Title: Estimated date?
Post by: Jordan on August 16, 2011, 07:33:30 AM
Just came back to check on how PS was doing and things look great. Is there any estimated date for a BETA or release yet?
Please don't tell me that you are going to let Splinter Cell 6 beat you to release.

Also could you perhaps place a progress bar on the home page to show us how far along you are?

But I would wait for it even if Splinter Cell 18:Remastered has beat you to release.<3

We're pretty damn close to first rough gameplay. Slow progress has been mostly caused by me, but I can assure you that even in my absence the team continued working on a lot of elements.

As for the rest: It's done when it's done, but I hope it's soon ;)

Splash a big logo behind the forum theme of it's release date :) either with a blood themed TBA, or Release countdown: WHEN IT'S DONE

Lennard, as Lead Programmer, was out of the running for about 5 months. So that's a 5 month delay. Seeing as we're already in month 8 and a year has 12 months, 8+5 = 13. Hmz, so apparently we will be at the point we wanted to be at around mid-Summer, in mid-January 2012.

Short answer:
Correct, the timeline has jumped 4-5 months.
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: NeoSuperior on August 16, 2011, 11:07:10 PM
that was a bit confusing... so we can expect some kind of release in January?
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: Cronky on August 16, 2011, 11:11:42 PM
It is worded a little funny, but what he's saying is:

That quote is from mid-summer. At that point, if nothing went wrong, then beta was supposed to come out around the end of 2011/beginning of 2012. Since Lennard got busy for 5 months, thus impeding progress, they are now 5 months behind from that quote.

...Expect beta next June... so much easier to say that ;)

The reason I ask is because if you let SC6 beat you to release, and they include a SvM, you may have some serious troubles with your fanbase.

Trust me, I LOVE what I see from PS and am loyal to the cause, but I can't guarantee that many of the fans that have been here for 5 years won't jump ship if (and thats a major IF) they receive a proper SvM from yours truly.

The character models are badass by the way!

AFAIK, SvM will probably not make it into S6. Then again, I follow it a LOT less.

SC6 = New Splinter cell.
5 = Conviction.

If Ubisoft doesn't learn from their mistakes from last installment, Project Stealth is set in gold on a platinum shelf.
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: DreadStunLock on August 17, 2011, 09:48:49 AM
It was on gold platinum shelf ever since double agent, their patheric games that came after Rayman 3, and the useless most boring installment of AC: Brotherhood. Did they learn anything? <bad word> no

They said they were looking into possibly bringing it back in some way for SC6 in an interview with Mathiue Ferland (or whatever his name is). (no sauce)

He is, they set up a new Ubisoft studio and he's working on it.
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: Farley4Fan on August 17, 2011, 08:59:40 PM
His name is Beland.  I know, I've ripped him to shreds on the ubi site about 20 times up to, and after, the release of Conviction.  I'm sure it all fell on deaf ears but I had to vent my nerdrage somewhere over the disembowelment of my favorite franchise.
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: frvge on August 17, 2011, 09:05:49 PM
Mathieu Ferland made the great games like SCCT (then again, also Double Agent afaik). Beland made the sucky Conviction.
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: DreadStunLock on August 17, 2011, 09:13:10 PM
Might be a big joke, but has there been any patches to eliminate the bugs on Double Agent? I wouldn't mind playing it, if it didn't have crap like constant invisibility, environment popping, or other crazy crap.
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: Cronky on August 17, 2011, 09:20:25 PM
Double Agent's single player wasn't bad. Either of the like 15 different ones depending on which console you bought it on.
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: DreadStunLock on August 17, 2011, 09:33:12 PM
No, I didn't buy any of it, I just saw the videos of it on YouTube, and it had so many bugs it's oh my god, and I think Frvge's signature kind of enforces that...
Title: Re: Estimated date?

Seems like his Sig is talking about Multiplayer, but maybe I'm mistaken.

I own DA though. While I don't give two craps about the SvM portion, I didn't mind playing Single Player. It played like the other games, but with a faction system.
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: Farley4Fan on August 17, 2011, 10:17:02 PM
And a traffic light on Sam's back.  That was cool right?

But seriously, it wasn't horrible.  The "next gen" SP wasn't that bad, and the "last gen" SP was actually good.  Multiplayer was where the real dissapointment was found.
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: NeoSuperior on August 17, 2011, 11:07:15 PM
The most funny bug i experienced in next gen DA (PC version) was one of the JBA HQ missions, where you had to get some blueprint out of Emile's safe. There was a scene, where Jamie Washington entered the room, but was "flying" with half his body INSIDE the ground, similar to SCCT's "swamp bug".

The annoying thing about that was, that i couldn't record Jamies voice... because for some strange reason the conversation he should have with Emile... just didn't happen :o damn i got angry because i had no savegame before that back then :D but at the end i got his voice recorded at a later point somehow.

But LOL... i just fell into the offtopic trap :D

SCDA Single Player was ridiculously buggy. Did a full stealth, but got triggered, and then it crashed. Also during loading... and saving... Arg

Oooooooooooh. I get it. You played the PC Version.

No wonder.

My 360 and I had fun times with it. Either that, or I just missed all the bugs and was blinded by fun.

...except for that like... Sudoku cube... that sucked.

SCDA has more bugs than a rain forest.

a rain forest got more bugs, than SCDA has codes, scripts, graphics and so on... so... since SCDA had more bugs than a rain forest, it would mean that SCDA's bug must extend even over the game itself...

Ahhhhhh... now i understand... so the bugs got into the heads of the developers, and other ubi-games too... now everything about UBI's "quality fall" makes sense  8)
Title: Re: Estimated date?

If you look through the bugs, SCDA for PC is fun to play. I also played the PS2 version on the PC (PS2 emulators are getting better and better!), which was basically CT - interface and engine wise -, which automatically made it a better game. I can recommend you guys play it if you want to enjoy SCDA (it has a completely different story-line, too).

Speaking of the old Splinter Cells, I would love to see Cinema and Vertigo make their way into future SvM installments...if we get so lucky.

What SvM maps were everyones favorites?

Hate to burst ya bubble , but they can't by the official dev team due to copyright reasons , however they can make it if someone decides to create it on thier own with all custom built textures  / models.

DA was the only game I didn't like so far. I play SC games for the stealth aspect. Sneaking
around looking for your objectives or whatever is what the whole series is all about imo. Not
walking around going through the bullshit they made you endure just to go on. If I wanted
to play something that makes me have to make moral decisions I'll go back to the real
world. I play games to get away from that shit. Yes it was bugged but the game itself was
flawed to me as it drastically deviated from the original concept of the series. I don't think I
even finished the game tbh.
Sure there was stealth in the game but it was overshadowed by the rest of the crap they called
a game.

Am I the only one that loved Conviction? At the very least it had the best cover system of any game... ever. It's also kinda sad that Convition is the only SC game I've beaten the SP on...

Anyway, whether or not SC6 has SvM or not is irrelevant. If they don't then great, if they do then competition breeds evolution. In the end PS can only get better because of it.

Also, they would need to gave some impressive stuff to show, because if it will be same or just a bit better than Project Stealth? Everyone will pick the free option.

Also, I agree, the SP on Conviction was very weak, but the CO-OP, Archer and Kestrel, Cover to cover system was absolutely the best out of all I ever seen. I just wonder how DX:HR will do with it's, but so far it's also as good as Conviction, though they don't have Cover to go forward like Conviction does.

on a different note regarding convictions, just to add fuel to the fire;Convictions only had unreal 2.5, and Project stealth was using Unreal 3,
so even if Ubisoft tries for once in thier failed history , as they say history will repeat itself, so in theory Ubisoft is going to use another outdated engine for sc 6 and Project stealth wins cause its using UDK  ( technically Unreal 3.5) soo gg, PS wins, ubi fails end of story. Plus UDk is a constant evolution so thus yeeah more win .

And what stops them from getting Unreal Engine 3? (And I doubt PS is made on Unreal Engine 3.5, since Wiki has nothing on it) Ubisoft is a major french company that has net worth of 90 million dollars net worth, do you think they will use UDK to do their stuff and pay the little company fee? No, they will buy the UDK with source code, so what you said is completely ultimate bollocks.

Im sure even someone like yourself can start to realise that =/ , you put too much faith in that company , just like

I assume that Ubisoft doesn't always use the top of the line version of an engine because their other games already use the version they're using so everyone is accustomed to it.

Or because their games are in production before the newer versions are released, and they don't have the luxury that PS Devs have to go and rework things at random.

Or because perhaps it costs more for a license to use a newer version of an engine for big named companies?

Question answered...

then why are you talking about the Engine, that Ubi will, or will not use for SC6? Isn't it offtopic?

Oh... if I just had a "key" for the thread door  ::)

Pshhhhhhhh. Everyone likes to talk about SvM and Ubisoft. Jordan mentioned SC6 in the first post in this thread, and the discussion has then veered more towards it as his first question was answer Looooooong ago.

Dread and Agent aren't doing as bad as they have been in other threads. Hell, they actually had a legit discussion in this one that didn't end in:
"You suck at CT!"
"No, YOU suck at CT you hacker!"
"I don't hack, I'm just good"
"Good at hacking maybe"
"Don't be mad because I beat you cause you suck even though you've played the game since forever"
"Children shouldn't be allowed to play PS. Nobody hacks once they hit the mature epiphany age of 18"

I think they want to cut costs and go with the older engine they already own. Also, a new engine would probably need a lot of tweaking to get it to work for consoles. Look at Assassin's Creed for example, they all use the same engine and that's been going for some time. What ever Revelations may bring it's just a bucket load of glossiness covering up the signs of ageing of the engine. A new engine in this case would slow progress. Meaning they can't pump out sequel after sequel every 1,5 to 2 years thus reducing profit.

To top it off, I believe Ubisoft is one of the most stubborn companies out there I came across. They do what they want even though the general public (fans) disagree.

Double Agent for PC was actually a mix of all previous engines (Ubisoft upgraded the engine slightly with each SC) + some Unreal Engine 3 elements (shaders, for most of it).

Conviction on the other hand, is basically CT's engine (the devs didn't even know about what the hell Ubisoft did with the DA engine) meets Unreal 3.

Though, it must be stated that CT's engine at his time was far more superior than Unreal Engine 3. Only recently Unreal Engine 3 is coming close to the features CT already pumped out based on the Unreal Engine 2, for example: Lit particles, Lightmass - CT calls it Global Illumination - and Kismet - Ubisoft developed his own version called Pattern.

Cleaned up this thread a tiny bit.

Mainly just the part where Dread and Agent went on about eachother. Also the part about Cat Ears/Furries. ...No need for that here.

My vid card got fried and now I'm using an onboard vid card.

If scct mp uses sc1 engine, how come sc1 crashes when I use thermal goggles, but scct mp doesn't?

Because the engine got tailored for use with MP, it's not like they could just take the SC1 engine and leave it as-is.

BLASPHEMERS!

I think we're gonna have to do an honor killing and stone you to death for such heresy.

I wasn't a big fan of the cover system.  It got annoying looking where I wanted to go all the time.  Instead of just doing a swat turn I had to look at the place I was turning to and then do it.  And the lack of a jump button just made climbing shit 10x harder.  I felt I had no control over Fisher.  Like he himself was questioning my commands.  wtf

What were you playing with? An Attari controller? Though I disagree with Conviction being the best out of all Splinter Cells, maybe if it had more options and longer levels then yes, otherwise no waaay!

Conviction had EXCELLENT Single Player mechanics.  I still feel that if someone were to crack that game and remove mark and execute you could make a pretty awesome spy vs merc game mode in there somewhere, but alas.  Far from the best game in the series (multiplayer wise).

Yes, but the premise is still too much action-based. In hindsight, some parts of hobo Sam could be merged with some of the SCC ideas. Add a sprinkle of old school SCCT and it'd be a nice game.

In hindsight, yeah, that sounds like an okay game. It's just too bad their decisions on the direction for the game were never close to that. It was either:

-modern day assassins creed (hobo sam)

or

- 24-esque plotline action Sam (conviction)

A throwback to classic splinter cell design seemed to never be a thought past, "you still have to be sorta sneaky". Anyone remember how throwing chairs and flipping tables was a big point in hobo sam's version of Conviction? :P

...or "hero vision"...

I even remember watching the tech demo and waiting for the beta to come 2 weeks later before it got canned.  I do like how Conviction ended up, but I dont like the complete lack of Spy vs Merc due to the time crunch they were on to release a SC game.

The problem is what I see, is that there are barely any players who would play Spy vs Mercenary, and I will make a best guess, I doubt it ever had more than 500-1000 people, and Ubisoft might have point about the fact that, 100 fans, is not enough for them to give a shit to make a perfect Spy vs Merc. They need something that will sell, though I hope Project Stealth will prove me wrong.

Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: Cronky on October 03, 2011, 10:29:32 PM
It seems like there is only a slim chance at this point that SvM would come back at this time anyway. Ubisoft seems to be taking less risks on their products as of recently, and with SvM being of little popularity means that they would have to wait for their next big sell before they "tried" something again (even if it's just polishing an old part).

As Knooger said, promotion was sparse for SvM, which is a problem, but not the only thing wrong with it's lack of reception. We all know that even if you had 10 people telling you only good things about SvM doesn't mean that the learning curve was any less steep. You had to be willing to playing a game you KNEW you were going to lose for quite a while. More so than in any other current game as of now at least. (I may not win every round of TF2, but I can at least kill people or attempt to help my team at the fine price of free. It would be a hard sell now a days to get me to buy SvM had I not been a fan beforehand.)

^^^
That line in the parenthesis is pretty much the reason why PS seems to be a good sell to people who are interested in this kinda of game. It'll be free, and it'll be better than CT (at least eventually).

I feel its basic multiplayer, thats how games get their replay value is multiplayer. SvM was just that.  It was there in the beginning theres no reason to take out it later due to "lack of popularity/steep learning curve."  Multiplayer has reached the point in gaming where it SHOULDNT need advertisement, its expected to be there.  Conviction's lack thereof of overall popularity was mostly due to there not being SvM.

The only other game I can think of that has removed multiplayer after having before is Bioshock 3 (we will see how well this game sells without it), but you can argue that the first game didnt have multiplayer, so its ok for them to remove it from the third title.

All that being said and my disappointment from Conviction aside, I REALLY hope PS bring back solid SvM gameplay to the forefront of gaming.  No one else is doing it right now.

AFAIK, SvM will probably not make it into S6. Then again, I follow it a LOT less.

I agree with you here, Ubi have pretty much abandoned SvM as it is too complicated for their current demographic audience of casual gamers...

They tried to dumb it down with SCDA so that it could appeal to the casual gamer - but in doing so it ruined the very concept of SvM, and it was not enjoyable at all - I guess thats when they gave up on it.

If the next SC game has any sort of MP, my bet is that it will be some sort of third person Gears/CoD esque squad shooter - that would appeal more to the masses of sheep out there.

DA SvM was tolerable in small doses, just too many bugs/glitches/exploits for the majority to enjoy it...well that and Spies got gimped/Mercs got buffed debate.  The XBL version still has a die-hard community that plays just about every night (even if its less than a dozen people online any given night).  I myself, still play DA SvM.

After Conviction, they promised to to re-introduce SvM.  So Im holding out hope they deliver on that.  The biggest issue with Conviction, was the time limit they had after their Hobo Splinter Cell game failed (about 1 year to make a brand new game from scratch) and SvM had to be cut just to save time and release a game by a certain date. (although they wont come out and actually admit that)  Not to mention that the specific Ubi team that was tasked with working on Conviction had no one among them capable or versed in how to create multiplayer aspects of Splinter Cell.  (which they actually admitted)

This could be achieved by:

2. Finally uploading that gameplay video to indieDB!
etc...

1. Updating the main site! last update was in january.... OF 2012!
2. Finally uploading that gameplay video to indieDB!
etc...
This game has been "in development" for 7 years now. The hundred or so people who would have had interest based on SCCT have moved on.

After 7 years the best you have is a 30 second clip of a spy running around a map. This game will never be released. And in the off-chance it is, it will be buggier and less polished than SCPT could ever dream of being.

but people on steam greenlight are interested and bring new possible fans.

also number of views of the gameplay video that was added YESTERDAY on indieDB was 333!

Spekkio, we more than quadrupled our record on indiedb's visitors yesterday. That's our all-time record.
I'm not giving away stats on Steam Greenlight yet, but we're in the top-10 there too (in the Concepts category, but still...)

Got wasted at a b-day party. And now I'm watching a movie. I'll see about putting a new challenge online in a few hours.

(disclaimer: my internet has been acting up today, so I might not get a connection)

So with SC:B being released in a few days... how do you plan to release PS without being regarded as a "cheap copy"?
Title: Re: Estimated date?
Post by: frvge on August 16, 2013, 04:32:52 PM
Simple: we're not a copy. Blacklist is for CoD players. We're aiming for hardcore stealth players. Different audience, different focus areas in the game. We've identified some interesting new gameplay mechanics that Blacklist doesn't have. And vice versa.

You won't see insta-killing Spies from the front in PS. I guess that's already a major difference ;-).

That is true, but that is not the problem. The real problem is PREJUDICE! I think a lot of people may see it and immidietly dismiss it as a "copy" without even taking a look! If you want people to get interested then you must at least somehow use a way of advertising with that the people can immidietly see "this is the one and only real asymetric stealth multiplayer game".

We also didn't see everything about SC:B yet, e.g. which features belong to 4v4 and which belong to 2v2.

I would agree with Maister_Neo here because just look at MineCraft. There's all kinds of games in the Xbox Live Indie game marketplace that has gameplay similar to MineCraft's though the actual game itself has a variety of different features to them. Though people still call those games a rip-off of MineCraft.

So the only question is that, will this same situation apply to Project Stealth? Because the entire game is very similar to Chaos Theory's and Pandora Tomorrow's multiplayer. Yet it has a variety of different features. But due to people not taking their time to actually play something that should be worth playing instead of some piece of shit game that came from classic to mainstream, and with their very low intellect. They'll still excuse it as a "rip-off".

Now this does makes me angry like everyone else because apparently no one understands the fact that the game is in the same genre.  :P

If you think Blacklist's SvM is for "COD players", you haven't looked into it deeply enough. There's a lot of depth to the game, especially with classic mode, and you aren't fooling anyone with your insults and divergence towards the development team. I was really looking forward to this game, back in the days of Double Agent. But since then, a lot of things have happened. Next gen is just around the corner, and Blacklist is finally bringing back the gameplay old school players wanted all along. There was a time when I came to the Project Stealth forums to see all the new progress, but that passed a long time ago. I don't mean to put you down, but you need to move on.

At this point, the game has been in the making for almost a decade. Most of the people who were anticipating this have moved on, and despite how much time has passed, there's still no "game" to show for it. I know how tough it is, but nobody will think any less of you for ending production on the game. In fact, I think they would be relieved. It can't be healthy to focus on a project for so long without any major progress. You need to join a team that respects your time and vision. Don't spend years of your life on something with such a small audience. I'd be singing a different tune back in the day, but I don't think it's good for you to still be pushing this game after seven years without major progress.

Those are the thoughts of someone who's been with you since the beginning. Every time I see you making promises of new progress, I genuinely worry about you. It's not fair for anyone to expect you to push this out after being stuck in this state for so long. I can only speak for myself, because I don't know you, but I think you'd get a lot of fulfilment from moving onto something with an active team, something that really challenges and motivates you. Good luck frvge :)

Did you get to play the Blacklist Beta or some pre-release version? If not, we must have watched different gameplay videos... I do agree that it is a step forward again after convinction, but still too much action to appease the CoD masses (which I have to say, would be "understandable" if it wasn't the "classic mode"). Maps are way too small and the game looks too fast paced.

Spies being able to taze mercs and then kill them in taze? This means a skilled spy can simply do a frontal attack if he isn't too far away... how did it come this far?

Also i said in the offtopic forum already, in blacklist terms we could say that the Mercs represent "Assault" and the Spies represent "Panther". But because of the size of the map and the pace of the game, it is almost impossible to be a "Ghost". At least that is my POV.

The things you mention all sound wrong in the context of Chaos Theory. Not so much when death is merely a small setback in Blacklist (for mercs). All they have to do is run back to the hacking stations and find the hacking spy, they have infinite lives. Also, the tazer has limited ammo. It's actually focused on objective gameplay instead of kills/deaths; it's about as far removed from the most popular COD mode as possible. However, from my experience with the game, it's perfectly possible to be a ghost as long as you make good use of distractions.

It lacks some of the tension of PT/CT, which is really down to the pacing (waiting around for minutes at a time really isn't an option), but saying it's there to appeal to COD players is totally dismissive. Try to think about the elements of the game in the context of Splinter Blacklist, instead of imagining individual facets retrofitted back into Chaos Theory.

EDIT: About tazed knife kills, it's not as easy as you think. Merc's can melee counter spies while stunned, and kill them regardless.

My main problem is that it is too focused on combat. I do think that it probably would be an enjoyable game, but it is not worth 60€ for me. Maybe later on when it is worth the price for me. At least I consider to buy it at all.
I only played the convinction campaign at a friend's comp to know how the story continues, but I certainly did not buy it.

Just to add my 2 cents, I don't even buy games that don't have multiplayer.

Conviction while it had a good story and above average Co-Op a full 60 bucks for a game with no true multiplayer is no go for me.  You can't expect people to pay full price for half a disc of content (coughBRINKcough).  That's one of the issues Fighting Games has right now...besides DLC add-ons.

Now that I have about 8 hours of Blacklist's multiplayer under my belt... I'm checking in here for a final time. After over 7 years, I think it's finally time to move on. Blacklist doesn't hit all the high notes, but it comes close enough for me and my friends.

I hope one day I get proven wrong, and I'll end up eating my words when this gets released on Steam and gets thousands of players. But for now, 7 years of waiting has proven too long. Especially considering Blacklist gets it 80% right, and is available to play right this moment... I guess the times have changed. I'm really starting to wonder if the remaining 20% is just nostalgia.

All the best. And make the best damn game you can.

It's funny that people seem to be moving on, just as we've created a company for the reasons of speeding things up... big things are happening at a pretty fast rate. I've been investing more the past few months than in the last 7 years combined. You'll see the fruits of that soon (hopefully a matter of weeks). Aw well, if SCB turns out to be good, I think that's positive for the SAM genre. It won't keep us from making an even better experience.

I look forwarding to seeing some footage, it looks like we might see some soon hopefully. After 5-6 hours of blacklist Im ready to just delete the game, Ubisoft clearly doesn't care about bringing back the old spy vs merc, they just want to appease to the CoD idiots and rake in as much money as possible.

If Minecraft went dead and they released a junk version after, those "rip-off's" would seem alot more viable then...

And Blacklist SvM is for CoD players... Just talk to vets and read the Ubisoft Forums.

Vanilla i see you on ubi and you have complaints now... i wonder if you're still here, i've been around since the beginning, even worked with Bob the Vila on some projects in CT, and had my own little mapping indiscretions (DimmyKron's Estate) LOL..

Blacklist SvM will push away core fans soon enough, and you'll be stuck with tazer spamming, Full-Aggro Spies and generally, exactly as frvge put it, a CoD clone, just with ninja's on one side.

Classic mode still exists, imo.  If Blacklist does not do well, everyone will just play Classic Mode instead.  A lot less BS there.
