Title: rolling animation
Post by: Scopri on March 10, 2010, 02:19:22 AM
This is something I just HAD to point out.
Rolls are NEVER, EVER, somersaults.

Rolls are performed by turning the head to one side and rolling along the opposite shoulder. Rolling by somersaults causes neck injury. I hope you take this, and yes, I made this account just to tell you this. If you already figured this out, then whatever.

yes we know,  we did the research.  You use your forearm and elbow to guide the direction of the roll,  and contact is maintained along this arm and follows through with the scapula.  The shoulders are tilted in such away while tucking in, that the roll is about 30 degrees from parallel to the spine.  The head and neck never touch the ground.

IMO the 'correct' way gives a very wobbly animation which makes it harder to predict where you're going. I personally prefer the unrealistic version for that reason.

Sounds like a lame excuse, to be honest. You travel in direction of they keys you are pressing, I don't think anyone relies on the animation to tell them that...

Let's say I tested it out and I didn't like a Spy being diagonal on my screen like / for almost the whole animation when the direction is | . Confusing and it looked bad. There are dev members who like it. I don't know what the final decision is going to be.

Mr.Mic's excuse is a good one. Gameplay trumps realism. If a symmetrical animation leads to less frustration when trying to avoid lasers and run away from mercs, I'm all for it.
