Title: Controls
Post by: CHOKE ARTlST on December 08, 2010, 04:13:11 AM
Hey guys. I am new to this forum, but I am really excited about this project. I just stumbled upon the site a week ago when when I googled "spy vs merc comeback in 2010?" hoping Ubisoft had seen the light and decided to finally give the people what they have been asking for all along. I did dabble in the SCCT for the PC after the Xbox version servers were no longer operational, but I had to dig around and find a fix to the flashlight bug and found the controls to be a headache. I wasn't too excited about the feel of the mouse and keyboard, so I bought a control that resembles the Xbox's without the triggers (replaced instead with double bumpers, you know the kind). The problem was with the movement/strafing. I could not make it work right for the life of me. My question is will there be a better compatability with a controller like that with this game? Although I do play other PC games (mostly RTS), I have always prefered the feel of a controller in my hands for this type of game. Thanks.

Last I heard it was a possibility. There are a couple people on here that came from Xbox and do still like the idea of playing, at least spy, with a controller (Me included).

What it sounds like is that it's a "Minor Feature", as just getting the game playable first, in general, is obviously top on their priorities. Eventually though, if there is enough of a want, the devs will look into supporting the controller. Otherwise, there are third party programs that can be used to get a similar layout as was once on Xbox.

If I remember right Frvge or someone also said that the UDK engine, which they are building this game on, is Xbox (360) Controller compatible. So that's a plus...

Here are all the PC Players on here's answer to this though:

"Why use a Controller? Mouse and Keyboard are much more precise."

"If pitting two players together, one Keyboard and Mouse and one Controller, then the Mouse and Keyboard player will win every time."

"It'll take up too much of the dev's time that could be better used by creating more content."

Let's not forget:

"Xbox is for noobs"

Agent's Response to this thread:

"Pinnacle game profiler. Look in to it. You can also double bind buttons with the newest version so it plays exactly like the Xbox.

kthxbai"

Then finally, the reluctant Xbox Player that decided to play CT on PC more regularly:

"It's easier to just learn the PC controls than try and get a controller to work the same as Xbox..."

Haha that last quote was me.  You think I'm reluctant?  :'(

lawls

But seriously, I think it's easier.  No matter what program Agent throws at you, and throw at you he will, it's just not the same.  You have to try to flatten your hands haha.

I actually thought of me for the bold, then you for the quote ;)

I'm still not fully convinced on the fun-ness to be had without the Controller as a spy. Course, I played a few rounds with Agent the other day. While I had a bit of fun; I have the feeling that losing near every round wasn't exactly Agent's idea of fun. ;D

But did you SEE that necksnap? Flawless.

I've come to believe that not only am I great at SvM, but that my prowess only comes out in short (but powerful) bursts.

If I was the harness my true power over both Spies AND Mercs, then I would be an unstoppable force that only an AI designed to not lose could even pretend to contend me. Sometimes you just have to wonder why people even try when there are people like yourself in the world. All this, and a controller isn't even added into the equation.

It's kind of hard to carry Agent on your back sometimes and win despite him.  Then he gets mad because we lose a round on a PC map that I never played before.  :D

Not to mention how many times he reminds people he beat someone when they just started versus.

Farley@ you still remember the time how I was flaming on aquarius when you had your bloody fingers broken by that controller, and that you had to get used to the keyboard and mouse again? Hmmm :P You got necksnapped twice! Shame on you!

I can't tell if you did that on purpose, but you reminded me of how you beat me even though I just started on PC just like the first part of your post says.   :D

Actually Ston3, you are wrong for once, Agentx never smurfs, and I smurf because people just ban me and I have a knack of going on a different name and giving them my good taste.

Also cheat my way out of it? That funny, cause you said that to every play that ever beaten you I won't name them. + Your name doesn't need to be tarnished, you suck as it is.

Robert keep trying to cover your ass thats great .. put a show on for everyone but I know it as well as many others ,you can't keep up with skilled people, and the people you think are skilled are people like Kingwebs and Knooger , how sad, Facts are Facts ive been in more tournaments then you have fingers and toes ,But thats fine to critisize ,look I wouldn't have a problem with half the people in the community , if people just came clean and Played me on a 1 to 1 level ie. Ohh i dunno someone who actually communicates and isn't a dead weight on my shoulder.

Because at the end of the day Robert when PS does come out I know for a 100 percent defining fact You won't have the crutches there to help you stand where you are today.

Finally first and foremost that also goes out for those douche bags who got used to saying that Its part of the game To EMF ghost.. well all those people who got into those bad habits won't have that there to rely on either.

I can adapt but I did not feel like adapting during that match.  I felt like typing in all caps and leaving when I had no lives.

Yeah I am pretty sure I will find a lot worse bugs to use against you that will tick you off even more, and to be honest, I already surpassed you so that all I ever need to.

Agent, that noones fault, if you can't keep up with the game, well admit it you suck, and to be honest, I don't know why you still asskiss the old school vets, because they don't even play anymore, and right now the only strongest people I can think of is either webs or blackveldt, Knooger finished scct, he only plays....well he barely ever plays, yet that still didn't kill him, he was off versus for 1 week and he still kicked major ass, you were off for 3 days and you were lame as hell.

PS: Has anyone noticed that Agentx is playing black ops?

Dread, Agent, comparing your skills of a 5 year old game (seems older) isn't sounding any cooler the more that you two go back and forth.

So...

Stop it.

Before I whip out my E-Peen and slap you both down.

Yes people like me and Curdymilk actually have a future in college, what do you have? Pissing on Ubisoft, Hating Conviction when it's actually a great concept game, Secretly hitting on blackveldt and secretly being rejected by her? :P

Have fun being in debt and possibly getting a job, which in this day in age I know college /university students who have a degree and can't find a steady job , soo that argument is flawed.

So how 'bout them Xbox controls?

I contend that they are in fact better than the Mouse and Keyboard, and that someone should make a program that not only has the ability to double bind keys, but also be able to tell the difference how how far forward you are pressing the thumbstick.

Like, at a certain threshold it key-presses the Middle Mouse Button (MMB). Vice Versa, on the way back down it presses it again.

(Stick Centered --MMB--> Stick Jammed Forward)

(Slow --MMB--> Fast)

(Example A --(Abbreviation)--> Example B)

PS Team... ASSEMBLE!!! Make me this program for the price of free dollars!!

Hey Wormfood. I'm also new, played on the console, and found out about PS pretty much the same way. I play games mainly on the PC nowadays and even then the spy controls felt awkward for me too.

Misty has never heard of the quick turn move on xbox.

Assuming "controls".

Sorry I had to.

When you need a special button just to turn around, you know you've got problems.

I still don't get how on earth people can play FPS on First person and say it's better than PC one, my friend said to me once, the only difference is that  you turn around faster, isn't that the whole point?

Also the thing that weird, how come when you play on consoles. they do not allow you to change your keybinds? What if I wanted X to be my saber throw, and Square to be my force lightning? A bit unfair in my opinion. Good thing PCS have special programs to emulate that stuff.

By the way agent, I don't need a job, goverment pays me just to be in college, and I doubt someone with a degree will ever have trouble to find a job, so stop trying to know more than others, because people with a degree are never job--less, not in here at least. As well as if you have a degree University will find you a job, and they arrange trips to go to the places like Japan or US.

Oh god it makes me so mad when they let you change things but don't let you have multiple buttons for the same command. I want bomb on A and B so I can reach it easily no matter which other face button I'm holding down. So mad.
Now that I look at it that doesn't have anything to do with controllers really but I'm so mad I don't even care. Fuck.

That's not true what-so-ever. Blackveldt is an extremely good player and oftentimes was the one that made the winning effort in our games. Our playstyles meshed well. She's also very picky about who she plays with.

The only thing she has trouble with is 2 spies aggroing her, 2 GOOD spies that know how to do it.

But that's okay, I suck at that too. I usually just start spinning and shooting.

I just don't care enough about CT anymore to play, and when I get talked into playing with her by her, I don't care about people EAX whoring, just play, have fun.

If I haven't played more than twice in the last year does anyone really think I care if I win?

There was a quick turn around on the console. I think it involved tapping the move stick twice. People use to do it all the time. That being said..

I play alot of PC games and normally don't mind the mouse/keyboard. It would just take some getting used to and since I still play Xbox stuff (especially shooters) I would rather stick to that style.

Any help with getting the Xbox controller to work for CT on the PC would be much appreciated.

BTW, I really didn't mean to spark such a heated debate, but I imagine that happens more often than not with this group.

Title: Re: Controls
Post by: Cronky on December 14, 2010, 01:39:47 AM
Here's something for controls that I'll just haphazardly throw out here.

HOLD FOR SLOWDOWN

In CT on the PC you have a speed button. Usually the Middle Mouse Button by default. You're crawling at breakneck speeds, then you press the button, now you're crawling at a snails pace. It's fine, it's good, it's none too hard to figure out. When you want to go back to speeding down a corridor at full speed you simply press the button again. It's simple and works. It's not some variable speed like on older Splinter Cells. To which going one notch above a mine's detectable threshold was entirely possible (at least in single player).

What I would personally prefer though (in PS) is if you were able to have the option to turn THAT situation into THIS situation:

You hold down the "Speed Button", you go slow. You release the "Speed Button", you return to normal speed.

No need for the 2nd click anymore. I find it bothersome and useless and I would like to see it go away. Though still there for those that can't handle how much skill it takes to be this theoretically fast paced.

If you're going slow then there isn't a likely chance you're using your gun. Plus you are already slowed down by simply pulling out your gun. Thus you wont be juggling like 15 mouse buttons (example: "HOW THE F**K AM I SUPPOSED TO HOLD DOWN THE MIDDLE MOUSE BUTTON WHILE SIMULTAINOUSLY PRESSING THE LEFT BUTTON TO FIRE, AND THE RIGHT TO SHOOT MY GRENADES!!! *Rage*").

If you're trying to escape then you wont have to worry about miss-clicking a button and going ultra slow for that needed micro-second escape, since at all times that the speed button isn't pressed you'll be going as fast as you can in your given stance (Crouched or Standing).

-------------------------------------------------------------

Also it sounds like it would be VERY easy to put in. 90% of games have the option to Toggle the crouch button (when applicable). This is essentially the same thing (in reverse). I've never heard a developer going, "Yeah, we would have added in another level that fleshed out the whole story... but instead we opted to add the ability to toggle the crouch button."

-------------------------------------------------------------

Agent assured me this isn't possible in CT, which I believe is true, but I still found this FAR too appealing to not bring up here.

ALSO, if this is possible somehow for CT through some complex series of deleting my System32 folder, altering .ini files, and tying one hand behind my back then I'll totally do it. Just tell me how.

Of course it's possible in CT, just get a keybinding program and set it so for example when you press and hold ctrl, you execute 'mousewheel down', and when you let go, 'mousewheel up'.

Yeah, you need to use the wheel in single player since Sam has like four speeds. I guess you didn't ever try it on the PC, but I'm thinking most of the people who did woulda kept using the wheel for movement in versus. People who use a speed button are gonna be rare as hell.
I dunno who'd want a hold button for sneaking, though, anyway, 'cause that sounds like it'd get annoying very fast. Imagine trying to be sneaky for like half a minute, you'd need to keep holding down the button the whole time. Shit'd suck.
Title: Re: Controls
Post by: Cronky on December 14, 2010, 03:15:36 AM
I said I'd personally prefer the button to be "press down/release"-able. I don't expect EVERYONE to like it.

It's not like you're constantly moving while being "Sneaky" through a level. Though maybe you are. I don't know.

I've barely played Versus on the PC. I'm one of them controller advocates, so you can tell where my loyalty once was. The few times I have though I'd wish I would be able to do just this. My finger is already on the mouse while playing, and the middle mouse button is one of the easier buttons to press/hold down without exerting TOO much effort. Perhaps I'm just a masochist.

Plus it's only when you want to go in to ULTRA slow mode... I dunno, I like it.

Don't you want to play with Agent?
Title: Re: Controls

I do eventually plan on learning the game once again. Once I find a way to bind the middle mouse button in a way that emulates this idea.

(As of right now it's kinda tough. My Razer mouse died on me, so I have to find myself an outside program that does that. Hell, I probably already have on and just don't know it)

EDIT:

Actually... figured out after taking a closer look at Pinnacle Game Profiler that I could get the Spy to Run/Walk by pushing the stick further. Going to take a bit of testing to get it reliable though. Plus making a profile for Spy that actually gives full access to everything easily.

EDIT #2:

I've spent the better part of the night (and technically the morning) and ALMOST have a Profile for Pinnacle Game Profiler that emulates Xbox Controls for Spy to a 360 controller.

I say almost because I'm having a hell of a time getting the "Run/Walk without pressing a button" working reliably. Though I'm starting to believe it's because of the limitation of program (It CAN'T be me ;)). Everything else though is fine as wine.
Title: Re: Controls
Post by: Cronky on December 15, 2010, 08:09:25 AM
Double Postin it up.

So I've done pretty much all I can do for this profile. With some help from Farley and Agent about what buttons did what, and also the moderators on the Pinnacle Game Profiler forums I've got a near-"Faithful" reproduction of the Xbox controller for a 360 controller on PC.

To use it you'll need Pinnacle Game Profiler. The newest version. They have a 30 day free trial on their site:

www.pinnaclegameprofiler.com (http://www.pinnaclegameprofiler.com)

Or

Direct link to the trial download:

http://pinnaclegameprofiler.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=263&Itemid=170 (http://pinnaclegameprofiler.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=263&Itemid=170)

It's up to you what you do after that 30 days.

Extract the files from SpiesVsMercs.rar, import the profile in (Double click on the .pin), and set it's path to where you launch your game from. (I have mine launching of the .bat file that opens up 3DAnalyzer which launches Versus)

Now there is one "Bug" that you have to watch out for. It involves movement. It's explained in detail in the Gamepad Controls document I've included. (Which also goes over what all the buttons are, in case anyone forgot or never knew)

A second profile is also included for those who rather to avoid the problem, in turn getting a less "Console"-like feel.

Here's the link to the download:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/g10fh1b4tq01fun/SpiesVsMercs.rar

Try it out if you can and get back to me with what you think. Or if you made any modifications that might interest other people (Easier access to stuff, fix the movement issue, etc). OR if there is something wrong... I never did try it against a Merc...

EDIT:

Just tried the profile against a Merc opponent (My Laptop. It's not very good at the game), and I neglected to mention in the Gamepad Controls document that the A button kills Mercs. Right Trigger knocks them out.
