And Gawain doesn't.  He can't refrain from flaming for no reason.  If he tries to bait me into getting into a flamewar with him, that's a problem with his attitude.  Of course I shouldn't have taken the bait, but he should not have given it.  He should be able to refrain from trying to fight with me, but he can't.  I'm not going to take crap from him.

how about a lock til tomorrow so everyone can cool off ;D

I'd almost done that after Binary's reply, but, futile... I know, I hoped that the reactions would be ok.

Locked till tomorrow (like... 9-12 hours from now)

edit: unlocked

i don't have any intention to start a flame war with someone because it's simply not worth the effort.

did actually anyone besides me wonder wtf a thread like "wooohoooo i'm getting a pc, again, finally..." is doing in a mod forum?

papa, you're also wrong about sclamers. the only differene to the ps forums is that they tell a moron  quite frankly that he is one. if you don't act like a moron there, i'm sure there are plenty of nice and experienced people helping you out. you're really drawing kinda prejudized conclusions here. when ps comes into beta phase, you will probably get to meet all the pc vets anyways...

i really think there's a need for an off-topic forum to keep it all clean as the ps community is growing. another solution would be to make it more obvious that sclamers is the place for off-topic discussions, like placing the logo/link in the upper left with a small explanation or sumthin...

Excuse me, why did you try to a few pages back then?

Part of the reason was that people were always hastling me about getting a PC, including you Gawain.  (Then I finally go get one and you go "What the hell do I care for?")  Another reason is because you guys, most of you guys, know what you are talking about when it comes to PC's.  You have good PC's and I'd like to get some advice from people that I KNOW have good experience with PC's.  Why should I go somewhere I've never been before, where I don't know if they have great PC knowledge, and ask them about PC's?

It's hard not to with all the stuff I hear from you guys.  Like "if you want to spam and flame, go to SClamers".  That's basically all I hear from you guys.  So why should I go there exactly?? Why not ask an innocent question at a place I am familiar with?

I agree completely.  Maybe a little sign right by it that says "don't believe what you hear, it's not that bad of a site" would go nicely as well  ;D

And come on man.  If you don't care about the thread, just don't click on it.  Problem solved.  I say we bury the hatchet because our flaming isn't getting anyone anywhere.  And that just cannot happen if you attempt to lash at me from nowhere.

I didn't read the whole thread, but a few things:

1. You already bought the Gateway, so this might be moot, but...you will end up spending nearly 50%-100% more for a pre-built computer than you would for one that you built yourself. This is money that you could have been spending on more power (ie the graphics card). The tradeoff is it takes you a few hours to put together the machine -- big deal. It's not that difficult, and can be quite fun. It also has the bonus of having everything that you KNOW is in the computer with no superfluous bullshit shareware programs taking up space. This helps a lot when troubleshooting issues.

2. There is no way that a pre-built computer costing $1,000 including a monitor and printer is "good" for a gaming PC. At best, you have 2-3 year old hardware in it, and at worst you have a juiced out processor with a ton of proprietary parts, onboard video, and no PCI-e slots.

3. Upgrades on pre-built computers can be difficult depending on how companies configure their systems.

3a. If you're looking to upgrade your video card, assuming that your motherboard actually has a PCI-e slot on it (most pre-built computers that come with onboard video don't, so you screwed the pooch if this is the case because you'll probably need a new computer because a lot of pre-built cases don't fit the ATX motherboard form), the 8800GT is by far the best price/performance card on the market. It's a little higher than the $200 you're looking to spend, but it's worth it.

4. You can find out what video card/controller you have by right clicking on the desktop, then clicking on properties, then going to the settings tab. The video card (or chip) will be displayed above the resolution slider.

5. Xfire literally takes 2 minutes to download, install, and start, assuming you have a broadband connection. It's a < 5 MB program.

I don't mean to make you feel bad about your purchase, but you really ought to do more research when buying stuff. A post in the "computer and hardware" section of SCLamers would've helped you out a ton, even if it would've just been to compare various pre-built machines. The fact that you don't even know what kind of video card the computer has when you intend to use it for gaming (but it runs crysis gud lol!) speaks volumes about lack of foresight and investigation into what you're buying.

Oh absolutely man.  Usually I would make my own computer.  Without a doubt.  But I needed one quick.  For school and work.  This seemed like the best option considering it has a good gaming capability as well as the regular features.

Best Buy was having a great sale at the time.  At a regular sale price it would go for about 1500 dollars at the minimum.
3. Upgrades on pre-built computers can be difficult depending on how companies configure their systems.
Gateway comes with about 2x less bs than computers like ones from Dell come with.

It won't be a problem upgrading it.  8800 GT is the winner lol, most people have suggested that.  Thanks guys for the recommendations.
4. You can find out what video card/controller you have by right clicking on the desktop, then clicking on properties, then going to the settings tab. The video card (or chip) will be displayed above the resolution slider.
Yup, my PC is at another house.  The graphics card is mediocre.  One of the few things that needs to be replaced to play Crysis smoothly on all high settings.
5. Xfire literally takes 2 minutes to download, install, and start, assuming you have a broadband connection. It's a < 5 MB program.
Downloading now  :D  Funny you asked me that.

Well, my computer is at another house.  I would give you the specs if I actually had the computer with me.  This computer is great for a prebuilt comp+monitor+printer.  Believe me, it surprised me too.  It's also pretty easy to upgrade.  I'm getting the 8800 GT soon.  THEN, I'll end up replacing the stock parts down the road, although most of them don't really need a big upgrade atm.

i suggested to get more pc version experience, nothing more and nothing less.

Farley4Fan

"go get a PC" were words from you and others.  Now I get one and you get pissed I post about it.

Add me guys, papaskullz.

Xris

i will add u when u get home, and i was glad to here when u did, i wouldnt have seen it if u posted in sclamers as i dont go there. PS all the way  ;)

Spekkio

Just a little caveat, papa: the 8800GT isn't going to run SvM correctly because it can't process the echelon lighting, and the chances that Ubi patches the game to make it compatible is <1%.

The newer ATI cards also have this problem.

Farley4Fan

A card that powerful can't process echelon lighting?  Kind of dumb, guessing it's just an error but that sucks.  Does it run most of it correctly?

Bob_Bobber0

Its not that the card "can't" run it, its a driver issue, and since the game is decently old and there is not a huge base of players it will probably never be fixed.

Farley4Fan

That's what I thought.  Don't forget that it is Ubi we are talking about.  Even if the game had millions of players and it was new it probably wouldn't be fixed anyways.
