Appealing to newbies? I personally try to make a better tutorial, and descriptions of 'best-uses' for gadgets. Apart from that, I think we're still pretty hardcore. Don't confuse accessibility and usability with targetting newbs.
An idea being more self-explanatory completes the thought towards the objective of being more accessible, therefore more useful.

Offense and Defense sound ok in theory, but that doesn't leave the option open for Offensive Mercs and Defensive Spies. That's one of the reasons why we don't have a story: anything is possible and that is up to the mapper.
Currently, spies cannot win if they won't make an effort towards the objectives.
Currently, mercs will win only by not allowing this to happen.
These are the two main strategies that govern the nature of the game. Whatever the means by wich the goal is achieved, are called tactics, which can truly vary as much as the world allows them to. Whether these are agressive or passive will not alter the fact that they would both have contribute towards a certain goal, and the goals of the spies are opposite to that of the mercs, by nature.
Although if by this you mean that you actually acknowledge the possibility where mercs are the ones tasked with neutralizing objectives, I must say I'm utterly intrigued by the thought.
