Title: Music
Post by: Cyntrox on November 18, 2007, 06:07:26 PM
Hello! I am a novice composer so I don't really know if you'll like what I can do - but hell, why not give it a shot? With a lot of feedback I may be able to come up with something you like.

Here's something I've made. I tried to capture an "epic" feel, I guess it's most suited as some kind of theme song.

well, im impressed, i think you would need a concept for the main melody if you want to make main music for mod. I thought about it but couldnt find an easy and appropriate prox. What did u use to create that ?

Could you please upload it elsewhere, thank you :)
Preferably somewhere where you can do  Right click > Save As...

Thank you. And I used Sequel (http://www.sequel-music.net/), with MIDI recording.

www.youtube.com (http://www.youtube.com) I don't care about quality or downloading as much as convenience for this sort of thing.

Hmz. it's got ups and downs.
Some instruments are good, but some transitions arent good.
It lacks an overall theme. Too much switching of styles/background instruments IMO.

Thank you, any particular transitions you don't like?

The first time of the violins,
the addition of slow strings to the fast piano (but gets better at the end),
the slow ending part is really different from the fast piano bit.

Is it the addition of strings or the change of chords you don't like?

Yes... I'm not too happy with the ending. I'm going to try to improve that.

It's perfect, I like how you build it up from the beginning and the ending is not bad at all, it it creates a nice ending to loop it! (Just make it loop immediatly aftr the endng, you'll hear it's perfect).

Could you give some portfolio perhaps?
And soem information on this song, like, how did you came up with it, how long did it take, would you be possible to create soem kind of theme that keep coming back (a real good example is the music from Medal of Honor Allied Assault and earlier, it has a particular tune that keeps coming back, it's magnificant).

Add me to Xfire, and Ill share some with you.

frvge said the most important flaws.
i like the beginning. it's epic, but not creepy enough, it doesn't convey the moot to sneak around and the suspense for the mercs not knowing when someone attacks out of the shadows.
do you know pandora tomorrow main theme and menu music? would be awesome if you could create something similar.

I don't like all these sections either. And the repeating. Better to expand the sections with new melody notes and have fewer sections.

And what's with the 30 seconds of silence at the end?

I didn't quite like the transition between the violins and the electric guitar (if that's what it is). I loved the rest, though.

This is good. You have great parts but they are arranged oddly. Here's what I'd do if I could edit the song
I've marked basically all the different parts with letters
:00 A
:16 B
:30 C
:42 D
:54 E
1:06 F
1:18 G

This is what I'd turn your song into:
G
mix A and G
A
B delay for an extra bar
Keep the intensity that B creates and make the strings do the piano keys in A by plucking them or short strikes to get something similar to what happens at 1:06 and mix it with D.
Break the intensity with E keep F but then make the plucks of the strings the same in A but only bar.
then D mixed with G
then just G
Loop.

Basically, you've got your parts in the wrong order. See if something like that would work. In my head it sounds pretty good.
Then again, I hear a lot of things in my head.

I liked it. Needs more violins and the creepyness needs to be upped a bit. Overall though, I like it.

I also think that the main theme appears too often. I know its main but imo it shouldnt be repeated by every instrument. It should be something for which people will wait.

I would also cut away guitars (0.30- 0.42) and add there something calm and slow,  which would prepare the listener for what happens at 0.42

Perhaps when creating other themes this could inspire you:

http://www.deusex-machina.com/media/sound/Deus%20Ex%20-%20Main%20Title.mp3 - i still get knocked down when i hear it altough its old.

You could also try something in a Hans Zimmer's 'the rock' way.

(EDIT: ADDED 'NT' - shouldnt)

Lots of good feedback here, thanks a lot guys!

Due to stress in real life I haven't had time to do much work on it.. But I'll probably do some in the weekend ;)

try creating a track with the type of feel that you had going starting from 1:20

Call me sad but I sat on the Deus Ex main menu for like hours just listening to the main title theme and watching the Deus Ex logo spin. o.o Personally I really like themes that can be looped without noticing where it starts and ends. Which is probably why I like Final Fantasy music so much.

Title: Re: Music
Post by: neth on November 23, 2007, 12:24:45 PM
Menu music must be slow and calm cause otherwise it gets frustrating after hours of listening. FFS worst menu music is the one from CT.
Title: Re: Music
Post by: SITHDUKE on November 23, 2007, 08:19:19 PM
I think there should be seperate spy and merc music since they're opposing teams. I like this tune though, really nice. One question is, since none of us play with music enabled because it would drown out the sound effects of mines and cams and since the CT menu music is utter pants will there be any in-game music for each team at all? The only thing the music option effects in CT is when you get necked, the "duh-duh-duh-duh" when you start hacking a terminal and the end game screen.

Nice menu music, victory/defeat short melody, breaking neck sound - is all we need.
Title: Re: Music
Post by: Gawain on November 25, 2007, 01:41:10 PM
it's menu music. if there's an ingame music, it should be very subtle, depending on the situation and team and always on for fairness.

please no ingame music.

Or atleast make the option to put it off.

What kind of music do u guys still need. Also, what kind of format would u prefer it (.wmv .wav)?

well in the engine we will use OGG Vorbis for music playback. For the sake of listening to something you make for the forums, i'd say mp3.

Just stumbled across this from an old favourite show of mine but I heard it and I think it has a really tense atmosphere to it.

it's way too repetitive and doesn't even come close to the pt theme/main menu soundtracks.

what about the possibility for everyone to choose the piece of musik running in menu/lobby?
Title: Re: Music
Post by: Farley4Fan on December 19, 2007, 09:03:57 PM
Yeah, too repetitive.  I prefer no music, but if there is it should be a little more unpredictable.

I didn't say you should make it the theme, I'm just showing it to you. It's at least my opinion of a tense music theme and that repetitive sound is like a heartbeat. Heartbeats tend to be repetitive if you wanna live. :P

if you wanna hear something awesome with a heartbeat, check out max pain menu music =)

The Max Pain theme (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MtiThcmjY80) has too much piano. Now I know you guys will probably stab me for this but the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Zjl2SaBB_I4) theme is good and the one where they're on some of the final questions is REALLY tense.

i meant max pain 2 theme: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=N5uC_my4Vy4&feature=related (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=N5uC_my4Vy4&feature=related)
but it doesn't suit the stealth theme. what i like about it is the drama and the athmosphere of a really wide room.
why don't we try to do something in the style of the pt music? it's the most incredible soundtrack i've ever came across...
and why do we make such a big fuss about it anyways, simply allow everyone to change the menu music to his preferances (i'd probably take the pt tracks)?!
