Title: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Farley4Fan on January 18, 2008, 06:53:00 AM
Sorry for like the 4th thread of mine on the first page or something like that, but whatever.  I'm getting a pretty nice PC for just under $1000 bucks.  It's a gateway.  I'll give you the specs later.  But, I will finally be able to play with you guys.  I'll finally be able to play PC CT again.

My Xbox is great for gaming and all, but I needed a more powerful PC not for gaming but for other stuff.  So I decided to get one that is good for gaming also.  I'm getting a brand new 19" monitor to go with it also which is also pretty nice.

I'm not really asking for recomendations or anything because I already have chosen.  This thing has more than enough power to play CT, believe me.  And I should be able to run PS without even updating it.

See you all when I get CT for PC!

it's threads/posts like this that give me the feeling that an off-topic forum besides sclamers would make sense...

Then the amount of off-topic posts like these would rise and we don't want that.

If I remember correctly, we did have an off topic section.  Just that no one used it and it got deleted.  And finally, you will ALL be able to kick my ass.  ;D

Yeah neth, frvge has an avatar that is just supposed to mess with people's minds.  It blinks randomly.

Gateway pcs are great value for money always. Ive got my sights set on another pc and a macbook pro (not tempted by air) soon so I suppose I'll have to make a thread 'bout that aswell :D

Quotebut I needed a more powerful PC not for gaming but for other stuff.
Agreed. Once my pc reached 20gb of porn I too noticed a bit of a performance lag. ;)

I want to know your specs when you get it. Then get x-fire and give me your name.

What's wrong with Gateway?  I've had no problems using gateways in the past whatsoever.  This one can run CT as good as you can get it to run, so I don't have to worry about that.  It's pretty good for gaming.  I'll get the specs soon.

My new name for xfire will probably be something like Dr J McTeabag, or something like that. Because I am making a new xbl account with a name like that.

And neth, I look forward to kicking your ass on 360 lol  When you get one.

If you aren't going to build your own, go with dell.

Out of all the mainstream pc manufacturers, dell packages their PCs with the least amount of bullshit
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Farley4Fan on January 19, 2008, 01:01:18 AM
I'm not going to build my own.  Mainly because it would take the time and money that I don't want to spend.  Dell is good.  I've had experience on both dells and gateways.  I'd say that they both have the same amount of bs, which isn't a lot.

btw a gateway is a PC lol  It's a brand.
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...

and for only 100% extra the cost ;)

cheap and functional > expensive and brand name.
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Bob_Bobber0 on January 19, 2008, 02:47:58 AM
Building your own PC would ensure quality and low cost, because you can determine every component in your build. I recently built my first computer and I could give ya a list of parts/a recommended build thats compatible. For $1000 you can easily build a quad core computer with an 8800GT at least.

PM if your interested it really isnt as hard as every one thinks.
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Farley4Fan on January 19, 2008, 03:03:06 AM
I know that.  I actually built my PC before.  I just don't want to take the time to do that.  I mean, the one I'm getting is such a great deal.  It's a monitor, the PC, and printer all in one bundle for like 800 dollars.  Now wait a minute, don't say that the PC sucks because it doesn't.  I was surprised at how cheap it was for all of that and such a good PC.  And I'll probably end up putting in my own hardware in it anyways.  I'll customize some parts of it but mainly I'll just leave it as the stock for now.  I keep forgetting to get the specs damnit  :D
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Bob_Bobber0 on January 19, 2008, 03:22:47 AM
Oh ok. The main problem with Dell is they give you nice hardware but mount it on like a shit motherboard and install all their adware shit. haha

i still say build your own, its worth the time and the less money.
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Xris on January 19, 2008, 06:42:15 AM
dell also has the worst support ever ... not that any of us need it  ;)
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Farley4Fan on January 19, 2008, 07:27:11 AM
Well, I'm buying the main ordeal.  Later on I'll add custom stuff and practically build my own.  But for now it's just going to be the stock PC, which is still a good PC to begin with.  I know what you mean, building is always the better option.  But as of now time is of the essence.   I need to get to playing on PC now if I ever have shot at competing with you on PS.

it took me under 8h to build my pc and install all the software, and i'm not experienced with this stuff. so your time argument fails.
in my exp, the dell business service is quite good, but you don't wanna pay for that XD

OH NOES! NO Dell or Packard Bell, they come with a homemade MasterCD maker (Recovery stuf) which ALWAYS fails you don't know how to hack it (CRC checks failing, unable to restart it, those programs are also one-time use, i've had millions of cases where I had to become the hacky guy to still get past those damn programs), do yourself a favor and get a Compaq or the Gateway you probably already ordered (ATM, I'm writing this on a Compaq Armada 1700 laptop with 266MhZ, a Pentium II, 128 RAM and Windows XP running smooth, it says something about Compaq doesn't it?).

its cheap and performs awesome. The bios is excellent. If you're planning on SLI'ing then dont get this one because it only has one pci-e slot, but otherwise its awesome.

Just got done playing the first 2 or 3 levels of Crysis.  It's a pretty good game.  My PC ran it pretty smoothly.  Of course it wasn't completely all it could have been but it ran it smoothly.  I think that should answer any questions about how good it is.

LAWL YOU BOUGHT A COMPUTER PREMADE AND FULL BS.  Got to make your own comp, you could have been running top of the top line comp with 1 grand.  instead of upper mid range.  oh well.

I'm going to upgrade it and put in a lot of my own hardware.  Runs vista faster than any comp I've seen.  Runs Crysis nicely.  Plus a nice laptop doesn't come with a printer or a 19" monitor.  It's a load of stuff for a grand.

Every time I see one of those commercials I get sooo pissed. The latest one was Apple showing off "time machine" just a fancy word for system restore that PC's have had for years. And they try and show it as a brand new never invented feature that only Apple has. Fucking ridiculous. Fuck Apple. I think I take it wayy to personal but damnit they are making fun of PC users and I am one of them!
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: seefoo. on January 23, 2008, 12:15:20 AM
its not a system restore.  well you can restore your system from it but it does exactly what its name says.  you go back in time pretty much to any point in time to grab files that have gotten corrupted or lost originals.  take the time machine and get them back easily.  its a handy tool that is a lifesaver and it freakin' is so cool - i love it.  osX > windows any.
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Xris on January 23, 2008, 12:41:51 AM
you can do that with windows too its called NT Backup, and its been around since Windows NT.  You can even put the file on a dif HD, tapes, CD-R/Ws, DVDs, or even a USB key

didnt know you can restore single files or single applications to original state in NT.  i also love timemachine for backing up my files automatically.  mabye NT has this feature too - i dont know cuz i dont work on a PC.  i only game on PC ^^.

imacs and macbooks are for noobs.  the air - good internet, mail, movie  and music player.  maybe next year they put in dvd playa.  also you forgot about the innovations besides the paper airplane modE!  new multifinger function mouse pad (just iphone or itouch).  what else can i say but iphones n ipods are cherry sync...always had problems on PC.
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Farley4Fan on January 23, 2008, 03:12:47 AM
You mean they sync easily?  Meh, whatever.  Zunes sync fast enough for me to my PC.  That's all I need.  I don't need something so thin I can fit it in my damn wallet lol

Seriously, Iphones are cool and all, but they are just blown out of the water by high end mp3 players like my 80gb zune.

BTW, what video/graphics card would you guys suggest?  My PC runs Crysis nicely on med-high, but I'd like to get a graphics card capable of running it on high-very high at all times.  What would you guys suggest that isn't so expensive?  Like under 200 bucks atleast?

A lot of people have had problems running CT on nVidiia 8000 series. You should probably know that.

Personally, on my laptop with a 8400M GS, I get about 2 FPS on SC, it I can run Crysis. A friend of mine with some 8000 card doesn't see the flashlight.

im telling you go with ATI not nvidia, back in the day i had a radeon 9800 PRO (it was brand new cost me 700$) and it kicked ass and still does for CT, now i have a laptop with a ATI X1600 M and it kicks even more ass, btw with vista and hyper memory it boosted the card up to 1GB video memory.

QFE, I'm still very happy with my x1600 PRO. Even though it won't run the latest games on superhigh (the old ones do though :D), it still looks surprisingly good and runs real fast. I dont have a PCI-Express version like you though, so I can't boost it :(

its true that the nvidia cards dont render the flashlight and some dynamic lights in CT, but for current games the 8800GT is fine, Yea I know people who run Crysis in Dx10 fine with great framerates. You could get the Radeon HD3870 or something like that, it has better specs than the 8800GT, but the 8800GT performs better in benchmarks.

nVidia has awesome game development tools that only work for their cards.

Wait, is there something wrong with Nvidia?  Or do their cards just not work with older games or something?  Maybe if I want to play with you guys on CT I shouldn't get a nVidia?  What else?  I'm thinking about the Radeon.

several 8000 series cards have a glitch that doesnt display the flashlight and some lighting properly in CT. Other than that its fine. Its just a driver issue but it will probably never be fixed.

nVidia is awesome. It's just some specific cards that has a problem with one specific game.

8800GTX 768MB
GPU @ 642MHZ (With room to spare)

100% Stable.

I'm perfectly happy with it. I've had ATI in the past but I decided to give Nvidia a shot again (my GeForce4600ti burned up, literally) and I'm glad I did. I'm even considering picking up another one to run SLI when the price drops a little. I'm not a latest and greatest kinda guy either, but I am certainly a graphics whore  ;)

Well, I know for sure that I am getting a card with atleast 512 mb.  Probably ebay or amazon, I've saved hundreds of dollars on things shopping there.  I'm just not sure whether or not I should go with the Radeon or the 8800gt from nVidia.  They are both equally good cards, but you guys are suggesting the nvidia more.  Why?  Especially if it screws with CT?

There is no off topic forum anymore, so whatever.

It has to do with Graphics cards because I want to upgrade my graphic capability on my PC.

I just haven't gotten around to getting xfire.  I've got other things to do right now.  What do you want to ask me?

I'm really starting to wonder about you.  Are you a fucking retard?  YOU, yeah thats' right you, don't have to click on my threads.  I DO NOT go to SCLamers for a couple reasons.  First of all I hear it's a shitty place with flaming from all kinds of people like YOU.  Second of all, they wouldn't answer my questions as well as some of the mature vets would (Not you btw).

Above all, you still feel the need to be a fuckin asshole to everyone.  I'm sick and tired of it.  The whole forum is sick of your fucking attitude.  Get a clue faggot.  There is a reason why a thread was made about banning you.  There is a reason 90% of the people who posted in that thread said you need to change.

I've already decided on getting a nVidia card.  More than likely it'll be the 8800 GT.  Does anyone have a preferred maker of the card?  Like PNY?  Or does it not really matter?

1.  Most of the forum DID say that he needed to change, but not everyone voted for his banning.  True.  They wanted him to change, and not be banned.  So, what?  He hasn't changed.  Not one bit.

2. Maybe a ban is in order now because he just can't seem to find a way -- to listen to other people --, which lead me to saying he -- has a preference for males --.  Sorry if I offended anyone by saying that.

3.  I may not speak for everyone, but I am sure that I can speak for the majority.  Gawain is a --buttocks on fire-- who can't change his ways.  How can you not be tired of it just because he hasn't offended you personally?  He's done it to plenty of others.

Wtf Gawain?  Can you not take a hint?  Seriously, get a clue, change your ways.

i don't have any intention to start a flame war with someone because it's simply not worth the effort.

did actually anyone besides me wonder wtf a thread like "wooohoooo i'm getting a pc, again, finally..." is doing in a mod forum?

papa, you're also wrong about sclamers. the only differene to the ps forums is that they tell a moron  quite frankly that he is one. if you don't act like a moron there, i'm sure there are plenty of nice and experienced people helping you out. you're really drawing kinda prejudized conclusions here. when ps comes into beta phase, you will probably get to meet all the pc vets anyways...

i really think there's a need for an off-topic forum to keep it all clean as the ps community is growing. another solution would be to make it more obvious that sclamers is the place for off-topic discussions, like placing the logo/link in the upper left with a small explanation or sumthin...

Part of the reason was that people were always hastling me about getting a PC, including you Gawain.  (Then I finally go get one and you go "What the hell do I care for?")  Another reason is because you guys, most of you guys, know what you are talking about when it comes to PC's.  You have good PC's and I'd like to get some advice from people that I KNOW have good experience with PC's.  Why should I go somewhere I've never been before, where I don't know if they have great PC knowledge, and ask them about PC's?
papa, you're also wrong about sclamers. the only differene to the ps forums is that they tell a moron  quite frankly that he is one. if you don't act like a moron there, i'm sure there are plenty of nice and experienced people helping you out. you're really drawing kinda prejudized conclusions here. when ps comes into beta phase, you will probably get to meet all the pc vets anyways...
It's hard not to with all the stuff I hear from you guys.  Like "if you want to spam and flame, go to SClamers".  That's basically all I hear from you guys.  So why should I go there exactly?? Why not ask an innocent question at a place I am familiar with?
i really think there's a need for an off-topic forum to keep it all clean as the ps community is growing. another solution would be to make it more obvious that sclamers is the place for off-topic discussions, like placing the logo/link in the upper left with a small explanation or sumthin...
I agree completely.  Maybe a little sign right by it that says "don't believe what you hear, it's not that bad of a site" would go nicely as well  ;D

And come on man.  If you don't care about the thread, just don't click on it.  Problem solved.  I say we bury the hatchet because our flaming isn't getting anyone anywhere.  And that just cannot happen if you attempt to lash at me from nowhere.

I didn't read the whole thread, but a few things:

1. You already bought the Gateway, so this might be moot, but...you will end up spending nearly 50%-100% more for a pre-built computer than you would for one that you built yourself. This is money that you could have been spending on more power (ie the graphics card). The tradeoff is it takes you a few hours to put together the machine -- big deal. It's not that difficult, and can be quite fun. It also has the bonus of having everything that you KNOW is in the computer with no superfluous bullshit shareware programs taking up space. This helps a lot when troubleshooting issues.

2. There is no way that a pre-built computer costing $1,000 including a monitor and printer is "good" for a gaming PC. At best, you have 2-3 year old hardware in it, and at worst you have a juiced out processor with a ton of proprietary parts, onboard video, and no PCI-e slots.

3. Upgrades on pre-built computers can be difficult depending on how companies configure their systems.

3a. If you're looking to upgrade your video card, assuming that your motherboard actually has a PCI-e slot on it (most pre-built computers that come with onboard video don't, so you screwed the pooch if this is the case because you'll probably need a new computer because a lot of pre-built cases don't fit the ATX motherboard form), the 8800GT is by far the best price/performance card on the market. It's a little higher than the $200 you're looking to spend, but it's worth it.

4. You can find out what video card/controller you have by right clicking on the desktop, then clicking on properties, then going to the settings tab. The video card (or chip) will be displayed above the resolution slider.

5. Xfire literally takes 2 minutes to download, install, and start, assuming you have a broadband connection. It's a < 5 MB program.

I don't mean to make you feel bad about your purchase, but you really ought to do more research when buying stuff. A post in the "computer and hardware" section of SCLamers would've helped you out a ton, even if it would've just been to compare various pre-built machines. The fact that you don't even know what kind of video card the computer has when you intend to use it for gaming (but it runs crysis gud lol!) speaks volumes about lack of foresight and investigation into what you're buying.

Oh absolutely man.  Usually I would make my own computer.  Without a doubt.  But I needed one quick.  For school and work.  This seemed like the best option considering it has a good gaming capability as well as the regular features.
2. There is no way that a pre-built computer costing $1,000 including a monitor and printer is "good" for a gaming PC. At best, you have 2-3 year old hardware in it, and at worst you have a juiced out processor with a ton of proprietary parts, onboard video, and no PCI-e slots.
Best Buy was having a great sale at the time.  At a regular sale price it would go for about 1500 dollars at the minimum.
3. Upgrades on pre-built computers can be difficult depending on how companies configure their systems.
Gateway comes with about 2x less bs than computers like ones from Dell come with.
It won't be a problem upgrading it.  8800 GT is the winner lol, most people have suggested that.  Thanks guys for the recommendations.
4. You can find out what video card/controller you have by right clicking on the desktop, then clicking on properties, then going to the settings tab. The video card (or chip) will be displayed above the resolution slider.
Yup, my PC is at another house.  The graphics card is mediocre.  One of the few things that needs to be replaced to play Crysis smoothly on all high settings.
5. Xfire literally takes 2 minutes to download, install, and start, assuming you have a broadband connection. It's a < 5 MB program.
Downloading now  :D  Funny you asked me that.

Well, my computer is at another house.  I would give you the specs if I actually had the computer with me.  This computer is great for a prebuilt comp+monitor+printer.  Believe me, it surprised me too.  It's also pretty easy to upgrade.  I'm getting the 8800 GT soon.  THEN, I'll end up replacing the stock parts down the road, although most of them don't really need a big upgrade atm.

Just a little caveat, papa: the 8800GT isn't going to run SvM correctly because it can't process the echelon lighting, and the chances that Ubi patches the game to make it compatible is <1%.

The newer ATI cards also have this problem.
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Farley4Fan on January 30, 2008, 08:08:25 PM
A card that powerful can't process echelon lighting?  Kind of dumb, guessing it's just an error but that sucks.  Does it run most of it correctly?
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Bob_Bobber0 on January 30, 2008, 11:27:59 PM
Its not that the card "can't" run it, its a driver issue, and since the game is decently old and there is not a huge base of players it will probably never be fixed.
Title: Re: Woohoo! I'm gettin a PC, again, finally...
Post by: Farley4Fan on January 31, 2008, 03:26:49 AM
That's what I thought.  Don't forget that it is Ubi we are talking about.  Even if the game had millions of players and it was new it probably wouldn't be fixed anyways.

I think that you wrote this implying that you could leave both cards in the computer without swapping them.

This is false.

The two PCI-e slots are for SLI/crossfire setups. You cannot leave two different video cards in there unless you disable one of the PCI-e slots through the BIOS (if that's even possible).

Hey guys.  I got my 8800 GT today.  The thing is a beast.  I just played Crysis for about an hour or two on all high settings.  Very smoothly.  I had to get a new power supply just for the card, obviously, but they were both pretty easy to install.  Everything else in it is stock right now.  And the fact that it can run Crysis so good with mostly stock parts amazes me.  And thanks for recommending the 8800GT to me, works perfectly.

I haven't gotten to try it out on CT yet.  One thing I have to get used to on PC is that you can't go a multitude of speeds based on how much you are holding the forwarrd button down.  I can't tell you how many times I was killed by mines because I didn't know if I was in slow or fast mode.   :D  And that was just in one hour of play.  I'll have to get used to that.

Post the specs, take a pic of your crisis options, and then tell me the framerate. I have a hard time believing you can run at all high for $1500, when top of the line computers still struggle a bit.

Haha, well man I'm telling ya.  It works on all high settings.  Not VERY high though, I know very few computers who can handle that very smoothly.  But on all high settings I get around 30-40 fps with minimal pauses/glitches.  I'm sure it could maybe handle very high settings at 15-20 fps, but I'd take smoothness over pretty scenery.  But even on high settings Crysis looks stunning.  And it's not really lower line comp, it's got an almost top of line graphics card in it with pretty good stock parts to go with it.  I'll post specs of my computer later, and and pics of my options.  But for now, take my word for it.

Freaking awesome game btw, one of the best FPS I have played.  If not, it's the best.

There are only two speeds on the PC version of CT, and there is a speed indicator at the bottom right of your screen. If it's there, you are in "slow mode," and if it's not, you are in "fast mode." You can have the speed controlled by the mousewheel ala PT, or you can have it bound to a separate button.

*Crosses fingers for multiple speeds in PS*

The one thing you'll have to get used to in CT with the 8800GT is the lack of flashlight and eschelon lights (ie the lights coming from the windows in Warehouse).

It's a spit decision between COD4 and Crysis for me.  They are both great shooters, not sure which is better.  I've played COD4 for longer than Crysis, and the MP is better than Crysis's multi.  The SP goes to Crysis imo.

As for multiple speeds, that's one of the main things I love about console.  The sensitivity of the analog sticks and what you can do with them.  I've used a controller on CT for PC for a while but it just wasn't the same.  It was a real change to have to press a button to go slower.   :(

Yea, but in CT there really is no point to having variable speeds.

PS could have traps that react to different speeds.
Speeds could be defined by color - green (slow) throught yellow, red, purple to blue (max speed).

My desire for variable speeds has nothing to do with traps, since that'd be exceptionally annoying. It has to do with various surface types in the map and various ambient noise levels.

I'm able to run Crysis at VERY HIGH settings at an average of 25 fps.  Pretty smooth actually.  Some minor slip ups but yeah, it can handle it.

Operating System: Windows Vistaâ„¢ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6000) (6000.vista_gdr.071023-1545)
System Manufacturer: Gateway
System Model: GM5626
BIOS: Default System BIOS

Memory: 3070MB RAM
Page File: 1045MB used, 5278MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 10

And the display stuff:

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce 8800 GT
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0611&SUBSYS_053C196E&REV_A2
Display Memory: 1756 MB
Dedicated Memory: 477 MB
Shared Memory: 1278 MB

I like how almost a whole gig of ram is gone because of dedicated video memory and the like. That is one thing I hate about 32 bit; wasted ram.

Your processor is only at 2 gigs? My quadcore is at 2.8 gigs.

I have an 8800 gts 640 meg, 6600 quad at 2.8 each, and 2 gigs of ram, and run high settings with some adjustments at about 30-35 frames. I don't see how your inferior system can run it higher than mine at more fps. My resolution is 1680 by 1050, but yours is pretty close.

I'm about to cram all this into a Antec P182 case -

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz
RAM: CORSAIR Dominator 4GB DDR2 1066 Quad Kit
GPU: EVGA 8800GTX X2 Running SLI
Audio: X-Fi Xtremegamer Fatal1ty
PSU: SILVERSTONE ST75F 750W
Mobo: ASUS Striker II Formula nForce 780i SLI

Anyone else using this case and running 2 EVGA 8800GTX cards? They are freaking huge and it looks like they might fit but I'm not 100% sure. Might as well grab a Lian Li or something larger if it won't fit... Airflow might turn out to be an issue as well... not sure yet.

I've posted on several overclocking forums about this with no replies so I figured I'd try you boys since this thread was already going  ;)

My processor is still just the stock.  I will upgrade that in the future, then get an overclocked card, and then look into some more minor upgrades.  And I guess my system isn't inferior to yours lol, jk of course.  I guess my setup just has an easier time running Crysis, I don't know why exactly.  If you want some proof I could post some pics or vids of it running smoothly on Very High or just High settings.

I agree with Spekkio. The fatality series are overpriced. I'm getting a Gamer or Music myself. Good enough.

Why are you overpaying for a sound card?

Because I like the features and I worked for the money so it's what I purchased. Don't ask me questions that I have no reason to answer just so you can reply telling me there's something similar for less or some other bullshit.

Don't be a troll.
Wash the sand out of your vagina. You asked for opinions on your sytem, and I gave you one. You bought an overpriced sound card, which is useless in the overall scheme of system performance and doesn't provide any better sound than a $50 sound card. You could've used that money you saved on the sound card to get a better processor; don't take it out on me because you did something stupid.

Likewise, buying 2x 8800GTX at this point probably wasn't the best idea, either. The 8800 series is starting to age, and you just spent upwards of $900 on something that is going to be replaced in a couple months by something that performs better for 1/2 the price. Also, enjoy your whopping 7% overall performance increase over 2x 8800GT, which would've run you ~$600 instead. Oh, and on some games running maxed out, like oblivion, the cheaper 8800GT wins:

Source 2: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=1057&model2=706&chart=298

Although you also do rendering, so the extra RAM on the 8800GTX comes in handy. But again, waiting until now to spend all that money when the next-gen cards are on the horizon is pretty stupid.

Why is it that so many dumbasses ask for advice after they make a purchase, and then get angry when they don't like the answer?

Thumbs up to your purchase, though. No, really.

if you want a a good sound card for games, get the x-fi xtreme gamer or music. if you want an excellent sound card for both games and audio, get an auzentech prelude (also x-fi chip).

sli with two high-end cards is also pretty stupid unless you wanna run games at insanely high resolutions...

I've already played Crysis on an 39" HD TV.   ;D  Not bad.  A little grainy and stretched, it was okay though.  I'd still prefer it on my 1440x900 LCD monitor, however.

you guys he may be running crysis in DX9,

I agree it is pointless to SLI the 8800's unless you got them for extremely cheap. Just save some money and get a next gen. and only have 1.

I dont know too much about sound cards to offer an opinion. My mobo came with onboard HD audio.

I asked one question about fit and airflow only including the other hardware because it will affect airflow and even 1 8800GTX warms up the inside of a case quite a bit. I didn't ask your opinion on anything else. You know jack about the sound card because it DOES increase overall performance by taking the load off your CPU and RAM.

I already own 1 8800GTX so it is only a $400 dollar investment to go SLI.

I haven't made the purchases yet but thanks for your concern.

Quote from: Spekkio on February 14, 2008, 04:39:55 PMThumbs up to your purchase, though. No, really.

Fuck you, no, really, fuck you.  ;)

In summary
1. I haven't purchased all the parts yet so I'm not getting all emo on your ass.
2. The X-Fi was $79.00 because I picked up an open box.
3. The X-Fi has 64MB of ram on it which the $50.00 cards do not.
4. The X-Fi takes a load off your system producing a FPS boost over a $50.00 card.

If I decide to go SLI it will depend on several factors -
1. Do I have to replace my case to fit the cards and maintain good airflow?
2. What is coming out and when? (No real word on this yet that I can dig up)
3. How much of a performance boost per dollar are the new cards going to be over 2 8800GTX.

If the performance boost is somewhere close to a newer single card then it is the better choice to spend $400.00 rather than $700-$800 like I did when I got the 8800GTX I already have.

Onboard audio uses your CPU and RAM reducing performance. Some sound cards offload part of the processing into your system as well. The X-Fi Fatility does not. Not every game takes full advantage of the card but the ones that do see a decent FPS boost because your system memory and cpu are not handling the sound.

It's by a very small margin vs. other sound cards, and generally not worth the retail price. By the way, you could've just said "because I got a deal for it" two posts ago instead of giving me a snotty answer. The sound card you're getting for $80 is normally over 2x that much, and developers aren't exactly clamoring to optimize games for onboard audio RAM when there is only one card that has it and it was released at over $250 retail because it has some videot's screen name on it.

Still a silly thing to do at this point in time. If you were going to do this a few months ago, then that's a different story.

You can expect the cost per dollar for the new cards to exceed the cost per dollar for SLI, as that has been the trend since SLI was released.

the Nvidia 9xxx cards come out sometime this year i believe. All I've heard is that SLI, for the money, is not worth it.

Bobbero I'm running it on DX10  ;)

It runs smoothly on Very High on both DX9 and DX10.

It's usually not. There are some people who insist on gaming on high resolution wide screen displays (which I personally think is silly), and for them an SLI system is necessary to get playable framerates. However, at best you will see a ~50% increase in performance with maxed out graphics settings.

Others, like Mr.Mic and Goodkebab, work in the rendering business so they need the extra power and GPU memory.

For the average gamer with your typical 1280x1024 LCD or 1024x768 CRT, an SLI system is a waste of money.

I believe rendering is mostly done with CPU and RAM. Unless it uses the specialized graphics cards, like Quadro FX.

Actually, If I remember correctly the GPU will only influence on the viewport in Maya/Max/whatever package you wanna use. Rendering is pretty much on the CPU but I guess that fits under extra power.

This is true. Workstation cards are pretty much only good for hardware rendering. Their specs blow for gaming too.

One of the biggest reasons for me looking at SLI is to increase viewport performance when working with high poly models for normal map generation. I just haven't been able to confirm that 3dsmax, mudbox or zbrush will see a benefit from SLI. The extra memory alone is pretty much worth it to me. If any of my 3d apps are unable to make use of the second card then I would be better off waiting for a 1gb or greater card to come out.
