i am just getting the hang of the map editor and i was thinking that a great idea for a SvM map would be a school. I've looked at my school and often thought how awesome it would be to have a map of it to play through. the problem is, apparently making a map of a school is frowned upon. One person was even removed from school for it. Is this something to worry about? should i drop this idea completely or keep going with it?
Keep going, but make the schood new and hi-tech, with a torture room in the basement.
Dude, all rooms in school are torture rooms. ;D
It's cool, just make an office, a library, and maybe a science lab. Make sure that there is a gym. And I'd say a bunch of class rooms you can go into that have their lights turned out. Maybe some vents. Hopefully you can go outside into the parking lot or on the roof. That sounds awesome actually.
Wierd, the only reason I can think of why he'd be thrown out is if the school was worried that the school map was going to be used as a training ground in video games to shoot up the school. In which case, I would laugh and go stupid school. In your case, maybe you should find out more details about it and then think about it. No one other the school seems to care. Anything is game technically.
At anycase, i'm going to highjack this thread and ask about map making techniques. So far it appears Unreal is not too happy about making rooms that have angles or not square rooms. Is there a way around to making quadrilaterals? Or should I change my design and go with 'square rooms'? I'm assuming my lack of knowledge is the problem, such a simple problem yet I am unable to come up with a solution other than making my own quadrilateral brush, which I haven't done yet.
Cant you use the intersect tools? =/
aww shit i'm an idiot. lol
Too busy planing the number of cuts and such that i'm not thinking straight. lol wow. I need a beer.
yea i remeber hearing about that too, might just be a rumor tho. I think school maps would be cool, one of all 4 schools i have been too would be sweet.
School idea seems just fine. People who made Silent Hill didn't get a slap on the wrist for including a school in their game. You won't get kicked out of school for doing it. I say work on it. Maybe make it abandoned with the intercom making funny noises at times. Doors slamming shut. Make it as creepy as possible.
i'm wondering which kinds of objectives fit into a school. maybe a bomb place in the boiler room, a disc in the library/laboratory, laptop in the multimedia room...
you can make it interactive with a sprinkler system, many normal light switches etc.
i think you don't have to add an unrealistic amount of vents if spies can infiltrate the building from the outside and with more than one staircase.
A laptop in the office, a disc in the lab, a bomb in the boiler room, a disc in the library, and maybe a bomb in the parking lot (put it on a car and mercs have to find which car it is placed on). Make it dark and make the lights flicker on and off and stuff.
A creepy school would be SWEET.
i was thinking about a Disk in the Teacher's lounge, Laptop in the gym, Bomb in the boiler/storage room, disk in the library and a laptop in a random classroom
Arrg... Ok, who leaked my map concept? >:( ( :P )

Laptop in gym = easy headshot. Maybe in the locker room?
No. The maps should be profiled as much for easy guarding as possible, since the mercs are on THEIR ground.

You're right....all mercs are set at a school....Neither should be on "their ground."
Easy guarding isn't what a map should be planned around. It isn't supposed to be easily guarded. It should be guardable by 2 mercenaries. It should be difficult for both parties. If you make it easy, then its just gonna be a run around, because the only options are aggro or constant diversion in a setting like that. Making the map bigger and more difficult brings more of a challenge to both parties.
If it were easily guarded spies would never win.
I didnt mean having all objectives in one room, i meant having objectives easily guarded from WITHIN the same room as the objective.

Fire alarm.

Fucking awesome idea.
If the spy were to set off a fire alarm it would mess with their sound reticule and render it useless. Then, spies could just run around without worrying about pinging the mercs reticule. Of course the spies would have to go somewhere risky to turn it on, and mercs would have to leave to an area without objectives to turn it off. Sounds like a shitload of fun to me.
or it only stays on for x amount of seconds, or could be set during map design
It would be like setting off tech room on deathmatch. The mercs would have to leave their post to turn it off. The downside is that spies give away their position when they turn it on.
