I guess this is suppose to be a mic/non-mic equalizer because me (a non-mic) facing two mics usually gets me a loss.
So we all know teamwork is important and we should take measures to encourage teamwork, right? So why not, as a merc, press a button and what you see for the next 5 seconds gets shown to your partner in a "Picture In Picture" style on his screen? If that's too much for someone, we could limit it to pictures, not video. If that's too much, it could be limited to Camnet only.
This is like a non-mic replacement for "The spy is in _____!". But mics still have the advantage in that they could actually plan on what to do.
And yes, it should be easyish to program. Someone always brings up the programming point...
Maybe the spies can hack more than comm? Hmm...? ;D
-would be a cool thing to have for spy traps and spy bullets :D
-if Tazer has a wifi attachment, i could see it useful for this when hacking mercs
-having it for use with partner does would not threaten game balance
wouldn't this slow down the fps a lot? i don't know how zoning works and all that, but i'm guessing it would.
I think a BF2 or Counter-Strike esque style of common voice commands would be sufficient enough. It would actually be better than PIP because you don't have to actively look in the corner, and the voice won't interrupt something you might be looking at in the corner of your screen the way PIP could.
You could always make it an option to have it auto display or to recieve an incoming broadcast notification and key it manually via keystroke.
Yea, and overstatement could always go out and spend $20 on a headset so that he has a mic.

lmao
I don't think this is such a good idea. Instead of simplifying your idea complicating communication process.
I don't have mic myself and the only thing really I would like to have in PS is some kind of help button to let your teammate know that both spies are there and you need help, instead of typing both while being omgwtfbbq aggroed.
Panic button FTW 8)

Video will tell you
where you are, where the spy is and where he's heading. Besides, it's cool. Isn't that enough? We could also implement the exact same system as voice to disable it locally and server-wide.

a custom panic button awesome.

If you are able to program different sayings to different keys then that would be cool. The 1 key would be " Help ", 2 key would be " Give Refill ", 3 would be " Guard Terminal " etc...
But it would always be better if you have a mic...
What if spies could listen to mercs while using hear beat? How would that change gameplay?

the video showing where the spy is/what he is doing kind of sucks. i think hacking the comms via spy trap is just fine. No need for a random pop-up video to show where your other merc is. Use a mic. Do you see any helmets or suits that carry live action third person shots of another person constantly? No. You will see the person's face if they have a camera in front of them. Camnet should be left in the game I feel, but a third person random follower video....eh...not really the greatest of things imo. and yea, lag could suck on that one.
I think it'd be kinda nice for teamwork to be able to switch your screen to match your partners view. That'd be nice just as a quick thing. It'd be sorta like a camnet view whee you're seeing through your partner's eyes. I don't like making it 3rd person for the merc, it should just be that you see whatever your partner happens to be seeing at that time.
Be sorta nice for merc and spy.
I didn't actually say third person. I was thinking the exact view of your partner's screen pasted onto your screen (with visions too).
All the mics are saying they wouldn't need this and that's true for them. But you got to think about other's needs too. You could disable it if you don't like it like how you could disable mic locally.
And in most of the random servers I join, my partner doesn't have a mic either. I don't think calling them cheap would be a good solution there, here or anywhere.
Fact is, that a mic is cheap. Get one and come play with the big boys.
Don't dictate how I should play. Might as well tell me to join a clan and play in tournaments. (NEVER!)
And my point was, most of the random people I play with don't have mics and no one can tell them to get one.
Those random people probably wouldn't use any sort of communication anyway. I'm definitely against a PIP thing.
good players communicate and play with friends most of the time. playing with random n00bs without communication is just dumb.

LOL............ Placeable cameras for mercs :D
So when a spy pass by, it will flash and send a picture to both mercs! :P

k, we'll have a "good players" option in the server create screen to disable the video.
maybe i didn't read it. But why not just have hot keys that send out messages of distress.
"Located a spy"
"I'm being aggro'd"
"My neck is caught in his arms"
"Do you have back pack?"
Things like that. That would be fine. Hell, it could be my awesome voice. I wonder if you could make a global thing too, so you could taunt the spies?
Edit: Now i see almost everyone posted the same as me. Make a global taunt. That would be fun.
"KHANN!!" no wait. that's not a taunt... ah well. we should make that.
Well since everyone here has hate for anyone who doesn't play the game exactly the same as them, lets move on to transmitting video/snapshots in camnet. Good or bad?
thats not the reason. The idea is a faulty one. We are trying to pick the best for everyone.

Well if you never use the feature, that's not even a big deal. It might be helpful for some people who don't have the benefit of a partner who happens to always be online the same time you are. At some point, you may not have any friends online, that's just the way it goes. And the problem with random n00bs may not be that they have no mics, but it could be that they speak a different language. On PC I can remember playing with a lot of people from France or Germany or whatever that couldn't speak english. They were good players, but you just couldn't communicate easily with them. A feature like this could help make that easier.
While I agree that a mic is definitely superior, it's kinda nice to be able to just see what's going on with your partner, and I really don't think it'll break the game in any measure. The only question is if the feature is worth the time to code. And really since it's just displaying the same view as another player, it seems as though it'd be easy as pie to code.
-Use sticky cam/camnet animation
-Instead of viewing the camnet or sticky cam, you view your partner's view. You can't turn or anything, you see whatever your partner happens to be looking at.
It's easier to just have it be a live full screen thing rather than a small window, because it'd be easier to code that way.
a quick communication system in bf2/2142 style is sufficient. this screenie/vid stuff is a nice to have feature, but it should be implemented carefully.

Sufficient for some, apparently not for all. If it's easy to do and you can turn it off, why not put it in?
just stay with text. hones the fast-typing skillz :D

What do you forsee as balance problems with this setup?
I can see some balance problems, but they aren't that huge. If you could keep that screenie up all the time then you could see what the merc was seeing at all times, if you saw a spy on his screen then you would know where a spy is and where a spy isn't bla bla. You know, not a big deal. Imagine if someone was idle, he could just hide in a dark corner where a spy wouldn't detect him and he would pretty much be a camera for the other merc. :-\
papa skull talks completely bs as always...

it could distract the player, overlap something important, be spammed, etc.
tbh i don't care about it much, because i got a mic and some regular mates...
Umm...everything in that can be said about mics. Overlapping is a stupid reason, no one spends a single second without moving their mouse so whatever is covered will quickly be uncovered. However, mics can "overlap" lots of important sounds.
Listen, this is a bad idea on multiple fronts:
1. For the people who have mics, it clutters the screen
2. It changes the way the game is played by being able to be aware of both you and your partner's surroundings. Two mercs looking at a screen to find a spy is better than one.
3. Most importantly, it compensates for someone's laziness. Look, if someone chooses not to communicate, then that's their perogative. There ought not to be a mechanism that makes up for someone's shortcomings. You might as well stick auto-aim into the game while you're at it. If they add a couple of one-button voice commands like "cammed" "let's coop" and "both here," then that would be sufficient. If you want any more careful planning than that, either type it out or get a microphone. It's fucking $20, and if you can't afford that it's time to get a fucking job.
In response to Overstatement's OP: It's not the fact that your opponents have mics that is making you lose; it's the fact that they probably have worked on strategies and tactics together whereas you are playing with someone random.

I think you're missng what I'm saying. I don't want the Picture in picture crap.
I just want it to be like camnet. You press a button and you can see through your partner's eyes (losing your own view in the process and staying stationary). Meanwhile your spy or merc goes into camnet or sticky cam animation and you're stationary while you're viewing your partner.
So there are certainly drawbacks to doing it.
It doesn't clutter the screen that way, but it's another option for people who want to use it.

sounds like a nice feature to me, but it has to be implemented very very carefully (+ there is no real need for it). for example, one should only see exactly what the other one is seeing (maybe with some additional static noise) and there needs to be a (different) animation like using camnet.
