Gawain

post your ideas here.

i'd love to see specific tutorials, and the player can choose the order, eg:
-basic movement
-security system, explanation of objectives
-climbing
-equipment (one for each?)
-being silent
-by-passing cams
-grabbing
-jumping
-'camming'
etc... i dunno how hard it is to script some dumb merc bots, but interaction with mercs is crucial

for the merc part:
-shooting range
-camnet training area
-anti-aggro training area (if possible)

in bf2142, there is this stupid ingame voice explaining randomly everything you do the first time...

Daybreak

Spekkio's Noob Guide.

Now, to make it playable and not read it.

InvisibleMan999

Spies:
-Show how to disarm various mines.
-Detail what puts you on radar while carrying a disc
-Explain about MT/EMF and the merc visor's significance.

Mercs
-Explain visions
-Explain sound detector
-Tutorial on placing mines/spytraps
-Gasmask tutorial

Holy crap daybreak you still have that?

Yea, the "noob guide" has a couple of errors in it but it's like 98% good. Daybreak is right: make it playable instead of reading it.

Overstatement

I'm still thinking we need constant reinforcement of how to play with ingame effects. If you throw too much stuff at people at one time, they will forgot and CT is a complicated game with lots of learning needed.

But if we are going down this route, I wouldn't recommended that you teach them how to play. I mean, most of the stuff is obvious: smokes, smoke; nades, hurt; mines, blows up; that thing that looks like a camera is a camera. What noobs really need is to learn how not to play, merc doesn't see you? Stop shocking them! See a spy? Don't let them lead you away from the objectives. And just stop running everywhere and thinking you can take on a merc. There's much less info to throw at them this way and as long as they don't make noob mistakes, I'm fine that they'll receive on the job training of where to put their mines.

Gawain

haha that would be kinda funny, a not-to-do tutorial. we could also do some video sequences, that would save the time for the ai we wouln't need ingame anyway. what do you think of the ingame advice system bf2 / bf2142 uses?

Daybreak

The one thing I noticed about new players was that they didn't really understand the concept of the game. Personally, I knew what to do. It just took time and the right information to do it properlly. I still don't do it that well.

So basic understanding of how the game is played is important. That's what Spekkio's guide does. It also explains a little bit about strategy which is important, but it'd be best for the player also to figure out their own routes and play style.

The how not to play is a good idea, but you don't want to make people feel stupid when they start learning. That's the easiest way to lose them. You want to make them feel like they've learned something and are progressing. A good tutorial will give the player enough info to properly apply what they learned and by doing so they will eventually learn tricks and strategies from that knowledge.

Making a tutorial level, or even a video tutorial in that maner would be our best bet.

Hell, I didn't know I could slide down laders or poles until 2 months before CT was released.

Overstatement

Was I the only one that took an embarrassingly long time to figure out what that spy icon on the bottom left that appears sometimes means?

Well that's a heck of a lot better than having em just get pwned in a real game.

noobs will be noobs and you guys know it. they can watch many videos but still nothing. they must experience this on their own and then watch the vids

Gawain

videos of typical situations a newcomer will run into are a good guideline. i think there are so many dm players out there because they can't figure out how the story mode works and see the beauty in it.

The biggest handicap for noobs is the lack of regular partner. With random mates they can never trytactics that require both spies to pay attention or team play in general. Heck, they rarely even know where coop spots lead cause they never get to try them except for a few common ones.

Gawain

we could give every player a profile with his xfire/icq/msn account, but they have to find their partners on their own. or we introduce a service like scct-singles.net XD
