Title: Project Steatlh question
Post by: ArgusMercenary on December 11, 2010, 09:55:50 PM
So what is this exactly, a separate game or a mod. I don't know if I'm correct or not but I remember that it was going to be a mod accesible from some game that used Unreal Engine 3 (I think) or something. Also what does UDK stand for?

UDK = Unreal Development Kit

Mod as far as I know requires a specific game and retains most of the games features, for example Max Payne can be modded into Equilibrium type of a game, where it's completely different, but retains most of it's gameplay type, but none the less it can be completely different if you have people to do animations and models for you. Like it used to be for Project Stealth on UT3

A game is complitely on it's own and does not require a specific game to be ran in a background or whatever it's called.

We are now a standalone game, based on the UDK. :)

I really thought for a moment that there is some deeper meaning in those words but then I read that farley wrote them and got back to reality ^^

This guy is giving the PS developers a horrible reputation.

The Unreal Development Kit is a pre-compiled version of the Unreal Engine 3, the powerful engine used in hundreds of games, including Gears of Wars, Unreal Tournament 3, Batman Arkham Asylum, Fuel of War, Brothers in Arms and is the successor of the powerful Unreal Engine 2, on whihc games like Splinter Cell, Killing Floor, XIII and many others are based on.

UDK is free to use, but can for a small fee also be used for commercial games. It is exactly the same package (even the content) real game developers would get, excluding the source required to recompile the .EXE file (which you would pay tons for).

The fact that a game based on UDK is a MOD is a common misunderstanding and most likely caused by the numerous of ambitious game developers who do not have to power to create their own assets and thus "mod" the example content that comes with the engine.

Project Stealth is NOT a mod, as we only use the engine and have removed ALL of the default content, useless tools and even standard UnrealScript code that comes with UDK. We are just another Unreal Engine 3 based game, as considering the state of the game, you can't even say that it's UDK anymore (due to the various custom subsystems we made).

EDIT:
And yes, every Splinter Cell game has been made with a (heavily!) modified version of Unreal Engine 2, where Double Agent and Conviction took a lot of the features of Unreal Engine 3. Do note though that the Splinter Cell version of the UE engine is at least 10 times more advanced and powerful than Epic's UE2 and UE3 combined, this because of the very dynamic nature of the engine Ubisoft made (Ubisofts tech team is awesome). Full-Dynamic Light-Shafts were already around since Chaos Theory, whereas UE3 just recently introduced a partially fake light-shaft implementation.
