From what I can tell, your game is almost exactly the same as Chaos Theory's Spies vs Mercs. Like, apart from updated visuals and new levels, I can't see a SINGLE notable difference.

Why are you making a game that plays 100% exactly like another game, right down to the same exact gadgets/objectives/controls, etc.?

I question your motives. Also, if you're trying to avoid copyright infringement, you're doing a very bad job at it.

We really have no idea what it's gonna be like; people just assume it will have all the same stuff as Chaos Theory.

Chaos theory is just the structure the game is built on. While yes, it's hard to see the differences, it's simply because as of right now... there is very little at first glance. They'll be able to do stuff with PS that Ubisoft's SvM will never (at least at this point) be able to do. Such as actually tailor the game for making use of the Community (instead of just shutting them out). They can also implement things never thought of by Ubisoft. Just at this stage it's getting the basic game working (which plays near-exactly the same).

It's like the difference between looking at the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor franchises. Both are eerily similar, but the subtle differences they have are what make them unique.

Copyright and stuff is bypassed because they are building the game from scratch. They aren't using any code, graphics, sounds, etc etc. from Ubisoft's SvM game. It's also free (though donations are welcomed if you can spare any), so they aren't making a profit off of someone else's design.

I may be wrong on some points, but that's how I see it.

I think the devs really need to at least switch up the gadgets. It's such a dead giveaway when each team has the exact same gadget choices with the exact same effects as the Chaos Theory counterparts. You guys need to get out of the box and create your own gadgets and your own balance instead of relying on another game's tried and true balance structure.

Again, it's the basic structure.

It's like saying any platformer after Mario should think of something else to do other than Jump. Since the gameplay is Unique, making NEW gadgets from the get go is just a little unfeasible. Most that are used are staples to that kind of gameplay already though.

Mercs have Grenades, all FPS games today have Grenades. Mercs have Mines, why wouldn't you put a Mine gadget in? If you didn't, what would replace it and do the same kind of defense? Spies have a Sticky Camera. They need to recon an area, what is good for doing that? ...a Camera.

The hard part is making completely new gadgets up that add to the gameplay without detracting anything from it. The foundation is so strong as is that adding anything to it, thus far, chips away from the overall gameplay.

You act as if everything in Chaos Theory was the completely logical progression for that gameplay, when that's clearly bullshit. There are so many variations you can put on the Infiltrator vs Guard concept that it's asinine to suggest that Chaos Theory's formula is the only way.  If you can't think of your own gadgets/balance, you shouldn't really be developing in the first place.

You went past the "basic concept" when you decided that it was a Spies vs Mercs game. Anything passed that is blatantly copying.

Good points.

Now remember that this game was also supposed to be for those that wanted SvM gameplay. CT SvM gameplay at that. What with Ubisoft not making another iteration of it, random gents decided to make something themselves that gave the same outlet.

While they want their game to be unique, the reasoning behind it was to be the same.. but better.

CT was a high point, a bar to begin at. Anything put later just raises it further. Much the same as any progression in any genre or concept... ever.

In the end, blatantly ripping off games and replacing the skins is what the games industry is. Adding 1 innovative idea every 5 or so years is how bigger named companies came to be. Well... either that, or "creating" the genre in the first place.

PS has the potential to think outside the box, but they need to get the base idea down first.

I actually think, that PS will be more or less a copy of CT, however there are some major differences:

1. NO SUCH BUGS AND GLITCHES AS THERE WERE IN CT

2. NO MORE 32 FPS (although this problem can be solved with fps unlocker or forced window mode, but still not perfect)

3. NO MORE NEED FOR 3D-ANALYZE

etc.

But of course that will be the 1st Edition of PS... Later on the devs can still make changes...

To infringe on somebody's copyright you have to do something that could infringe their copyright.

The very popular search engine called Google was invented by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Use it.
