Title: Animator/Technical help
Post by: Denny on December 07, 2007, 03:37:32 PM
Hi,

no need for deeper introductions. I'm a guy that works as an animator on an upcoming UE3 based game as an animator and that's it. ;D Anyhow, I'm curious if you guys need any assistance on animation or the technical aspects of it? I'm starting to have quite a bit of experience with the AnimSet and AnimTree editor and know some fancy tricks you could use.

I don't have anything to show though, as all my work is currently under a NDA. I'm a Maya user though and I have a hefty amount of experience regarding getting animation and characters into UE3 and getting them to work.

:)

heh...

I am the character artist and art directing the project.

Frvge will give you the necessary Dev status.

Limikkin is our animator and currently working out the kinks in getting a UT friendly rig.  Having you will be awesome to spot problems and make sure we are doing things right.

We have only one animator at the moment,  so if you have time to animate then we can shave off several months of development time.

Mind if i ask what company you work for?

I googled a bit and your work looks great.
The question is: how much time do you have?

I work at StarVault(.se). (I have an company e-mail if you need proof...) The thing is that I've been in two mods until now, I've grown dead tired of one of them because it's going nowhere. The other one is my own. So the thought were to join another active team.

I have to say though that apart from work I have about 2-3 hours each evening and the weekends to work on mods. If you feel that I'm an uncertain card - send me a sample model of some kind and I'll, rigg, skin (not texturing term) animate and get it into UT3 as proof. (obviously you should send me something less important ;))

Edit*
I actually have stuff to show but well... I don't see how a cartoony animation can prove that I can be helpful. (ignore the anime stuff, it's not relevant here. :P)

We usually have an internal poll. So you'll see the answer within 1-2 days :)

Engine experience is really needed and I am going to take your word for who you are.

Its actually pretty easy to get on the team,  we have turned people down due to personality conflicts.  But other then that most of us have already known each other since a few years.

Right now we need Merc/Weapons animated,   bugs worked out with the rig,  and probably sharing your knowledge of how things to need to be set up in the editor.

Asset wise,  getting finished animations is our biggest bottleneck before Alpha.  But I am honestly thinking  we are definately going to get to Alpha.

I don't know how far you guys are from Alpha, but getting animations at all to such a release is no problem at all. It's more a matter of quality. Blocking out animations is pretty fast and the majority of work and time regards tweaking. So having something to play with and have timing shouldn't be a problem.

You know that it's pretty easy compared to UT2004 to see your own body right? What I mean is that it's not necessary to have on-screen weapons like in UT3 but you could rather see the weapon in your hand in the world. What I mean is that there is no on-screen weapon, but the same weapon and hands other see you with. It's all a matter of making an additional joint on the character coming from the root (or somewhere else depending on your preferences), constrained  in front of the face and then attach the camera with code to that joint. So that would simply give you shared animations for first person view and third person view - also adding to the fact that your body will cast shadows on the environment so you can see how visible you are, and that includes the lighting falling on you. :) (Think FEAR)

Welcome aboard!

Now we need to fill some small forms and we have some taxes that you have to pay, nothing to worry about.

You'll have the  257 pages of our small questionary at your desk tomorrow and we expect you to have paid the USD2.500,00 tuition for joining the dev team by then.

Once again, we're happy to have you inside the team and we hope you enjoy your stay as much as we'll enjoy your money....i mean, your works.

Just kidding
