Title: Host advantage
Post by: Blank Man on May 20, 2008, 05:06:01 AM
Argghh! I am at the point of throwing my computer out of the window because of how many babies on CT cry to me about "hosties". No matter what I do, these freakin pissers are constantly complaining about how I host snipe or grab. Well first off, the main advantage a host has is no lag, other than that, cams and jumps are the only abilities. Host grabs don't exist. Don't bother arguing because I've gotten plenty of grabs when the merc is facing me while not being host. The "host grab" is only a quick reaction on the mercs side. There is a certain point where the spy grabs, and the merc can still turn. This is how what you call "host grabs" occur. Please please please tell me there will be no host advantages in PS so that people don't have these idiotic ideas about host kills.

Whatever you play, there will always be an advantage for the host lol. This is an "online" issue.

there will always be some kind of host advantage but the netcode in ut3 is better :)
but if use a dedi then there isn't, so it should be better in ps

Lmao, no such thing as host grab?  :D  There DEFINITELY IS.   I've created a thread about this a long while back.  The answer I got was that the netcode in UE3 is much better so the host advantage will be minimal at the most.

Ok, noob. There isn't a host grab, but think what you like, since you are suuuch and xbox proz

Are you kidding me?  When I'm host I constantly grab people from the front while trying to elbow them, while when I'm just a guest I can elbow someone from behind.  Tell me there is no host grab.

Hmmm, so you have host jump on PC.  Like Xbox.  So you have host snipe/shooting.  Like Xbox.  Woop there, hold the phone, PC doesn't have Host grab like xbox?  Doubt that.  I've been playing and I've noticed a considerable amount of host advantage.  JUST LIKE XBOX.  Quit telling yourself that your host grabs are legit grabs 100% of the time.  Whether you like it or not, you have an advantage in all connection related categories as a host.

So, you are going to sit there and tell me that you have never elbowed someone from behind as a guest, but you've also never grabbed somebody from the front/side as a host?  I don't believe that one flying bit.

Thanks for learning to read, but I said that host sniping was just the lack of lag. I never said that hosts get bigger aiming box or anything. It is just easier to snipe without lag. Logic?
Did I ever say that my grabs are legit? I said that there is no reason for noobs like you to cry about them, because my side grabs do not come from host ability, they come from a quick reaction by the merc.
I have elbowed somebody from behind as a host too, open your eyes please.
I've side grabbed as host... but I've also side grabbed as a guest.

Cliffy also said that when he said, what? GoW lags? I do not understand, GoW is using such a uber hyper cool network coding...

... Don't know what he tested but GoW lags more than any other shooter game on the 360. It's really bad.
I hope they changed that with UT3 360...

It's actually not that bad on PC...

It doesn't matter why, it is an advantage.

Although I agree that it's not worth mentioning; it's not like the host can do anything to prevent it.

Host grabs do exist, and that's a fact. There can be no doubt about that. But a lot of people confuse these with side grabs though. This may sound weird, but it's actually easier to grab a merc from the left side than it is from the right one. If you stand a bit to the left behind the merc and try to grab him, he'll most likely turn a bit, before he gets grabbed, without being able to do anything. Most people thinks this is a host grab, but it's just a big misunderstanding. I've tested it myself, so I know it's true.  :)

You guys are aware that Ct uses the Unreal 2.0 engine right?  We are using the Unreal 3 engine.

Dont expect wonders with better netcode.

What is important to understand is that CT is NOT an fps.   What I mean by that is as spy,  you are going to notice lag a lot more because you are interacting with other players in an extremely precise manner.

UT does not require this interaction because your opponents are most often several meters away from you,  a great deal of the weapons move very slow (link, rockets, missiles, shotgun,  etc etc).   The game itself is very fast,  but the demand on precise interactions is much less then CT.

I don't think we have access to that low-level code with UnrealScript.

The netcode in ut3 isn't much better than in ct, and in some cases its worse. I've thoughly tested this. The only thing that helps is the decent dedicated server support ut3 has. I've played ut3 on a dedicated euro server (I'm from Canada) and didn't even notice I had 170 ping. While playing on a listen euro server I had like 220 ping and it was practically unplayable, because of ridiculous lag and host advantage. So unless we have dedicated servers for ps, I would't bother playing it, cause it would be the same old shitty laggy ct with different graphics.

Dedicated servers are a bad option in a game with 4 players to one server.

Why? 1 real server can host lets say 80 slots / 4 = 20 4-player games.

Shitballs. But dedicated servers for UT3 are designed to hold 30+ players, while PS it will only be 4, so there lag alot less than UT3. It's a shame the net code can't be altered without buying a license. However I don't imagine anyone hosting Dedicated servers on PS, because the fan base isn't large enough.

So you're saying if i hosted a dedicated server/s on PS i would be hosting 20 ded. servers?

+ Dedicated servers don't work in a game with 4 people. If someone has the wrong eq, you're fucked. The hosts are never paying attention so at the end of each round you wait like 10 minutes for them to start the next, it's a real nightmare. Unless there was some system in place, like a bot or something, where you could type something into console if you need to go lobby and players could vote, and you can vote to start again, vote to change map, gametype, ranking (if implemented), however this would only be available for dedicated servers.

The same thing ubi devs thought when releasing ct. Me playing ut3 on Lediniz' server with only 2 of us was lagging insane in ut3. From my own experience it wouldn't "lag a lot less" just because there are less players.
I don't think even if the devs had license they could improve it significally.
One dedicated server could host the current ct playerbase no problem. Fanbase has nothing to do with that.

It was already discussed to death and I think pretty much everyone agreed that first player who joins a server becomes a full admin. Just like in ct except the server uses its own bandwith and cpu, so that players with horrible connections and pcs full of spyware and running programs wouldn't lag everyone else. It would eliminate host advantage as well.

Ah yeh i remember that thread, seems like a good idea. I think we will need more than one dedicated server, after all the publicity its getting with PC Gamer magazines and stuff, maybe two or three. If only 80 people get project stealth I will cry. It will be the same shit, hard to find decent games. I think there would be a slight degree of host advantage, the person lagging the least will have Host advantage. Theres nothing anyone can do about that though. I thought the conclusion of the thread is that it will probably not be possible cos u gotta pay for the dedicated servers or something. Maybe Splinter cell network could do it. Not sure what sortof deal they've got going with the dev team or frvge or whatever.

The same server  ::) You can host multiple websites per server. Like... a hundred, or even thousands if they don't use a lot of processing power (like pure HTML landing pages).

Ohhhh, i didn't know that. Well you learn something new everyday. So what about hosting a few dedicated servers which held about 20 games each?

Would this be possible?

If money is the only problem, maybe players could donate a fixed monthly or yearly rate (like WoW), i honestly wouldn't mind paying for some dedicated servers, just so long as i knew everything was secure, and it stopped all the laggy bullcrap.

This is probably way way way harder to set up than i imagine.

If your grabs aren't legit then I should have the right to complain about them.  I see a contradiction.  Have you ever been backed into a corner, then seen the host come run right towards you, then grab you?  I've seen it and experienced it loads of times, as both the host and as a guest merc.  I have not once seen a guest grab someone from the front of the merc.
I have elbowed somebody from behind as a host too, open your eyes please.
I've side grabbed as host... but I've also side grabbed as a guest.
You aren't going to grab someone 100% of the time from behind even when you are host.  But you are going to grab them as a host from the left side, the right side, or from behind them 90% of the time.  While as a guest it's much much much lower percentage.

I'm absolutely stunned by this post.  Or any post that says there is no host grab.

Listen here Sally. We've determined that host has no real lag. However, whats shitty is the idea of 2 ppl in the same country/continent playing 2 people in another country/continent (i.e. Euro vs NA) and one team not even being able to compete because the lag is so off the fuckin wall. Also, hosts need to realize that when they run a 3rd party program they are lagging everyone else in the server. Not too many people have really figured that genius out.

Today I got accused of lagging a server by taking a shotgun, so the host turned off the mics (dont really know what that accomplished...i did have to use rifle (OH NOES))....WHICH ALSO ACCOMPLISHES NOTHING BECAUSE IN GAME MICS DONT LAG......but 3rd party voice chats do. The person then called me a cheater after we won...w/out comms. Host needs to not be a piece of dung and run other programs. Thats doesn't help the cause....that means all you fools video-tapping (fraps). I can understand if another person is running it...but if host is running it and tries to "seem cool because he has teh l33test skills" while hosting the shit out of ppl.....

Bottom Line: Host doesn't have lag, so he has an advantage.  He has an advantage in shooting because his bullets aren't delayed.  No one can possibly ever get no lag, as much as the host does.  If someone doesn't have a lot of lag, and their bullets are hitting almost instantly, host still has advantages.  Bigger grabbing/jumping ranges.  Stfu, you have no idea Blank Man.

Sometimes my mic didn't work in CT, but fine in third party Apps. Thats the only reason i ever use 3rd party apps.

+ if everyone uses the ingame mic chat, we can make use of spy bullets and traps more.

Thanks for learning to read, but I said that host sniping was just the lack of lag.
Yeah, no shit.  Therefore host gets an advantage because they have no lag.
I never said that hosts get bigger aiming box or anything. It is just easier to snipe without lag. Logic?
Yeah, no shit.  Host has no lag.  Therefore it's easier to snipe as host.  Therefore it's a host advantage.
Did I ever say that my grabs are legit? I said that there is no reason for noobs like you to cry about them, because my side grabs do not come from host ability, they come from a quick reaction by the merc.

Yeah, and I bet that your calculations are really precise, huh?
About the sniping host advantage... it's not only host, it's anybody with a good connection to the server, so therefore it cannot be classified as a "host advantage".
You are so ignorant  :D

I'm so ignorant?  HA! :D

Your stupid comments pollute threds, gtfo. You don't know shit, yet you are driven by the idea that you know everything, so you are  constantly stating your oppinion which nobody gives a shit about.

Dude, I know nothing?  You say there is no host grab ffs!!   :D Everyone here says that there is host grab, are you going to say they also know nothing?

And the topic at hand is Host Grab, not me, so you might want to stick to that topic.

THERE IS HOST GRAB, IT'S LIKE 1000/1 HERE DUDE. NO1 GIVES A FUCK ABOUT YOUR STUPID POSTS CLAIMING NO HOST GRABS SO.....

HOST PING IS 0 = IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT.

Host advantage does exist for any games, except dedicated servers.

The Host is the server, he is the one receiving the data and resending it. It's really easy to figure out how it works.

(https://community.projectstealthgame.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg247.imageshack.us%2Fimg247%2F6092%2Fhostxx1.jpg&hash=652a2dd004e67a0259a32a19b68991ffa9882f3b)

The only thing that could modify the results is the nerwork coding technique. By example, you will see your bullet delayed in some games [Gears of War] when instead you would just teleport in another [Halo]... but the Host always have the advantage.

As Freeman said:
HOST = 0 ping
Players > 0 ping

Even in LAN, the host has the advantage due to data transfer and pixel precision.

Blankman, let me direct you to a vider about host advantages. At 2:32, they explain what they are. All of the previous is about the creators.

Damn, you got me there, I was actually wondering how they were going to explain that in a nice way xD

Anyway, we'll try to keep host advantages to a limit. Obviously, there won't be this Host Grab in PS, because that is just caused by lousy coding.

Though, I have to decline Hyrage's his explanation. It's not like that. In UT3, all the player sends to the host is "ICanHazJoin?" while the server returns "YeaUCanHazJoin".

Basicly after that, the host just sends over some variables, the players position and rotation to all players. This all goes in a fraction of a second. When a player (not the host) draws a weapon, he's in a advantage, because it takes a fraction for others players to see he did that (even for the host, even though, the host will be able to see the player with drawn weapon a little bit earlier than others).

Same counts for the host drawing his weapon, except his query will get delivered a couple of miliseconds earlier, because he misses the step from player to host, which isn't an advantage for him (in case of the weapon drawing example).

I'm just saying, there is no "real" host advantage and I think it's all just antfucking... because, what if a player has a slow computer, he might have low FPS and therefore see things later, OMG, HIGH FPS ADVANTAGE! NOES!

Also, the host having no lag isn't true. If one player has a ping of 200ms, it WILL take 200ms for the host recieving the query of the player, it isn't that the host has a lightspeed connection with all players while the players do not, that's bullshit. Ofcourse, the host will be first to see what a player does before the host it's update query gets delivered to other players, but still, if one player lags (say ping 999), the host will see him lag, just like anyone else.

Last but not least, advantages is all a matter of milliseconds. If all players have a ping of 50ms it will take 50ms+50ms=100ms, to update ALL players connected to the host (saying that the player is 50ms "away" from the host, just like everyone else), the host just sees everything 50ms before others. So yea, a fraction of a second, it just won't be noticable for the human eye. CT just had poor coding...

Edit:
My solution would be to give players that are connecting to a server a warning. A warning like: "Your connection to this host is higher than 250ms, which could lead to disadvantages in terms of lag", because a bad ping destroys every game and ALWAYS gives disadvantages for everyone (even host), eather how good or bad the netcode is.

Note: This "essay" is written with the vision on how it works in most games (even PS), with the exception of CT, which just had a bad netcode implemented, along with lousy coding causing and allowing host advantages. So don't come up with counter arguments as: "but... but... but CT allowed you to do forward grab as host! So your explanation is wrong!!!", again, that's all caused due to lousy coding.

I remember i was hosting a fear server once. Everyone was pinging 1000+, there were like 16 players. My ping was 0. Now i suck at fear, and i mean i suck pretty bad, yet i still pwned the server hard because everyones ping was so bad, and people claim no host advantage.

Lennard, I I specified that network coding was playing a major role on the game, you can take UT3 (as you did) as an example. You (as the host) will see everyone that lags running at a normal speed. When you will shoot, your bullets will be picture perfect.

If you are a player in this game, you will see the players moving, but!! your bullets will lag. Plus, because you aren'T the host, you do not see exactly where your enemies are, just aim a bit farther and it should be fine.

Some games are coded in a different way, but anyway... my friend would explain it better than I do, he is working in that field.

Lennard, theoretically:

The moment a spy grabs a merc, the merc can do nothing.

The moment a merc berserks a spy, the spy can do nothing.

Now, if the spy was host, and they spy grabbed at the EXACT same time as the merc berserked, the spy would kill the due to being a host, no?

You speak of pings of 50 ms, but what if the ping is 200? That gives the host 1/5th of a second in advantage. Theoretically.

Now as we know, the internet is unstable. If you have 30 ping when you join a server, it will jump up and down like a drunk yo-yo. If you happen to hit a lag spike, then by the Law of Murphy, you will die.

Am I right?

Yea, basicly, but remember, this ain't CT, and we will do everything in our power to keep that bad coded advantages to a limit. Basicly, that is more or less impossible, since it's Windows we are talking about, it can only do one thing at once. It basicly goes up to nanoseconds, if the spy pressed grab 1ns faster, he won. Something occuring at the EXACT SAME time is VERY VERY rare, and then again, it's still Windows who decides who was first then.

Then again, pings of 200ms is ONLY 200ms, poof, see, while reading the "poof" it already wen't by. At the moment someone has a ping of 800, everyone will complain one player is lagging and will have the ability to kick or whatever. So basicly, the extreme scenes where the host has an UBER ADVANTAGE on speed is likely not to happen without extreme lag, which no one wants to play in anyway.
