger and get voice chatting ability, the possibilities are near infinite. Will there though be something that (Lightest use possible) "Forces" you to use the PS Voice Chat system?

If so, HOW? Sounds interesting.

If not, HOW... are you going to make Spy Traps and Spy Bullets have that extra cool feature of hearing in on the opposing team?

;)

On/Off in sound options should be fine. Anyway it's more comfortable to use Teamspeak/Ventrillo/Xfire.

No cause that shit ruins the game, and the strategy of things ie. your partner talking to you while hes dead to tell you what to do, instead of using your own fucking brain.

Now I remember why i made this thread and thats for that exact reason.

So ya if Project Stealth programmers could make it virtually impossible to have it function with project stealth or while project stealth is running , then I think thats a good medium.  Playing the game the way its meant to be played.

It's like when the party chat was implemented into xbox live.  It has almost fucking killed the shit talking/teamwork aspect of xbox live because everyone is in parties, but it enabled you to talk to a bunch of your buddies.

You're not going to have voice chat by default?

I've played far less complex team games than CT that practically require a voice-chat team to get a clear win (L4D comes to mind), how do you expect proper strategy when we have to stop to type every few seconds? Or is that not being implemented either.

The "You might want to talk in X app instead" excuse is crap. I've talked to friends via steam while playing L4D, I just turn their mics off and bind-to-key in-game. As said before, party systems kinda ruined a lot of XBL games. Not adding voice-chat just because people might want to talk to others is practically bending the mod over to be assraped by the same 10-foot pole that ruined the few decent teamies xbox had.

Is there any reason you have for NOT adding it?

Voice chat will be there, I guess. But I don't think somehow disallowing other voice-programs is a good cure against cheaters.

Cheaters are a problem, but my bigger concern is still gadget functionality. While listening in on the other team via Spy Traps/Spy Bullets was a minor feature compared to what they could do, it was still a significant feature.

Maybe there is a way to "tap" into their Mic regardless of them using the PS Voice Chatting? I don't know HOW it would work or if it's even possible. I imagine that instead of it just opening up the Mic lines in-game, it would go and get the line from their computer... or some such thing.

Starting to sound illegal or some non-sense. Either way, saying that people would probably use other programs anyway, as said before, is a pretty bad excuse to not take a significant part of your games functionality (Voice Chat) and not give it the time it deserves.

Hahaha...  We could make it so the game goes and finds the merc's secret porn stash from their computer.  Then, the spy could use the merc's porn like a magazine from Metal Gear Solid.  Once the merc gets close to the mag, he's trapped for the entire game.

Or you could make believe that the info on the disks you're stealing have the merc's porn stash on them.  But making believe wouldn't feel illegal... Maybe once you return the disk you can view their porn.

Porn.

This actually should be an easy problem to solve.

You know when you go to uninstall a program and you get "please close the program prior to proceeding"? Well, you can code the same detection into PS. If the program detects a third-party chat, you get a message that states that PS has its own voice chat capability which is integral to gameplay design and asks you to close the program before proceeding. Then code that this check is run periodically, like once every 3 minutes in game and prior to commencing any round. If the voice chat program is open, your game will close and the message will appear.

Now you just need the manpower to devote to coding this.

So when you want to informally talk to Person X on the other side of the world, who's not in-game, we should forbid that? Let me rephrase: if I want to talk to my sis who's on holiday in Australia (example...) via Skype while playing a game, what the hell does the program think it is to disallow that?

I am really against it. It's some sort of restrictive DRM. It blocks the right to use voice-programs. And I don't feel like keeping a database with signatures of the thousands of voice-chat programs.

Solution to all this: Just don't disable voicechat when a player dies, it's lame and makes people get creative using third party tools.

Downside of the above solution: You will be presented a black screen when dead untill respawned.

And for the smartasses thinking "Why not use the 'downside solution' as a solution?", because that will make people use third party tools again to talk about their death, where it happened, who did it, answer to life, favorite movie, etc.

You have every right to use any voice program you want, just not while playing the game.

And maybe I'm alone in this, but if I were to chat with my family member halfway around the world, I wouldn't be playing a game that required a lot of my attention...maybe something dumb like solitaire, but not PS.

Hey, I agree with you Spekkio! Now that I got that out of the way I'll respond to Frvge.

This program is a game. This game "requires" teamwork. Teamwork requires communication. Unless you're SUCH good teammates that words need not be spoke... which is unlikely.  Sure, typing is an option, but when you type you aren't actually playing. Like Spekkio said, if you're talking to someone important then a game that "requires" teamwork is probably something that you shouldn't be playing.

Plus all those weird faces you'd be making on Skype for your relative would probably cue them into the fact that you aren't actually listening. Considering even without in-game voice chat there is still the in game Music, Sound FX, etc. to get in the way.

You compared it to DRM, but this is far from it. It's creating an atmosphere, and a set of rules. I can hear people already shouting "RULES!?", but let me explain. Gameplay is the point of a game. You want people to use all the features you are giving, that you spent time on. If you spend the time to make a Voice Chat system, why would you give the option to totally disregard it?

"Forcing" people to use it just emphasizes the point that this game requires more communication than your average TF2 match.

Speaking of using different softwares to communicate, is it possible to fix the echo? Like if you have voice chat in-game, and software running on windows to communicate like Xfire, is it possible to remove the echo effect? Cause in SCCTMP it exists and it sucks we can't use the hack feature :/

Dude, are you serious?  Of course if you are using 2 programs to communicate you're going to get an echo, and this is true with any game.  All you have to do is mute everyone you're talking with in either the other program or in the game.    >.<

Is there any other reason? If you don't mind not voicechatting when dead or out of lives, what's the reason you will be using a third-party tool to voicechat about the current game you're playing if the game supports that natively?

There is.  I tried to say it in that post.   :D

You literally have to either mute everyone you are talking to in xfire/ventrilo, or mute everyone in the actual game lobby you are playing in.   You have to mute the people with you in the game lobby if you are also in a 3rd party chat system with those people.

In-game voice chat is not the best quality and it sucks you can't comm when you are dead (It's the realism feature I get it but still). Xfire has great quality but not the best ofcourse. If you mute in-game you cannot use the hack/speak feature.

No, your opponents can still hack your communication if you just turn down the voice volume but they cannot if you mute it in-game.

Being facetious dude, it is very possible, if your buddy is hearing the echo,  that its because there are two streams sending him your voice. If you are hearing the echo check your input settings since it it is likely you have your stereo mix set to monitor or something silly like that.

No, your opponents can still hack your communication if you just turn down the voice volume but they cannot if you mute it in-game.

But it's either they can't hear or they cannot hear me.

There is literally no way to fix that if you want to use xfire at the same time and also hack communications.

It just doesn't work like that.

I guess we should hope that PS will have same or better voice quality :)

there is no way in the universe to regulate voip, just get over it.

ts/ventrilo was also used to communicate outside/between different game lobbies.

QuoteSolution to all this: Just don't disable voicechat when a player dies, it's lame and makes people get creative using third party tools.
You really think that people use ventrillo and TS because they can't speak to each other for a whole 10 seconds?
Is there any other reason? If you don't mind not voicechatting when dead or out of lives, what's the reason you will be using a third-party tool to voicechat about the current game you're playing if the game supports that natively?
Most of the excuses I've gotten in CT revolve around the voicechat in CT being "shitty quality." However, if you set your options to high quality sound, the voice quality is more than understandable.

So maybe you're right that people are using 3rd party chat programs to bypass the mute upon death, but that doesn't make it right. People communicating within a game should not be able to give each other heads up while dead, particularly when you get a temporary bird's eye view of the action. It's this very aspect of third party chat programs that has most people upset over it.

Yea, sure, voice hacking is a neat feature, but as a merc its use is spotty and as spy it's useless entirely. Mostly, I just use it to taunt other people.

Which is the best part!

But it did have a viable use. Though Voice via Spy Bullets/Traps/Hacking was very shotty in terms of actually being useful, it's those times that it was when it shined.

I believe it had MORE use on Xbox. Seeing that the Voice chat was the ONLY means of communicating to your partner. It meant that plans were actually formulated in game, talked about in game, and executed in game. Hearing in that a Merc in deftec is going to leave B to go and check on A could be a vital piece of info for that spy that was waiting in B for their chance at getting the objective.

It depends a lot on the players involved, but this is one of the only things that anyone could mention about the Xbox version of SvM that was better than the PCs.

Perhaps this whole idea of "Forcing" in game voice chat doesn't work with PC, but again, if you put time into making a Voice Chat system for gameplay purposes (Which is the only reason you'd make it, right?)... you really shouldn't let people bypass it just because you think it's "Too Restrictive".

It was fun when it worked for sure.  Sometimes it just glitched and didn't work and Ubisoft never bothered to fix it.  It probably worked about 90% of the time and sometimes people don't have mics/don't talk.  So I'd say it was only effective/fun about 50% of the time.  I'd would guess that's higher than on PC though.

I'd have to guess it would be.

While on xbox there was the chance that the opponent wouldn't have a Mic/Didn't talk. It's very different than talking, but bypassing it with a secondary program. PC also is also subjected to the same people, but adding in Text input, and... any messenger/voice chat program can render in-game voice chat useless.

Now it would be interesting to see if when people were spy trapped or bulleted that it ALSO "Listened In" on their text chatting too (In-game).

What would be a cool little detail is to have the merc's text communications scroll down the monitor's screen while you are hacking an objective.  Maybe pick up something interesting if you care to look.

OR perhaps there could be a hack (I think you've mentioned this before) that instead of hacking Vocal communications, it hacks text. Like you bug a signal transmitter of some sort. Mercs could take it off, much like Spy Bullets/Traps, but instead it's on this thing, rather than your partner.

Vocal is still left to spy traps and spy bullets, but text is handled by this.

Yeah I remember saying that.  Sounds cool to me but that's all it would really be is cool.   :D

Kind of like the current communications hack.  Possibly getting some text info makes it more useful than the current hack, but it's still kind of just a novelty feature imo.

Those little features are so underused in the games of today.

We've all seen two sides fight each other. We've all seen weapons and counter weapons. We've all heard smack talk from the other team. This all happens in most games now a days regardless of what genre they are.

The small novelty ideas like Cross-Team communication hacking is something I've always found very appealing. Those kinds of interactions are used so little. My friend that I played CT with and I still talk about all those fun moments, and features such as those come up more than anything else.

Your partner, getting grabbed in Deftec getting dragged into the upper door to A, only gets out "He got me" before the spy cuts off communication to give a sly, "Thanks for letting me into A". You turn from your position on the C side catwalk to see your partner, quickly scope in and let off a bullet just as the door shuts. A split second of doubt goes by as you wonder whether you missed or not, but the kill text pop up washes away all worry.

I felt awesome at that moment! Without the communication feature, it would have just been another kill. With though, it became an intense situation with a sprinkle of irony.

Without running said hacking feature into the ground by just rehashing it 15 different ways; I have to wonder what other ideas run that same line of uniqueness?

I'll run it into the ground a bit more by saying a wireless glove would be cool for hacking text coms.  You could literally take the text away from a distance.   :D

Another little novelty feature (that could actually affect gameplay) is controlling the merc's heartrate while you've grabbed him.  Or, maybe something simple like just hearing the merc's/spy's heart beat slow down could be an indicator of when he's about to choke to death.  That doesn't sound so hard to do but it would be kind of cool.

Anyone have any low priority novelty ideas to discuss? :D
