I see a lot of videos and articles talking about privacy and such, but honestly why do people actually care?
Like I really want to know to why is your personal identity such a big deal?
I have a Facebook with all my mobile numbers, every contact, every address, where I work etc set correctly.
I don't use any privacy settings at all, and I really don't see the point of them, they can't do anything with that information anyway, and if they call me, hell better for me, I just answer and lay down the phone waste their money.
What is your opinion on this?
I could sign you up for a number of explicit, weird porn mailings, which are probably hard to get rid of.

Well, people are overreacting. I have few E-Mails other for facebook and shit and other for private mailings.
All who should not see my private e-mails and numbers are strangers. For rest I don't care.
I just really don't see the whole point of being afraid if someone knows your phone number or can see your real face, this whole Identity theft thing seems strictly "If you are a dumbass it will happen".
well the shit starts when you have these things connected to sth usefull I guess like bank account or sth. Other is just small vandalisms, but it is just not right for me that others know my private stuff it is just not right, and that is why I! care...

Criminals have this thing called "plans". At least, for them I hope so.
These "plans" are based on "information". Like the location of a safe, if any, and if the owners are home.
This "information" can be deducted from the "interwebs" and if you supply it yourself, it makes it easier.
Without putting everything you have online, it takes more effort. And criminals don't like effort, else they'd be working a normal job.

I heard many employers are checking the internet for information about their employees, escpacially new employees... so for said employees having such a picture as you've shown (or even worse, ones where they are shown to drink too much alcohol) on a facebook account without private options, can become VERY "bitter".

Meister@ There actually has been an incidence where a guy sued an employer because he asked the employee for their Facebook details INCLUDING the password to his account. That was one hell of a company asking for such things, in fact he wasn't the only one who had that asked, many before him did and they gave it away, he was the 9th person to actually sue him.

Privacy is important because if you live long enough and do enough things, you're going to come across people who you don't want to find you. Maybe it's because they didn't like your clothing style, or maybe it's something much more serious than that.
Women are much more at risk than men for this sort of thing, but as an example do you want that crazy ex to have all of your contact information? Do you want her to have the ability to use it to at best call you at weird hours of the night and at worst open bank accounts or credit cards in your name?
Perhaps there is a thief looking for a nice house to rob in a certain area. Well, your pictures sure look nice and you posted your address, so now it's a matter of just staking out the place.
Most random strangers aren't going to peruse facebook to steal your identity, but why take the chance?
Also, I second that employers are now searching social networking sites in order to screen employees. If you set all your settings to private, they can't spy on you and you come across as a responsible person who guards his personal information.

So privacy on the web is not just about identity theft. While overblown, identity theft does happen, but the other side of the coin is protecting your information from people who you know but don't want to know THAT well.
