I-Net is going crazy

Hi guys... i got a huge problem...

Around every 5-10 minutes my internet has a ping of 9999999 for around 5 seconds... after  that all is back to normal... and even in games it seems the other players don't even realize, that i laaged...

Here are some facts that i concluded by using google to check similar cases:

-Everything i found about it with google were forums... no things like guides/FAQs/troubleshootings were found
-None of the finds in google ended with "solved"... all threads just "died" at some point
-Although i found 1 possible solution. There was 1 similar problem, that was solved by deactivating "NetBios" (accesed by TCP/IP advanced settings). It didn't work for me though...

-It seems only people with a "FRITZ!Box" (router) seem to have that problem
-When multiple computers are connected to the same router, it can happen, that 1 person has that problem, and another not (confirmed... my bro never had this problem)
-Firmwareupdates/drivers have nothing to do with it (so the "standard" answers are WRONG, since they never helped and i already tried all that)
-It started yesterday night (24. July 2011 around 23:00 GMT +1), when i turned my computer on normally. I didn't change any settings/BIOS/whatever at that time.

other facts:
-When i pinged my router with console ("ping -t 192.168.178.1) it said at the end:    Minimum: 1ms    Maximum: >2000ms    0% data lost          it usually shows 2-3ms     sometimes 20-25ms     and a few times it goes >100ms.
-i had the same problem with my old computer 2 years ago. Back then it was "temporaly" solved by using new WLan, but for some reason after some time my computer stopped to "see" that WLan stick (WTF?!) It was finally solved, when i got a new computer and a new WLan together. But now it started to hound me again :(

if i find new clues, i will post them. Since i am real noob, when it comes to things like internet/WLan connection, i really would like some help. The first step would be, if someone could at least determine, if its a problem between     computer-WLan; computer-Router; WLan-Router or Router-Outside-world. My guess is, it's WLan-Router or Computer-WLan. But it would be nice if someone could solve that problem for real... because you cannot imagine what a horror these 5 sec laag every 5 min are (escpacially in Shooters)!

EDIT: just realized, that i had more than 20 viruses on my computer -.- even though i use avira free...

Sounds like a pure router problem to me, not specific to your ISP. I would recommend resetting the router to factory-standards if you didn't change too much settings, it shouldn't be hard to set it up again.

NeoSuperior

well... tried "restore" option, to a specific date around 2 months ago... testing it now

Just take any router from a friend and check if the same happens on it. Ping from PC to Router is <1ms

You can check if your router is a problem by doing an internet speed test somewhere (speedguide or some
other site). Check the results and then plug your computer directly into your modem (bypassing the router) and do the same test again.
The results should be pretty much identical if your router is working properly.

Have you updated the firmware on it? Is this possible to do? I had a problem similar to what you describe with a brand new LinkSys router.
It would shit the bed every so often and go down to dial up speeds. Cycling the power solved the problem briefly but it always returned.
I updated the firmware and it hasn't happened since. Funny enough, the problem I was having wasn't listed in the release notes
for the firmware update.

Hope this helps.

Well it made me lol.

just realized, that i had more than 20 viruses on my computer -.- even though i use avira free... It was still running, but then i had a blue screen and had to restart my comp........

Anyways i will let it check my comp again and after that i will see if it helped.

@Bubba:
The thing is, that it went well for over 1 year... i doubt it's because of the router... it seems a virus is the most rational explanation for that :o

Try Comodo, Knooger recommended, so far it's my best friend.

I find it unlikely you have 20 viruses and Avira didn't ever warn you about them (or while running Luke Filewalker), Avira is the top free virus-scanner for a few years in a row. Are you sure not some bogus program is trying to rip you off in believing their tool is the only one to remove all those trojans and such? Don't be a shamed, it happens to a lot of people and the "fake" virus-scanners look very real and convincing.

I use Avira Antivirus + Comodo Firewall (Paranoid Mode). Haven't had a virus in at least 6 years.

NeoSuperior

wellllll..... i had zone alarm as a firewall until half a year ago, and it went flawlessly... till i patched zone alarm... then it created several glitches and i removed it.... and since then.... OMGF i just had windows firewall  :o and last scan with AVIRA was 30.12.2010... well ok... i think i understand it all now... but we'll see if removing them helps...

My avira looks almost the same as this:

Mine is the "free version" (avira antivir personal) but the look is almost identical. I think it is the original... since i downloaded it from their own site :o

Malwarebytes + Hijackthis - check log from hijackthis on www.hijackthis.de

Well, no one AV will work if you don't use your brain while downloading and installing things from web :P

I also run  Spybot every so often. It can find shit other programs miss.

Malwarebytes beats Spybot too it, IMO. Anyway, with 20 viruses and god knows how many malware/spyware/whatever, I always recommend reinstalling the PC no matter if all viruses can be removed, it's simply not safe. Oh, Windows Firewall is crap :D If you want a user-friendly firewall, take Zone Alaram (again), if you want live-protection on whatever gets executed (so not just up/down-stream on the internet), take COMODO, it has one of the best HIPS-protection. It's a bit bothersome at first, but after a few days of working with it, it pretty much has everything whitelisted/blacklisted by your hand and only new stuff ill popup once in a while (I do recommend, though, turnijng off the Sandbox feature, it sucks :D)

Just be more careful, and when Avira tells you a keygen is unsafe, believe it ;) I use a completely isolated virtual machine for "questionable" stuff.

yep i already came to the comclusion to resinstall my comp... already copied most important stuff to external HDD. well damn i already had a point, where i only had 10 Gig left on my internal HDD, and everytime i was opening the properties of something, Dr. watson started to speak:

(pic googled)

well comp reinstall has been long overdue i guess. I will do it in next hours, and i hope it solves the problem with my i-net... but sooner or later I'll need a new comp. (for example, when PS will be released :D)

Lennard called it right. With so much shit going on you should format and reinstal. It's not worth the hours and hours you'll spend trying
to clean it up and not completely suceeding.
