My TFT screen is brighter (better white) than my CRT. Pretty big difference in contrast too. I think I'll switch to 2 TFTs too.

the natural fov of the human IS relevant. just try playing widescreen for a while, it enhances the whole gaming experience drastically. if the fov is op for the merc side, let at least the spy side benefit from it.
Ok, so go apply to a job for best buy and have fun selling people on the "natural fov." It's still irrelevant when it comes to deciding which monitor platform to design the game for if the FOV makes that much of a difference regarding balance.

75% of people are still using 4:3 and 5:4 displays. Unless that changes between now and when the game is done, you're in the minority, and the world doesn't revolve around you no matter how much you complain otherwise.

Gawain

it wouldn't hurt anyone if both 5:4, 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 are supported. if the higher fov turns out to be op for the merc side, simply apply bionic's hud placement idea.

It already is happening.  It was just like the switch from CRT to LCD sure it took til people bought a new computer b4 most would switch, but how many CRTs do you see now?

I only use CRT.
LCD cheats on color, has a lower contrast ratio, and a lower response time than any CRT on the market.
On LCD, the gamma even shifts with viewing angle.

The only apparent advantage of using an LCD is that it takes up less desktop space.

Um... no. Maybe for the LCDs of 5 years ago, but the LCDs of today are just as good as any CRT.

My point exactly.  Lets not forget about DVI either.  I don't think I've seen any CRTs with DVI.  You have fun with your analog input, I'll stick with my digital.

EDIT: Just checked the BestBuy site, they dont even sell CRTs anymore ... and out of the 8 sales they have on the front page 6 are widescreen and the other 2 are not.

EDIT2: All BB monitors
17" - 1 LCD widescreen, no regular LCDs, no CRTs
19" - 4 LCD widescreens, 1 regular LCD, no CRTs
20"+ - 20 LCD widescreens, 4 regular LCDs (3 are for apple), no CRTs
Conclusion: Widescreen > Regular ratio.

That's just what BestBuy is selling right now. Had you read the last page carefully, you'd know about the steam survey that proves the exact opposite and is far more representative and thus more reliable.

My best buy comment was being fecitious. Anyone who knows remotely anything about computers is not going to buy hardware at best buy.

That just goes to show that you have absolutely no idea how either technology works.

OHHH "Digital", that must mean it's better, right?
Wrong...
Each signal is designed for the respective device that is capable of receiving it.

A CRT with a digital input would look worse than an analog input because CRT devices require an analog signal. LCDs look equally shitty for the same reason when using an analog signal instead of a digital signal. The quality loss is in the signal conversion. LCDs have to quantify the analog signal to use it, while CRTs would have to map the digital signal to a power curve.

"Digital" doesn't mean "better"
Just look at digital cameras.
No digital camera ever made can possibly touch the sharpness and dynamic range of a large format film plate.

Digicams nowadays are pretty damn close, and they have other benefits that film can't match (ISO change on the fly, looking at shots on the fly, being able to delete shots on the fly, never paying for film, photoshop, etc). When I worked at Nikon there were some "old schoolers," but I also suspect that they hadn't looked at what a professional digicam can do in about 3-4 years.

I know an ok amount about computers and bought my laptop there because the price was an absolute steal. For anything else....nope.

Please tell me when the servey was done?  And how many people were actually serveyed, then we will talk ...

The steam survey is conducted every few months, and has a sample pool of 1,385,624 gamers.

That does not matter at all. PS should not only appeal to SvM gamers, but to a huge new community.

Doesn't matter. The point of the survey is to see what hardware most gamers are employing these days so that you can design games that are compatible with the majority of hardware, thus maximizing profit.
