Okay, so I just bought it and the game is legit.  Do ya like Metroid?  This game will knock your socks off, or if you don't wear socks (agent ;)), then it will melt your face off.  If you have an xbox and you enjoy action/adventure then you should definitely download this.

Succubus Dryad Of The Undying Comet

Metroids were awesome for the feeling of loneliness (is that a word?)  and the freedom that they gave to the player. This is just a side-scrolling shooter, with some "puzzle" features.
I even doubt you can sequence break in it.

Meh. I'm going to find my Famicom. Gotta clear Metroid again.

Zedblade

yes, I'm buying it as soon as I get home. Most likely.

You don't know much about the game then.  It's all about sequence breaking, to an extent.  I always come across plenty of obstacles I couldn't get past until later in the game.  Then, when I get the necessary gadget, I can go back and get the goodies I missed out on.  For example, I'm about halfway through the game and I just got the foam gun (like Metroid's gun) and I can go back ALL the way to the beginning of the map to find some kind of hidden treasure using the foam gun.  But I don't have to.

And it offers you freedom.  You can go anywhere so long as you have the necessary gear.  You do have to get that gear in a sequence, technically, but this games grants loads of freedom from what I've played so far.  I'm pretty sure you can beat the game with a lot of the big-name gear items too since there are challenges for beating the game unlocking only the flashlight, rockets, backpack, and grenades.  I haven't even revealed 60% of the whole map yet - and it's HUGE!

Well, I just finished Metroid on 23%.
Unless SC comes out on PC, it's a no for me.

Untill then, I'm going to speedrun through the Metroid Prime series.
//Damn it Papa, you got me hooked right there ;)

Spark Mandriller

I 15%'d Zero Mission once.

Ridley was pretty hard.

Zedblade

I completed 100% of every Metroid game ever released.

Oh yeah, I'm hardcore.

Me too. You're not.

Oh, and I just found out you can sequence break in the game.  I wonder if it'll ever come to PC.  It is produced by Epic and they've been all anal about making PC ports.  Hopefully ChAIR can persuade them.  There would be some great mods with this game.

Who's buying/bought Trials HD?  I personally played the other Trials games on computer way back and I was thrilled when I heard it was coming to xbox.  It's sweet.  2 amazing 2D games in 2 weeks, it's 2 much.  Love the comeback they are making.

Spark Mandriller

Wait what you just found that out? Weren't you saying that's what the game is all about earlier?

How low can you go?

Farley4Fan

I said sequence breaking to an extent.  I thought you could only skip portions of the game, but now I just found out you can skip at least half of it with a few tricks that are incredibly hard to find out.

And I've only beaten the game once, just to beat it.  I'll go through and get my 100% run, then maybe my less than 13% run, then maybe I'll try some speed runs if I want.  The game has incredible replay value.

my less than 13% run
So you're saying, the game allows you to skip over half of it, and you will exploit that to an almost 90% skip?
That sounds hard.

Farley4Fan

No I meant a less than 13% of the items collected run.  There's an actual sequence break that lets you skip most of the story parts.

The game is suprisingly very open.

Really? I disagree (I love the Metroid series on the whole, btw):

Metroid 1 was fairly non-linear. Metroid 2 was extremely linear, as you couldn't progress to the next area until you eradicated all the metroids in your current area.

Super Metroid is faily linear as well, although less so if you can master the wall jump, and only becomes extremely non-linear if you can master the dash-->ball glitch, which is extremely difficult to do.

Metroid Prime only offered freedom if you were able to master the strafe jump glitch; however, this glitch was actually removed in the GoTY version (I spent hours of frustration attempting to do it before I discovered this fact).

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption offers no freedom at all. The game progresses similar to Metroid 2 in that you can only go from A---> B ---> C.

All in all, the Metroid games only offer freedom to players who discover and perfect how to glitch. I wouldn't really call that offering players freedom by default. Freedom is what the last 2/3 of FF3, the 2nd half of Chrono Trigger and what the Mega Man series offers: you can complete your tasks in any order.

No, the % complete tracks how many items you collect. 13% meant that he beat the game with minimal equipment/missile packs/power bombs/energy tanks/etc.

That's not freedom; that's the game pre-defining your path through the game, even though it doesn't seem so because you have to backtrack after you obtain certain items.
