Customising backpack & refilling gas mask

I think there should be a backpack like in CT, except with the option to choose how much you want of what. For example, you could take 2 mines and 2 grenades, OR 1 mine and 3 grenades, etc. And what do you guys think of being able to bring something in your backpack that refills your gas mask a bit? That could also be customised of course, like maybe you could sacrifice 1 grenade in the backpack for a canister that refills 10 seconds of gas mask time or something like that.

Just a couple of ideas. :)

Seems like something that wouldn't be too bad. There's like... 2 ways I could imagine this working at the moment.

Either:

A.) You set it up in the Equipment screen. Perhaps it says something like, "You can carry X amount of items". It counts down as you tick each thing you want. Whether that is in your gadgets, or your teammates.

Perhaps in the lobby if 1 Merc has the backpack equipped then there will be an icon for the partner where he can customize his his items that are held in your backpack. If they don't alter it then they will just be given the default.

or

B.) There is a sub-category for your backpack. It has like... Support, Assault, Recon, Close Quarters. Each option having different amounts of different gadgets depending on what it's specializing in.

Those are just the two I can think of. It gets a little fuzzy when it comes to, "How do you handle teammate gadget amounts". With option A it wouldn't be so bad, plus it would make me wonder if your teammate brought things like the Tazer or Camnet, that don't use ammo, if you could have extra "room" for your own gadgets (or disperse more, again, to your teammate).

On the other hand, I do think the current backpack system is fine as it is. It's simple, consistent, and everyone "Knows" what it's going to hold. While being able to customize to personally suit you and your teammate sounds fun, it would take a lot of management to keep current. What with constantly changing equipment.

Would be cool, but I can't imagine that being a choice a player would make given the time it would need to execute.

Sounds good to me as long as the gadgets are balanced fairly enough.

Sounds like a nice addition to me. However, making it where you can bring 8 mines or 8 frags would be a little overkill in my opinion. And that's every life, remember that. A maximum amount would have to be put into place.

Yeah, I haven't really thought of each exact combination and how to balance it, but I definitely like the whole concept.

Yeah sure, you tied every match, Steve won both rounds, that just says everything you suck son.

Also, since Cronky mentioned about tazer that doesn't use any type of ammo, adding a tazer to mercenaries energy bar would be awesome, and making tazer just a bit longer too would not hurt at all. (That ofcourse if mercenaries have an energy bar in the first place, which I hope they do.)

On topic: As people have been mentioning earlier in this thread I agree though that backpack is the way it is , nothing has to be changed significantly because if that is done then alot of people who have been expecting this game for the longest time will be disappointed and will not wanna play.

I'll flesh out the idea A above to explain it better:


Backpack Idea:

The backpack has a default load-out. That load-out happens to be an even disbursement of 2 points of extra "ammo" for each of your gadgets (flares possibly 10 - more on that later). It works exactly like it does in CT, but there is a "Customize" option (in the equipment screen) for those that are so inclined.

Summarized: Customization is optional. If you don't customize your backpack load-out. The default is the same as CT (even disbursement)

This "Customize" option lets you re-disperse the gadgets to your own liking. Say... you don't care to have 2 extra grenades, so you click that down to 1. You now have 1 free "ammo" point that you can apply to any of the other 3 gadgets  (or the grenades again if you change your mind). You add that point to the Mine slot. Now you have 3 extra mines instead of 2 in the pack, at the expense of 1 grenade.

Summarized: It's just a system of points. Take one away from one gadget, add it to another gadget.

Tigaers suggestion of a Max Capacity comes in now. You can't have more than say... 4 extra mines in your bag (2 default +2 redistributed points). So regardless of whether you knock out all of your grenades, and all your spy traps (so 4 points in total), you can't get more than 4 extra mines. You will most likely put some points back from whence they came.

Summarized: You can only allocate a certain number of points to any gadget (there is a max capacity).

In the case of Flares, if you are bringing them, you get something like 10 extra ones in the backpack by default (2 doesn't seem right). When you tick points off of Flares in the customization screen, it'll take them off 5 at a time (if it gives 10 at default). So 5 = 1 ammo point. Doing so could mean that someone could effectively gets 2 free points if they want to waste a slot on Flares just to get 2 extra... somethings. Wasting a slot is a huge price to pay for a couple extra grenades or mines though. To counter it, Flares wouldn't be refillable at Ammo Crates (as I think they are currently).

Each teammate is notified if the other has a backpack equipped, and each are in charge of customizing their personal load-out in the backpack. If a person takes a backpack, or has a teammate that is taking a backpack and they don't customize their load-out, then that person has the default even spread.

Perhaps there could be a small option to save a load-out so that you wouldn't have to re-do your customizations every time you enter a new server. (though it may be a lot of words, it would only be a few clicks in-game. So it's not a HUGE hassle)

This begs the questions:

If my partner takes a gadget that doesn't use ammo (Cam-net, Taser) could the other player then have access to their partners unused points? More room in the backpack = more points to the backpack holder? Maybe a transfer from one person to the other gives only 1 extra point per slot. This would probably be unbalanced, but it's a thought.

Also, could you take a point off and instead do something like... as Steve said, give yourself a small recharge for the gas mask (refills 25-50% of it's charge), or just simply more bullets? Another thought to put some discussion to.

This idea doesn't take in the account of both Mercs taking a backpack, but then again... it could just be a 2nd backpack icon or customize button in that case.

This also assumes there is still a "Max you can hold outside of the Backpack" also. So you can only carry around say... 4 grenades. Even if your backpack has an extra 3 in there, you couldn't get access to any of them till you have used at least 1 grenade.

I like your backpack idea, but gasmask shouldn't refill from BP or anything... you have no gasmask anymore, so kill yourself and risk that you can lose objective.

I might agree, though it doesn't make too much sense of why you can't have a spare filter in your backpack?
