well i have no problem with a wider horizontal viewing angle as i have a 16:10 screen on my own, but if the 5:4 and 4:3 guys don't wanna have black bars they gonna have a disadvantage which isn't neglectable...

Or you can have no problem with having your view stretched to fit your monitor.

Bionic-Blob

maybe you can make some sort of compromise by using the HUD. so that with widescreen, the HUD is in vertical bar(s) at the sides, and with 4:3/5:4, it's in horizontal bars at the top of the bottom. arranged just right so we've all got the same viewing area

The hud is transparent... At least in all games.

Lets make it 16:10 and have it shrink horizontally to fit you 4:3 monitor?

Stretching is BS. It looks bad. A little bit of extra viewing room isn't gonna kill anyone.

Any good 16:9/ 16:10 monitor has the option to use 4:3.

They can still be transparent, but they will have black behind them.  It won't be black bars from your monitor it will be black bars from the devs.

Yes it is.

actually, 16:10 support won't be a problem at all. the guys with 5:4 or 4:3 can choose between keeping their natural aspect ratio, playing with bars so they have the same widescreen fov or streching the picture horizontally. widescreen is the future because it comes closer to the natural human fov, it makes no sense to stay with ancient formats.

I suppose you have got a 16:10 monitor?

Gawain

of course i do. once u played widescreen for a little while there is no going back, it's almost as huge a difference like between watching old fashioned tv or going to the movies ;)

A better gauge of what most people use when playing online games is the steam survey. While it's still not perfect, since they don't have a 5:4 option, they have the largest sample size. Only 25% of users are using a 16:10 aspect ratio. So 75% are using a 4:3 or 5:4 ratio, and honestly, the difference between the two in terms of viewing angle is pretty negligible.

Well i don't aggree on that one. I find it much easier to play in a 4:3 13" (ha;f a meter away from it) monitor instead of a 16:9 28" (2,5 meters away) TV.
Edit: also, what will you guys do about the 'change FoV option in UT? It's changeable from the ini's too.
