Something like the CS or COD4 symbol that appears when you headshot.

Hey, the announcer was one of the few things I liked in DA. The sounds in that game were osmsauce.

I dont see what harm a small symbol next to "You killed Spekkio" would do...obviously a voice indication would suck, but i dont see whats wrong with a small symbol.

we don't need a headshot indicator like some stupid css kiddies or even an announcer to make the noobs feel good when they finally get a kill. i really hope this game focuses on another target group...

You should really look up ad hominem arguments. Saying everyone who believes X is Z is just retarded and makes you look like a douche, you haven't actually made any arguement against the point itself at all.
Title: Re: Merc Headshot Indicator
Post by: Gawain on August 12, 2009, 06:53:49 PM
so what exactly is the benefit of a headshot indicator?
a dead spy is a dead spy, no need to tell the world about your awesome aiming skillz.
if you add enough bullshit like that it will not only spam the hud with unnecessary stuff, it will also support/attract childish gameplay that revolves about getting headhots instead of acomplishing the objectives.
in fact i would like it more if you'd just get a message "teammate unconscious"/"tm dead" instead of a detailed version of what happened.

This isn't a deathmatch game. At most I can see the kill message stateing, "So and so killed so and so with a headshot." or somethig similar. Kinda like the mercs answer to "So and so has broken so and so's neck."

But really, the game is about winning the match via objectives, not killing the other players. When you can win/lose without someone ever dying, headshot icons and announcers are kinda stupid.

Orr you could use Mr.Mics way of indicating a headshot just like it was done with suspect dojo, a quick message saying headshot  appearing above theier head  or in that case , the cardboard cut out.

No, it's not an elitist argument. It's a "all this shit that some 12 year old social retard might think is 'cool' is actually stupid, gets old and annoying after the 2nd instance, and has negative functional purpose."

Quoteyer because a symbol is oh-so distracting, we're not talking about a huge piece of text that covers your screen saying "HEADSHOT" here....
It could be. This game isn't played on one plane...one spy could be above the other, in which case he will be partially (or fully, depending on how far away he is in relation to the spy you killed) covered by a redundant indication that you did, in fact, kill a spy.

There is no functional purpose to having an icon/voice/message/whatever in this instance. If PS keeps the same indication that, upon getting a headshot, the spy goes into a very obvious death animation instantly and your crosshairs change color, then that is more than enough indication. The rest is just clutter.

Finally, you're talking about people putting in the time and effort to create and program this stuff into the mod when they could be working on something more functional and important.

QuoteAt most I can see the kill message stateing, "So and so killed so and so with a headshot."
Much more reasonable, except be a bit more creative about it ;).

5x5 pixel color change? You're talking 25 out of over 1 million pixels on the average screen size. Why even bother?

He's talking about re-wording the kill message at the bottom of the screen for headshots. That's never intruded upon anything. An icon in the middle of your view will.

Dude i didn't say anything about it being in the middle of your view.  It could be under the the kill message. That wouldn't intrude on anything... like this

XXX Killed XXXX.
      (+)

which takes up much less room than:

XXX Killed XXXX with a Headshot.

No it wouldn't, it would appear in the normal text box that all messages are in. This isn't ct where the text just appears randomly in the middle of the screen.

And that sentence was just an example. Don't take it literal. We aren't going to keep the So and So part either :P

Agreed.

Sure this game is meant to please CT vets but if you want more than just the 5 of you guys playing together then you'll need to take into account what other people want aswell. I'm guessing deathmatch is also not going to be added based on the attitude against it from some of the devs despite it being a simple thing to add. Adding more options to attract other players isn't ever a bad thing, even if you don't like it yourself.

Deathmatch is just the game with more lives, less respawn time and no timer. IMO you should be able to use all visions and gadgets, except for mines and sticky cams.

Well I was reading through this thread and it got me thinking, Wouldn't it be great if there was no scoreboard and no global kill indication?

Here is my thinking. A spy dies while in your FOV, "a spy has been killed". This way you don't know that they are dead and you can stop chasing them, but it doesn't tell you who it was so you will never know if a spy used up all his lives. This emphasises teamwork, you should let your partner know if you killed the spy or even if he killed you since there wont be text to inform him.

Also, since mines and other traps will often times kill a careless spy while the merc isn't present, removing/destroying a mine will have more tactical significance. More creative misdirection can be achieved with a system like this.

My $0.02..............Thoughts?

That may be your opinion, but a lot of people enjoy watching them (and even editing them). It's good for the people who do like them to have these videos around, and if you play the game that these films are about they tend to become more interesting. I play CSS with Semi-Pros so trust me, there's more to it than you think. I garuantee with your attitude about CSS that if you played against a good team like Dignitas or Reason Gaming, you would fail hard. It's important to have fast reactions, quick tactical decisions and use logically use your equipment in Counter Strike, just like Splinter Cell. Not all players of Counter Strike are your run of the mill public players.

It's also important to note that most of the frags you see in professional Counter Strike movies are pulled off not because the player is frag hunting, but because they are defending their bomb bombsite, or trying to gain access to a bombsite to plant the bomb or defuse it ;).

Obviously if your trying to show off frags in a movie, the details of the frag are importantr. If you can see more details about the frag, then it becomes more interesting. This also makes certain frags more entertaining to watch, as headshots are harder to land than body picks (provided you don't spray and prays).

Just because you're not a fan of Counter Strike, that doesn't make my arguments obselete. The fact is that these icons provide a more detailed indication of how you have killed your opponents, and the icon doesn't have to be limited to headshots either. It can be used to show if the kill was caused by mines (proving a good cue for mercs), nades (useful for both spies and mercs) or even suicide (for teh lulz).

I like this idea but only in the sense of removing the scoreboard, because as I've explained before I think that for games like SvM, where complexity is key to the appeal, this type of system provides many benefits for you as you play the game.

If i have my way, this is exactly how we would do it...

but naked. SEXY TIME!!!!

At the very least this should be a serverside option. Also the nudity.

I actually like that idea a lot.

I concur. It will add an interesting, but simple edge to the game.

Make nude skins that are unlockable.....shock value.
