Personally, I don't think our merc will be wearing a space helmet or space boots.
Our merc is well underway, any changes will mostlikely be minimal.

The way the merc should look is in my sig.  Not too similar to CT, but way better.

Are you guys currently making a merc map or model?

yes, merc is in progress, but i am not obliged to make it the way you want it.

I am not directly demanding it to look the way in my sig, it is just my opinion.  And I am happy to hear you guys are making a lot of progress!

All of the models that Kebab has drawn look like they should be in the game.  Even the one that Tidenburg edited looks good enough to me.  As long as it looks as high quality as the spy models, if not then they will look weird.  How are they coming by the way kebab?

Spies infiltrate a military base at the bottom of the ocean, and mercs can control mechanic sharks to keep spies off.

just a got big ass computer today,  which i intend to do PS with.

Dual quadcore Xeons (i never saw 8 cpus in the task manager before :D)
16gb Ram
1.6 Tb hardisk
24" widescreen Einzo monitor  (highend)
to go with my Cintique 21" monitor  (that 3520x1200 desktop)
8800 gtx  (was tempted to go SLI...but maybe with the next card)

with that on my desk,  and with more time, I will be able to start working more seriously on the merc.

Notes on the merc,   i love all of the suggestions so far.....but I am to far into the process to make radical changes.

hah...thats not something i am going to boast about.

let me put it like this,  i saved at least $3000 by having a shop build it, instead of getting a package deal by Dell or Boxx who specialize in highend machines.

oh...and i am now in love with Eizo monitors....impressive quality.

Sweet geebus. I'm still at 516MB.

is it wrong I want to make out with kebab's computer?

they have not posted a release date yet,  but Mud 2 will have texture painting and will take advantage of x64.   People are posting rumours of voxels,  which allows you to model based on particle like system that uses volume instead of the standard polygonal system.  Voxels=modelling with volume where you can make unlimited extrusions without effecting mesh density.  The polygonal system works like a skin,  where vert placement is crucial because it effects mesh density, and edge flow,  and introduces issues when making extrusions, bevels, holes, etc etc.

The one reason  Z feels faster is for that very reason,  its a 32bit app that can use x64 advantages.  But generally speaking,  they both have pretty much the same poly limits so you  have to be clever about how you manage the memory.  Mud can handle a 6mill mesh with some slowdown,  but the file itself can have 40+ mill polygons although not all displayable.

Yeah, but when you work on high polygon models such as the spy and merc, you REALLY need the PC to run smooth, otherways making models becomes a nightmare.

There is actually, but there are mobos that don't have a limit - my mobo can handle up to 3 Gigs of ram, though i can pack 8 Gigs on it :/

What I mean is that there must be a point where you don't feel an upgrade of RAM.

there is a ram limit on 32bit OS and on 32bit applications.

XP x86 supports 4gb ram with tweaks,  but applications will never get more then 2gb of ram.

I am running Vista x64,  so there is no ram limitation for the OS or any of the 64 bit apps i run.

The important part is the multitasking...i can render an image that needs 2gb of ram and 4 cpus running 100%.   The other 4 cpus and ram is dedicated to working on files that require unlimited amounts of ram.  I more often then not have Photoshop,  Mudbox, Maya, and a video player open simultanously.  ....I dont want to be slowed down by my tools.

Mudbox and Zbrush  will suck up Ram like cooked spaghetti noodles

Mental Ray,  will max out ALL cpus to 100% with just a click of the button.

Scene as in http://scene.org/ ? I love those procedural things.  ;D Some demos beat SCCT's quality by far.

There's a typo up in there...its 700.000 not 70.000.

I have an athlon 64 3000+, 1gb of ram PC3200 and a GeForce 6600gt 128mb AGP.

@Blob, you know I got a scene with 5 million polyongs in zbrush3...of course it took me 20 seconds to open the brush tab and I had to close it, but that's a detail.
